Peggy (pebbles84) | 15867 comments The end of the year is near and I thought it would be interesting to hear more about the books you all read in 2014. I can add more questions to the list if you're curious about something else :)

I think ŷ can provide you with all the stats and numbers, at least if you filled out the challenge thingy.

1. How many books did you read this year?
2. How many pages did you read in total?
3. What's the average amount of pages per book?
4. How many 1/2/3/4/5 star ratings did you give?
5. What was your favourite book/books?
6. Which book(s) did you like least?
7. Was there a book that really surprised you?
8. Who were your favourite characters?
9. Which characters did you dislike most?
10. Did you discover a new author this year whom you'll definitely be reading more from in 2015?
11. What was the shortest book you read?
12. What was the chunkiest book you read?
13. Which of your read books has the highest average rating (and did you agree)?
14. Which of your read books has the lowest average rating (and did you agree)?
15. Which book made the biggest impression on you?

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15867 comments 1. How many books did you read this year?
So far, 60.

2. How many pages did you read in total?
24260

3. What's the average amount of pages per book?
404.33

4. How many 1/2/3/4/5 star ratings did you give?
1 star: 0
2 stars: 3
3 stars: 15
4 stars: 29
5 stars: 13

5. What was your favourite book/books?
I read so many fantastic books! I started the Outlander series, which I will definitely continue reading. Also The Riyria Revelations, starting with Theft of Swords was great. I also loved for example The Rosie Project, Gone with the Wind, A Thousand Splendid Suns and Burial Rites, The Wise Man's Fear and The Book Thief. Haha, it seems I'm just summing up my 5 star books ;-)

6. Which book(s) did you like least?
There were 3 books I rated 2 stars: Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, American Gods and Sophie's Choice. The latter was the very first book I read this year, and remained my least favourite all through the year. I was also very disappointed by A Discovery of Witches of which I had expected much more.

7. Was there a book that really surprised you?
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. I had expected it to be complex and perhaps boring, but I actually could not stop reading it.

8. Who were your favourite characters?
Hadrian and Royce from The Riyria Revelations, Jamie from the Outlander series, Don Tillmann from The Rosie Project, Liesel from The Book Thief.

9. Which characters did you dislike most?
Not because they are bad or evil people, I just disliked their personality: Sidda from Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Stingo from Sophie's Choice

10. Did you discover a new author this year whom you'll definitely be reading more from in 2015?
Diana Gabaldon, Hannah Kent (or whenever she will publish her next book), Michael J. Sullivan, Susanna Kearsley, Kevin Hearne, Khaled Hosseini, Sarah Waters

11. What was the shortest book you read?
Not counting short stories, that was The Whale Rider at 150 pages.

12. What was the chunkiest book you read?
Voyager (1059 pages), closely followed by Gone with the Wind (1037)

13. Which of your read books has the highest average rating (and did you agree)?
The Wise Man's Fear has 4.56, and I agree, it was fantastic! I'm not sure if I would count it for 2014, even though ŷ does, because I read most of it in December 2013, and the last bit in January. The highest-rated book I read completely in 2014 is Gifts of the Peramangk, which has 4.44. I enjoyed it, but 4.44 is very high. It's probably due to the fact that it has only 66 ratings.

14. Which of your read books has the lowest average rating (and did you agree)?
Rose of Sarajevo has 3.45. I understand why it wouldn't get a very high rating, but I think it deserves more.

15. Which book made the biggest impression on you?
A Thousand Splendid Suns, it had a huge impact on me.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments 1. How many books did you read this year?
61

2. How many pages did you read in total?
28,033

3. What's the average number of pages per book?
460

4. How many 1/2/3/4/5 star ratings did you give?
1 star - 0
2 stars - 3
3 stars - 8
4 stars - 24
5 stars - 26

5. What was your favourite book/books?
The Shadow of the Wind, The Sunne in Splendour - A Novel of Richard III, The Name of the Wind, Hurt, The Miniaturist, Theft of Swords, The Regeneration Trilogy: Regeneration; the Eye in the Door; the Ghost Road and Mr Mercedes. I have read lots of great books this year but these are the ones that really stood out.

6. Which book/books did you like the least?
Red Rising, Dance of Shadows and The Woman in Black: Angel of Death were all 2 star reads for me. 'Red Rising' is my least favourite book of the year. I seem to be in the minority as most people seem to rave about it but I really did not like it at all. I was also disappointed in The White Princess, Frog Music and Prince of Thorns. They were ok but I expected more from them.

7. Was there a book that really surprised you?
Half Bad. I don't normally like books about witches and I can be a bit hit-and-miss with young adult books so I wasn't expecting to enjoy it very much. However, I ended up loving it and will definitely continue with the rest of the series.

8. Who were your favourite characters?
Kvothe from The Name of the Wind, Daniel Sempere and Fermin from The Shadow of the Wind, Hadrian and Royce from Theft of Swords

9. Which characters did you dislike the most?
Ambrose from The Name of the Wind, Inspector Fumero from The Shadow of the Wind, Brady Hartfield from Mr Mercedes and Assef from The Kite Runner

10. Did you discover a new author this year whom you'll definitely be reading more from in 2015?
Patrick Rothfuss, Carlos Ruiz Zafón, Sharon Kay Penman, Michael J. Sullivan, Jessie Burton, Sally Green, Phil Rickman, Pat Barker. Again there are others but I can't list them all otherwise this post would go on for ages ;)

11. What was the shortest book you read?
Giovanni's Room (159 pages)

12) What was the chunkiest book you read?
The Count of Monte Cristo (1276 pages)

13. Which of your books has the highest average rating (and did you agree)?
The Wise Man's Fear has 4.56. I am currently reading it and have a long way still to go but I think I am going to agree. It is brilliant so far!

14. Which book has the lowest average rating (and did you agree)?
Frog Music has 3.13. I do agree with this rating. It was pretty disappointing.

15. Which book made the biggest impact impact on you?
The Regeneration Trilogy: Regeneration; the Eye in the Door; the Ghost Road. I experienced so many different emotions whilst reading this trilogy and it really opened my eyes to the psychological impact of the First World War.

I have set a goal of 20 more books by the end of the year...no reason to keep this one in.

At 52076 at the moment.

3. What's the average amount of pages per book?
287
4. How many 1/2/3/4/5 star ratings did you give?
♥♡♥♡ ~ 17
♡♡♡♡ ~ 82
★★ ~ 68
✰✰ ~ 14
5. What was your favorite book/books?
Thank you Travis for Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard series
The Lies of Locke Lamora, Red Seas Under Red Skies, The Republic of Thieves

The Light Between Oceans, M.L. Stedman (Got teary eyed. I hate that!)

Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell (Helped to know the structure ahead of time.)

In the Tall Grass, Stephen King (Hey, it's The King. Great "take a trip" audio.)

The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror, Christopher Moore (Tickled my Funny Bone.)

Fingersmith and The Little Stranger by Sarah (WTF?!)Waters

A Boy And His Dog, Harlan Ellison (A very old Don Johnson Movie was based on this story)

Two Boys Kissing, David Levithan (We've come a long way, but not there yet.)

The Water of the Hills, Marcel Pagnol (I wanted to strangle Ugolin, the Papet and most of the townsfolk. Revenge is indeed a dish best served cold!)

The Ocean at the End of the Lane, Neil Gaiman (Read the dead tree version, 2013 and then listened again on audio, 2014.)

Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury (Another re-read..from a 4 star hardback to a 5 star audio)

Nelson Mandela's Favorite African Folktales, Nelson Mandela (IN AUDIO with celebrity narrators)

The Dark of Deep Below (The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle #2), Patrick Rothfuss
(Had to see what they were up to, after the excellent The Thing Beneath the Bed surprise.)

Child 44 (Leo Demidov, #1), Tom Rob Smith (I think of this book, even though ten months have gone by. )

6. Which book(s) did you like least?
How to Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You I was expecting more cat behavior humor...not cats dressed in business suits acting like humans.

Unspoken Secrets. Horrible editing, missed opportunities for world building, after the fact disclosures. Almeta’s Review of Unspoken Secrets.

7. Was there a book that really surprised you?
Fingersmith, Sarah Waters

The Old Man, Daphne du Maurier (This is a short story in The Birds and Other Stories. The first in the collection is the one that the movie was inspired by, but not really the same at all. I suggest you read a couple more of the shorts. Overall, the middle ones get weaker…BUT the last is a 7-star read! DO NOT skip it.)

Child 44
8. Who were your favourite characters?
Jean Tannen, a member of the Gentlemen Bastards.. I like Locke Lamora. He certainly has spunk, but I like how Jean puts him in his place when his head gets too big, or how Jean tricks Locke out of his Pity Party moods.

9. Which characters did you dislike most? BUT I WAS SUPPOSED TO
the Papet from The Water of the Hills

Sir Percival Glyde and Count Fosco from The Woman in White

Richard 'Gentleman' Rivers in Fingersmith
10. Did you discover a new author this year whom you'll definitely be reading more from in 2015?
New 2014 Harlan Ellison, Scott Lynch, Tom Rob Smith.

These were new at end of 2013, so I’m counting them also! Neil Gaiman, Sarah Waters, Jonathan L. Howard, Patrick Rothfuss

10a. Doesn't write fast enough! Tana French, Gillian Flynn

10b. Neglected authors that I wanted to be reading:
Bentley Little, Stephen King, Colin Cotterill, Christopher Moore, Robert McCammon, F. Paul Wilson, Tom Robbins, Harlan Coben, John Connolly, Michael Connelly, Christopher Brookmyre, Jim Thompson (view spoiler)

11. What was the shortest book you read?
I read a pile of short books in order to make connections for my Voluminous Volumes and Miniature Matchmakers (Chunkster Challenge)
13 pages was the shortest

These two were the best:
38 pages A Boy And His Dog, Harlan Ellison

61 pages In the Tall Grass, Stephen King

12. What was the chunkiest book you read?
672 pages The Woman in White, Wilkie Collins

13. Which of your read books has the highest average rating (and did you agree)?
The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, William Joyce, 4.56 rating from 4942 readers. No, I gave it 2 stars.

14. Which of your read books has the lowest average rating (and did you agree)?
Return of the Dark Virgin, Samuel Franklin Griffin-Average rating of 2.00...I had to agree, I was the only one rating it!

Okay, seriously...
Books by Larry McMurtry was given 3.14/1,153. I gave it a 2.

The Last Werewolf (The Last Werewolf #1), Glen Duncan 3.47/10,400. I gave it a 4.
So, no on both counts...one lower one higher than the rest of the pack.

15. Which book made the biggest impression on you?
Child 44. A compelling mystery, character tension, and a backdrop of bad times in Russian history.

Pendergast series. So many long series take so much time to catch up on

Another great new author/ series Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey

ok done for real now

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I agree, Almeta - I am SURE you will like The Kingkiller books!

I never added Frog Music to my TBR because of all of the negative reviews. Two or three and I might try it, but this one had way too many disappointed readers.

I am just getting ready to leave work (it has been a LONG day, expensive too - I had to pay for my daughter's sick cat). I will get back after I review my books and have time to enter everything.

Great topic, Peggy! Yeah, Stingo is up there for one of my least favorite guys too.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Love this thread, Peggy.

For me in 2014...

80 books, totaling 24,998 pages, averaging 312 pages per book.

I don’t have patience to read books I don’t/won't like so consequently the books I complete almost always rate 3 to 5 stars.

Favorite books:
Red Dust Road

Yoga Bitch: One Woman's Quest to Conquer Skepticism, Cynicism, and Cigarettes on the Path to Enlightenment

Stranger in the Forest: On Foot Across Borneo

Four Seasons in Rome: On Twins, Insomnia, and the Biggest Funeral in the History of the World.

Book that really surprised me: Agatha H and the Airship City (didn't think I'd like but totally did).

Favorite characters:
Madeleine Albright in Madam Secretary: A Memoir (nonfiction)

Professor Urban Chronotis from Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (fiction).

Most disliked characters:
August in Water for Elephants(scary, sadistic sicko, maybe pitiable)

Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment (miserable, tiresome sicko, definitely pitiable)

Dr. Bob in Ask Bob (narcissistic, unreliable mr nice guy all because author failed to deliver on dr bob cool veterinarian story that was promised but totally not delivered).

Among new or new-to-me authors I want to read more of:

Dawn Powell
Iris Murdoch
Carlos Ruiz Zafón
Twan Eng Tan
Anthony Doerr
Adam Gopnik
Wilkie Collins
Andrea Camilleri
Alan Bradley.

Sarah | 18545 comments Oh yes Detta (Drawing of the Three) was certainly an unlikable character as was the bondsmage (Locke Lamora) and August (Watr for Elephants). I think I should have put Horns in my favourites too. So many good books. I've just been looking at this year compared to last and I have quite a lot less 5 stars than the previous year. I think I used to give 5 stars quite freely but I have consciously put more thought in to my ratings this year.

I like the "Authors who don't write quick enough" Almeta. I'd agree on Gillian Flynn (yet to start Tana French series), I'd also add Patrick Rothfuss and George RR Martin to those.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 3981 comments Wow. This thread is huge. I have added too many of the faves in here to my TBR. I have read all the comments and now I am all googly-eyed.

Will be back when I have more time to look through my books.

Almeta, how do you make the stars and hearts like that?

Totally agree about Horns, Sarah. I gave it 5 stars. Lee could easily have gone into least favourite characters list too.

It really all depends on your computer and keyboard. Not everyone has the same capabilities...but some can use a combination of the ALT key and the numbers from the numeric key pad.

ALT and 1 gives me
ALT and 2 gives me
ALT and 3 gives me

Here a list of some of the symbols.

BUT to tell the truth I usually just copy from a document on which I save trivial stuff and just paste the symbol. Here are some I've saved:

Feel free to steal copy/paste anything from me!
