Excellent question, Dani!
If you look at the comment box below this message, you should see light gray text at the top of the box that says "add book/author." Put your cursor there and click.
A small window will appear. The window has 2 tabs. It opens on the "book" tab where you can search for the book you want. If you click on the "author" tab you can search for an author.
While on the "book" tab, type the name of the book you are searching for and click on "search." One or more books will be listed that exactly or closely match your search. Hopefully the book you are searching for will be listed. For example, if you search for "Night in Twisted River" you will find our currently monthly read.
Just click on "add" to add a link. The link will appear at the bottom of your comment box.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.

Have you tried to narrow your book search down on your shelves by selecting more than one of your shelves at a time yet?
You may find this function useful.
First select one of your shelves that you want to narrow down.
My example: double-dog-dare (group read challenge)
Click on "select multiple" link displayed just below your shelves.
The list of shelves will display with a plus sign (+) next to those shelves not yet selected.
Click the plus sign to right of shelf that you wish to include in your search.
My example: e-dingus (Books that I will read on my Nook)
This will display all books in my challenge shelf that I have also shelved as available on an ereader.
If you wish to narrow your search further, you can Click on another +.
My example: packing-heat (books that provoke deep thought)
Now I have a list of books that meet my group's challenge, that are available on an ereader, that also provide a "food for thought" read as well.
You will notice that across the top "My Books:...." will show the names of the shelves that you have chosen. Click on the X to close each one, when you are finished.
Imagine the possibilities! AND try it.

Scout wrote: "...see a photo on the Internet ...to post to a discussion. Can anyone tell me how to do this?"
Ok, I did it! lol
Now....
I went on the internet and found an image I liked.
I right-clicked on the image and clicked on "Properties."
I made sure the width was 0-400 pixels and that the height was 0-1000 pixels.
I then highlighted and copied the "Address (URL)" for the image.
I pasted the address in my comment.
The next part I can't type here because the system tries to turn what I type into an image. You will have to look at the "(some html is ok)" link and follow the instructions (I didn't bother with adding the html for width, height, and description). Type the text that starts with "[image error]" at the end of your URL. Don't leave anything out (quotation marks, backslash, etc.).
Maybe someone else can explain this better?

There may be more than one way to do this, but this is the method that I recently used.
1. Go to "My Books".
2. At the left, all of your bookshelves are listed. Just above "all" is the faded word "bookshelves", and next to that a link to click called "(edit)". Click that link.
3. When your list of shelves appear with different checkable options, you will notice to the far left an "x" next to each individual personal shelf. Click on the "x" next to the shelf that you wish to eliminate. You will get a popup box asking you to confirm or cancel the deletion.
4. Waaa Laaa! (same as voila`!) Kiss that shelf goodbye.

Want to display certain shelves first in your lists?
Go to "My Books" and click on the "Edit" link at the left (by "Bookshelves").
Place a check mark in the "sticky" box next to the shelves that you chose to display first.
Your chosen few will stick just below the exclusive shelves.
STICKY SHELVES. WhooHoo!

Oh, and right on the same "Edit Shelves" page is a check mark option, "recs". This is used to check which shelves you wish GoodReads to use in making community recommendations.
So if you don't want recommendations from your "This Book Stinks" shelf, you better uncheck it!

Did you know you can view any of King's reviews/comments/blurbs I've accumulated by reading my review of any book on my
sai-king-recommends bookshelf?
In some cases, all I've typed in my review are words like: "Stephen King recommended book." This is because I didn't find anything specific King said about the book other than evidence that he recommended it. (Many of these books were mentioned in King's non-fiction books as recommended reading, but King didn't say anything "quotable" about them.)
In other cases, there will be one or more quotes from Stephen King typed in my review of a book. (Many of these came from his Entertainment Weekly "Pop of King" columns, interviews, introductions, book blurbs, etc.)
In addition, if I'VE read the book AND reviewed it, I will have added my personal review text BELOW the Stephen King information.
(NOTE: I am slowly going back through all my listings and adding source material for EVERY book I have on my sai-king-recommends bookshelf, just so there is no doubt my list is up-to-date and accurate. Yes, I'm crazy like that!)
Anyway, having said all THAT, you may be wondering: "HOW DO I READ YOUR REVIEW, DEBRA? CAUSE I'M JUST DYING TO KNOW WHAT THE KING HIMSELF HAD TO SAY ABOUT SOME OF THOSE BOOKS!"
Ask and you shall receive, Oh Constant Reader! Here ya go:
1. Click here:
sai-king-recommends bookshelf
2. A list of books will appear with the following column headings:
NOTE: As of this writing (10/2/11), there are 721 books on my sai-king-recommends bookshelf. Number 721 is: "The Narrows (Harry Bosch, #10)" by Michael Connelly. It has an average rating of 3.87 (right now) and I've not read it or rated it yet. I added it 9/7/11. With me so far?
3. Here comes the moment you've been waiting for! Haha! To the right of the column "date added" (and next to the listed book), is an important little word: view. Click on "view" to view MY review of any book on the bookshelf.
Voila!!
(NOTE: You can do this for anybody's books on anybody's bookshelves, as long as they have their profile listed as public or you are their friend.)
Now, to belabor the point further...
For the example given above: # 721, "The Narrows (Harry Bosch, #10)" by Michael Connelly, you will see the following when you click on "view:"
---------------
Stephen King recommended book. In EW, 5/21/04, It's Alive! Alive!, Pop of King, he says: "There's little romantic in ''The Narrows,'' by Michael Connelly (Little, Brown, $25.95), but one does not enter the dark world of ex -- LAPD detective Harry Bosch expecting hearts and flowers. Connelly doesn't always write about Bosch; I've always thought his best book was the gruesome (and excruciatingly suspenseful) ''The Poet,'' published in the mid-'90s. Although the climax of ''The Poet'' was satisfying enough, it was open-ended; one could not be completely sure the serial killer had gotten his just deserts."
"Turns out he didn't. ''The Narrows'' is a sequel to ''Poet,'' and if you save this for hot weather, forget the air conditioner; the chills come built in. The story is told in slightly dislocated fashion -- first-person-narrative chapters from the Bosch point of view interwoven with third-person chapters from the point of view of FBI agent Rachel Walling -- but the clarity of Connelly's writing and the steadily building pace of his narrative more than compensate for the slightly uncomfortable feel of that back-and-forth. This is scarifying in a big way -- a Thomas Harris kind of scary, which is high praise indeed."

One last thing... I promise. You can sort a bookshelf by most of columns. So, if you want to see the list sorted by title, click on "title." If you want to see the list sorted by author, click on "author."
WHEW! I think that just about covers it!

How do I add a link and display it as a word or phrase?
If you want to post a link to a page in a particular site, you first need to go to the destination and copy the url. Paste the url into your post.
For example if you wanted to direct people to the Stephen King Recommends "How-To" link, you would paste this url /topic/show/....
If you would rather display descriptive words for the link, instead of the url -
♦Immediately to the left of the url string, type a left pointing caret (<) followed by the characters a href= " (that includes the a and the quotation mark).
♦Then at the end of the string, type (">YOUR WORDS), without the parenthesis,
♦Followed immediately by a left pointing caret (<) and a slash (/) and the letter a and the right pointing caret (>)
♦Replace YOUR WORDS with the text that you want to display.
In this example I chose How Do I Do That?

Hi guys:
Almeta put together a list of authors Stephen King has recommended. These books are listed in the "Authors List" discussion thread under "Sai King's Favorite Authors." You have to pick your challenge books from the list of these authors, one book for each author you choose. We will be adding more authors to that list.
Hope that helps.

There must be an easier way to select shelves,
than having to scroll down each time.
When picking shelves you don't have to scroll up and down the list, you can filter the shelves by typing the first letter(s).
When the drop-down menu is on display, just type the first letter of the shelf that you want to check. That shelf and all others beginning with that letter will be displayed.
e.g. If I type in a "d", my doorstops, double-dog-dare, double-dog-dare-US, double dog-dare-UN and dying-to-read shelves are the only ones displayed.
If I had typed in "dou", I would have gotten only my challenge shelves (Double-Dog-Dare...)

than having to scroll down each time.
A much more managable list.

How can I find specific words in GoodReads? Well, how about this search technique?
From Google help:
"Search within a specific website (site:)
Google allows you to specify that your search results must come from a given website. For example, the query [ iraq site:nytimes.com ] will return pages about Iraq but only from nytimes.com. The simpler queries [ iraq nytimes.com ] or [ iraq New York Times ] will usually be just as good, though they might return results from other sites that mention the New York Times. You can also specify a whole class of sites, for example [ iraq site:.gov ] will return results only from a .gov domain and [ iraq site:.iq ] will return results only from Iraqi sites."
So, if for a challenge, let’s say you needed to find the title of a book that contained the word white; query Google with “White site:goodreads.com. The returned results will give links to such books on GoodReads. (and quotes and authors, etc.)

You guys are GREAT!!!
I've seen these before - a few times - and lost them. Printed it out this time (change to UNICODE setting first).
I've also added SEVERAL books to my TBR list since joining y'all. Love it.
I want a list of books that I can use as an “acquisition guide at the store or library.
Open the shelf from which you want a list generated. I would recommend a manageable shelf, not your entire 3,000 volume wish list! You know, like the fifty that you need to complete a challenge, etc.
Above the list of books, to the right, there are options: covers, table and print. Click on print. A new window will open.
Click on the shelf settings link to alter the shelf settings panel, to include the columns that you wish to see in your list, and to remove those that you don’t.
Print this page. Retrieve your list.
At this point you may choose to permanently save these settings, or to e”X”it from the screen without saving.
Good Hunting!!!
Thanks to Ben Babcock for this idea.

For example; I would Click Off the Cover box, make sure that the author, title, average rating, shelves and notes are Clicked On. The rest Off. This is all I think that I would need to make my decisions at the store or library.

Just a rating tells me nothing I need to know to make a decision as to whether or not I want to read a book. I want to view only the reviews with words.
You too? Then....
Go to the book page and scroll down until you see the heading Community Reviews. Just below that are some teeny-tiny links.
Click open filter and drag your cursor across to the words text-only. This should display only those reviewer entries with actual words to say.
In addition, you can filter out all but the 5-stars ratings, by clicking on the number rating and text-only. (Or maybe you'd like to filter for the nasty 1-star ratings, which are often more revealing!)
AND you can choose whether to view for all editions or just this edition only.
