I'm starting the year carrying over 2 books Daughter of Moloka'i (Moloka'i, #2) by Alan Brennert on audio and The Girl in the Tower (Winternight Trilogy, #2) by Katherine Arden on ebook.
I'll also be starting Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth on hardcopy to finally finish off that series

I hope you enjoy ‘The Girl in the Tower, it was my favourite book from the winternight trilogy.

Jo Elliott | 1826 comments I'm carrying over a couple of books from 2020 as well, so I'll be starting the year off with these:
Seasons of War (Skulduggery Pleasant, #13) by Derek Landy
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
These Violent Delights (These Violent Delights, #1) by Chloe Gong

message 5: by Jaya (new)

Jaya (jaya_08) | 59 comments I am continuing with my read of Educated by Tara Westover

message 6: by Gord (new)

Gord | 965 comments I might as well update what I've read

The great: Marked in Flesh (The Others, #4) by Anne Bishop Strangers in Death (In Death, #26) by J.D. Robb

The alright: Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear (Light Novel) Vol. 4 by Kumanano Didn't I Say To Make My Abilities Average In The Next Life?! Light Novel Vol. 8 by FUNA Fairy Tail, Vol. 01 (Fairy Tail, #1) by Hiro Mashima Fairy Tail, Vol. 02 (Fairy Tail, #2) by Hiro Mashima

Then there is Demons of the Ocean (Vampirates, #1) by Justin Somper . This is going to get a special rant. This is a book about vampire pirates in the year 2500. I wasn't expecting a literary master piece at all when I entered this. Honestly I was just expecting some good old stupid fun. Somehow the author managed to make this boring. First of all the year 2500 thing meant nothing. This could have been set in the 1800's just as easily. There was so much squandered potential for cool tech mixed with old pirate ways. Think laser muskets or what not. Then for a book about vampire pirates the actual vampire pirates were barely in the book and when they were there they did nothing. The author even screwed up ninjas in this. I finished this book bored and just disappointed.

dana stanford | 1 comments I started The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. 91 chapters to get through! Game on!!

message 11: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1826 comments I decided to give up with These Violent Delights (These Violent Delights, #1) by Chloe Gong for now, I only had 11 days left on my Adobe reader to finish and I wasn't going to so I didn't really want to push it. I'll mark it as DNF on Netgalley and maybe come back to it another time. I have too many books on my Netgalley shelf to be dithering with ones I'm not going to finish! Instead, I'll be moving on to Burn Our Bodies Down by Rory Power

message 12: by May (new)

May hey everyone!! i'm currently reading "the scorch trials" (the maze runner series 2) from James Dashner, "city of lost souls" from Cassandra Clare and "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" from Yuval Noah Harari. There are so many books I want to read this year such as "the shining" from Stephen King, some more books from Agatha Christie, "little women" from Louisa May Alcott and etc.

message 13: by May (new)

May if you have any book recommendations especially on classics i'd love to hear about it since i'm trying to get into that :)

91 chapters... wow! The book sounds really interesting! I am intrigued by the fact that some random dude left a girl his inheritance. I may have to add this to my tbr.

Honestly nothing really, it was fine, but I only had 11 days left on my Adobe Reader (it was a Netgalley book so you only get 55 days before it expires) and I was only about 4 chapters in, and I didn't want to race through it and not really enjoy it, so I thought it would be better to come back to it later when there was no clock on when I needed to finish it. I also have A LOT of books on my Netgalley shelf to get through, so I thought it was better to move on from one I probably wasn't going to finish in time!

I will hopefully be ready to join you with ACOWAR by Friday, I'm really close to the end of my current read.

Jo Elliott | 1826 comments May wrote: "if you have any book recommendations especially on classics i'd love to hear about it since i'm trying to get into that :)"

I'm not a massive classics person but a few I have enjoyed:
-Black Beauty by Anna Sewell
-Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild (her Shoes books in general are really good, if you like this one, I'd also recommend Dancing Shoes)
-What Katy Did by Susan Coolidge
I don't know if it necessarily counts as a classic, but it is an older book, Flambards by KM Peyton is another really good one.

Gwen | 83 comments May wrote: "if you have any book recommendations especially on classics i'd love to hear about it since i'm trying to get into that :)"

I'm trying to read more classics too. A few I read are:
- Frankenstein by Mary Shelly (I didn't enjoy this one much, but apparently most people do so I'd say give it a try)
- Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
- The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
- The Complete Sherlock Holmes (I don't know it counts as a classic but I liked it anyway)
- Narnia by C.S. Lewis (again, I don't know if it counts. I didn't like most of the stories, but again, a lot of people do)
- Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

One I started but never finished is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. English was a bit too difficult for me back then but I absolutely loved the parts I was able to read and now his other books are on my tbr.

May, Pride and Predjudice is a good classic, I enjoyed it way more than I expected. I'm also a big of Mice and Men fan. Oh and Anne of Green Gables! I also love the Iliad but I dont recommend that for most people unless you are a big Greek myth fan.

message 36: by Jo (new)

Jo Elliott | 1826 comments Finally finished Seasons of War (Skulduggery Pleasant, #13) by Derek Landy and off the mark for my 2021 reading challenge! I started this one all the way back in November thinking that despite it's considerable size, it would be super quick to read because Skulduggery always has short chapters. Oh poor sweet summer child. Yeah this one definitely dragged, and I was so excited for it after the way the last one ended but with numerous irrelevant subplots and way, way too much "journeying" I think it's fair to say this is a Skulduggery book that won't live in my heart. Oh well, hopefully the next one will be better!

Going to finally dive into A Court of Wings and Ruin (A Court of Thorns and Roses, #3) by Sarah J. Maas next.

message 37: by Gord (new)

Gord | 965 comments Another week and I've read more books.

Moon Called (Mercy Thompson, #1) by Patricia Briggs -3 Stars
Third time reading this and I'm warning up to this one finally. I love the series but I've never been a super fan of the first couple of books. I think I just have more context for what is going and more of an established connection to the characters

Storm Warning (Mage Storms #1) by Mercedes Lackey -4 Stars
The latest book in a group read of the Valdemar series. I rather enjoyed this one and I'm interested to see where this trilogy is going to go.

High Rise Invasion 01 by Tsuina Miura High Rise Invasion 02 (High-Rise Invasion, #2) by Tsuina Miura High Rise Invasion 03 (High-Rise Invasion, #3) by Tsuina Miura High Rise Invasion 04 (High-Rise Invasion, #4) by Tsuina Miura High Rise Invasion 05 by Tsuina Miura High-Rise Invasion, Vol. 6 by Tsuina Miura High Rise Invasion 07 (High-Rise Invasion, #7) by Tsuina Miura High-Rise Invasion Vol. 8 by Tsuina Miura - 3 Stars
The latest manga rabbit hole I've fallen into. It's a fairly gory death game kind of manga. The overall mystery of what is going on is my biggest driving force to keep reading right now.

Currently I've started The Poppy War (The Poppy War, #1) by R.F. Kuang and I'm a couple of chapters in and I'm enjoying it so far. It's kind of early to really say one way or another but it's starting out alright.

I finally finished The Girl in the Tower (Winternight Trilogy, #2) by Katherine Arden and am unsure how I really feel about it. The last 15% or so was quite good, the rest I again found so slow. I do think its a me problem more than the book. Unsure if I'll finish the trilogy

I do the same, I give the book a few chapters and then will put it down if it doesn't capture my attention.

I'm trying to get better at it, I've got a terrible habit of pushing through, especially with Netgalley arcs because obviously I want my ratio to be good, but it's a waste of my time to keep going with a book that's not grabbing me. I still submitted feedback for it, so it will still count towards my ratio.

Ah really, we were the complete opposites there! I wasn't actually a massive fan of the first book in the series, but the second book really grabbed me and it's just got better from there. I hope so, we've been waiting almost four years for this one, so it would be a real letdown if I didn't enjoy it!

I've finished reading Sentinel (Covenant, #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout - it was a re-read. It's my fave series and I loved re-reading it. Ready to move onto something new.

I also finished listening to From Blood and Ash (Blood and Ash, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout which is also a re-read! And started listening to A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire (Blood and Ash, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout which again is a re-read! I have a bad memory so I like to re-read before the next book in the series. As I'm in Jen's ARC team I should get book 3 in March sometime so it seemed like a good time to start my re-read/listen

And I've started reading Rhapsodic (The Bargainer, #1) by Laura Thalassa and I am loving it so far!
