Laura | 2484 comments She likes the heat, cold, snow and doesn't mind the rain. It rained so hard it was just impossible to get outside and then right before I went to bed it stopped shortly, thankfully. I no sooner turned the lights off and I could hear rain again. I'm not sure I've seen it rain that hard before.
As Alicia said, it was a great day to curl up with a book.

MountainKat | 30650 comments Here is Task 6:

37. Read 6 5 books set in the US.

You can use the setting in the book details on the main book page, precis, tags or lists to qualify you book for this task. It can be a city, city and state or just state to show your qualification. Please remember to show how you know your book qualifies - that is what I need to confirm.

Laura | 2484 comments I'm reading a Susan Mallery book that fits.

Megan | 1002 comments Hey I'm reading Taken Home actually says Texas in the book description but also has a tag of setting texas which is helpful.

I can potentially pick up another book if you ladies would like and I was thinking of reading Closer to You which again says the place in the description but no other proof aside from the series name? Can always pick another book just that was another idea..

One other thing is unfortunately my grandad has taken a bad turn and hes gone into palliative care, think thats spelt right but as I'm the nearest to my grandparents and its just really me & then my uncle I'm helping out my grandma. So I'm just warning you so if I go quiet tomorrow its just because I'm staying over here and reading won't be top priority. Still OK to carry on this challenge I just won't be as quick reading. So sorry!!

message 205: by AliciaJ (new)

AliciaJ | 1865 comments I'm reading Emerald Blaze, it's set in Texas.

message 206: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2484 comments Oh no, Megan. I'm so sorry to hear about your granddad. Definitely do what you need to do.

I have 20% left of my book so I can pick up the other one.

37. Read 5 books set in the US.
Irresistible (Buchanans, #2) by Susan Mallery
read: Sept 23
pages: 368 kindle edition (GR)
rating: 4 stars
qualifies: set in the US- setting= USA ( see above book link)
review: Sweet, HEA. I'd recommend reading this series in order as book 2 does mention the other Buchanan siblings several times. I liked the slow buildup between Elisa & Walker and the elderly neighbor is a great secondary character. Looking forward to finishing this series.

I’m so sorry to hear about your granddad Megan. Like Laura said, you do what you need—family comes first. I’ll pick up another book too, I just finished mine so I can easily get the other one out of the way today.

Room for More (Cranberry Inn, #2) by Beth Ehemann
read: Sept 23
pages: 311 kindle edition (GR)
rating: 3 stars
qualifies: set in the US -setting = Minnesota (US) (see link above)
review: Cute, hockey romance. I liked the reference to some of the hockey teams (Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canuks). This being the second book in the series I can see both Kacie and Brody growing as characters -I think Kacie more so in this book than Brody. Although, Brody is present with his big gestures (same as last book) I didn't like him as much in this book because of some of his actions. I think I liked book 1 better :-)

Taken Home Taken Home (Lone Star Burn, #3) by Ruth Cardello
Read: 24th Sept
Pages: 234
Rating: 4 stars
Qualifies: Set in Texas, tagged here called setting Texas or Setting California
Review: This was pretty good.
Mason was alright but Chelle was a little annoying, just overally very naive and a little immature for her age range. Probably because of her family.
I will say this didn't feel like too much of a western so a little disappointing..

Laura | 2484 comments AliciaJ wrote: "I did read both my books but can’t post the reviews on my phone."

I rarely use the app anymore. I usually open up the chrome browser on my phone and log in that way(there's option at the bottom of the screen that allows you to pick the desktop version)

You can add books, make links, open links, see gifs, etc almost all of what you can do on a laptop except the view is smaller.... I got used to it pretty quick!

message 219: by Megan (new)

Megan | 1002 comments Same I hate the app.

Hes getting worse. He was semi with it earlier but hes not anymore tonight. Hes got dementia and parkinsons so its like his body is failing him and he forgets. The nurses have been good. I'm just worried to leave my grandma.

37. Read 5 books set in the US.

Emerald Blaze (Hidden Legacy, #5) by Ilona Andrews Emerald Blaze
Read: 9/23
Pages: 400
Rating: 5 Stars
Qualifies: from precis: Catalina can earn her family some protection working as deputy to the Warden of Texas, overseeing breaches of magic law in the state,

Review: I have decided that this series by Ilona Andrews is better than any of the others, even the Kate Daniels series, which is really saying something since that series is a-MAZ-ing. But the cast of characters in Hidden Legacy are somehow even more special to me. And in this book especially, since we get to see Catalina come into her own as the Head of the Baylor House. She kicks ass all the way through the story, but also handles her relationships with her family and the man she wants to be with in a mature and honest way that doesn't leave any room for silly misunderstandings. I'm a diehard fan, and I cannot wait for the next book.

37. Read 5 books set in the US.

Common Goal (Game Changers, #4) by Rachel Reid Common Goal
Read: 9/24
Pages: 282
Rating: 2 Stars
Qualifies: from precis: Graduate student Kyle Swift moved to New York nursing a broken heart.

Review: Well I have to say that this one was a serious let-down from the previous books in this series. Several things bothered me from the very beginning. The pacing of the story was so slow, I fell asleep a couple of times trying to get through it. The characters were boring, which is really hard to do when the book is supposed to be about hockey players! But there was zero spark between the MCs, which really killed the whole story for me. On top of that, nothing really happened in the book either. Eric, the hockey player, retired. Whoop-di-doo. I'm writing this one off as a loss, and I'll be way more careful about pre-ordering books from new to me authors.

I can empathize with you both. My grandfather passed away from Parkinson's and my grandmother had dementia. Growing old can be horrible.
I'm sure both your families are appreciative of the care and support you are both providing.

Just for Now (Escape to New Zealand, #3) by Rosalind James
Read: Sept 26
Rating : 3 stars
Pages: 312 kindle edition (GR)
Qualifies: set outside the US- see series title and/or precis (booklink above)
Review: I like this book. Cute story, sweet characters (especially the children) and a chance to learn a bit more about past characters from this series (can be read out of order) I was very appreciative for the glossary at the end of the book so some of the words could be translated. Only 3 stars though because the conflict wasn't my favorite.

review: This is a cute story, funny at times because Clare's actions, pride and temper sometimes get the better of her. (view spoiler) Gareth is a good balance for Clare. I like how their relationship grows and builds into something lasting.

End of the Line (Lady Blue Crew, #1) by Lynn Hagen End of the Line
Read: 9/26
Pages: 136
Rating: 3 Stars
Qualifies: from precis: Giovanni Gallardo is on the run. With only a knapsack in his hands, he boards a ship to get as far away from earth as he possibly can.

Review: This was just a pure escapist fun fantastical space pirate story, with shifters and some blue-skinned characters as well. It was basically porn set in space LOL. Giovanni, or Gigi as he's called, stows away on a space ship to escape a firefight. He gets found by the commander of the ship, who immediately goes into the mating frenzy once he sees Gigi, and claims him right away. Of course, the commander is some kind of wolf shifter, but I'm never sure what he looks like, except that he's huge and very naked. It goes from there, with Gigi joining the crew, who ends up being chased from one end of the galaxy to the other by Gigi's previous master/owner. It all ends well, with Gigi and the commander vanquishing the evil master, and living happily ever after on the spaceship.

Megan | 1002 comments Hi guys, I was reading but sadly my grandad passed away this evening. I'll try and finish it tomorrow. So sorry.

message 242: by Laura (new)

Laura | 2484 comments Hi Megan, oh no, so sorry to hear that. My sincere condolences to you and your family. Hugs.

Take care of you and your grandmother. I wouldn't worry about finishing the book. I'll ask MKat how the pass works and we can use it this time. I don't mind reading another book to cover. Hopefully, she will take pity on us and give us a few tasks that you can pass on until you are ready to join us again.

message 243: by MountainKat, Moderator (new)

MountainKat | 30650 comments I'm sorry Megan.

If you want to use the pass, all you need to do is say that you are using it. In this case, your team can complete the task and get the next one whether you comment or not. If you post a completion in the next couple of days, I will not count it as a pass for you.

In either case though, the task needs to be completed. So two more books need to be finished and posted.

Of Silk and Steam (London Steampunk, #5) by Bec McMaster Of Silk and Steam
Read: 9/27
Pages: 448
Rating: 5 Stars
Qualifies: Series is set in London
Review: This is the conclusion to the London Steampunk series, and it was exhilarating. The fight at the end was everything I had hoped for, even though one of my favorite characters got killed off. But to see the prince consort finally get what was coming to him made it all worth it. And as for Aramina and Barrons, they were perfect for each other. The heat between them was palpable, and when they finally got together, it was scorching hot. All in all, another excellent story from this author.

Thief of Dreams (Court of Dreams, #0.5) by Bec McMaster Thief of Dreams
Read: 9/28
Pages: 126
Rating: 5 Stars
Qualifies: takes place in the Court of Dreams
Review: This is an excellent start to a new series by one of my favorite authors. Zemira is tasked by her evil father to infiltrate the Court of Dreams and steal the prince's Dragon Heart. Once Zemira meets Prince Keir and spends time with him, she starts to have mixed feelings about her task. Once again, this author takes the reader on a fantastic journey with compelling characters and exciting plot. I can't wait to find out what happens next in this new series.
