A couple of things to keep in mind:

Communication is key. Please make sure to check in regularly with your team.

Let your team know if it looks like you won't get your review posted by Wednesday/Saturday, 11:59pm. You do have all of Thursday/Sunday to submit your review, but it can be intensely frustrating for your captain if they don't know when or if they can expect your review before the deadline.

If you know beforehand that you won't be able to read and review a book during a certain period of time, you can request a pre-arranged absence from me, either by posting the request in the discussion thread or by sending me a pm. The request has to be submitted before the team rolls for the time period in question, can only be approved by me as the mod in charge of running the game, and has to state a reason for the absence. (Reasons for pre-arranged absences can include e.g. going on vacation or work trips, planned hospital stays, exam period, etc.)

If you do not have a pre-arranged absence and won't be able to finish your book in time for an unforeseen reason, please let your team know as soon as possible. If the team has earned the free pass, it can be used to cover the missing review. Without a free pass, the team has to sit out the next roll.

We all know that real life gets in the way sometimes, be it through family emergencies, work emergencies, natural disasters, technical problems making it impossible to get online, or in other ways. That being said, please do keep in mind that this is a team challenge and your team relies on you to do your part unless an emergency occurs.

If you find that the pressure of keeping up with the pace of the game gets too much for you or you wish to stop playing for any other reason, you can drop out of the challenge at any time. In that case, please let your team captain and/or me know that you wish to drop out rather than just disappearing without a word so your team won't be penalized when you fail to turn in your review. Thank you!

Captain's Handbook

The team's captain is its chief organizer. This includes rolling the dice, posting the team's new spot to the team thread and the Post Your Spot thread, collecting links to team members' review posts in a single post to be linked in the Post Your Spot thread, doublechecking that books and review posts comply with requirements, reminding team members to post their reviews in time if necessary, etc.

The captain may delegate some tasks, such as rolling and posting the new spot to the team thread, to another team member if they so choose. (Either a designated roller who fulfills this role for every roll, or whichever team member is online first once rolling is possible.) Collecting reviews into a single post and posting to the Post Your Spot thread should always be handled by the captain.

Instead of having everything handled by a single team captain, teams can also choose two co-captains to handle the workload.

Selection posts are not strictly required by the game's rules and I won't be checking for them. It's up to the team captain to decide whether they want them.

If the team captain requests a pre-arranged absence, it's their responsibility to arrange for another team member to step in as temporary captain.

The team captain is my primary point of contact for the team and should allow receiving private messages.

Theo | 1929 comments Alright, I'm captain! Now, we need a team name.

I'm not good at coming up with clever names, but here's a couple of ideas from me:

All Booked Up
The Quick & the Read

Anyone else more creative than me?

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 1151 comments I like The Quick and the Read, actually!

I usually have sarcastic names. My fantasy football team was called the Slacker Strikeforce for years. Not the image we want to convey, I expect!

message 19: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments The first roll is tonight (if I don't fall asleep)!

Since Jennifer liked The Quick and the Read, we'll go with that for our team name.

Theo | 1929 comments First roll: 3

You can read the 3rd book in a series or a book written by an author whose first, middle, or last name starts with the letter 'L'

message 23: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments I'm going to read Switch by Ingrid Law, which is the 3rd book in the Savvy series.

It also qualifies for the 2-in-1 bonus point as the author's last name starts with L.

message 24: by Wolf (Alpha) (new)

Wolf (Alpha) | 247 comments I'm reading In The Afterlight which is the 3rd book in the Darkest Minds series.

It also works for the over 500 pages long bonus

message 25: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 1151 comments I have Grounds for Murder (A Coffee Lover's Mystery, #1) by Tara Lush Grounds for Murder by Tara Lush due to be read this week anyway, so I'll go with that.

message 26: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) | 1151 comments So I have a question. It says we have to post a review of the books we read. Are we just putting it on the review page that comes up when you mark a book as "read" or are we supposed to be posting it somewhere else?

message 27: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments You'll need to post a review here and it MUST include the following: Book title, author, cover, how it qualifies for the spot you're on, date finished, rating, review (min. 3 sentences)

Here's a message from Denise that includes an example review post.

message 28: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments I also wanted to remind everyone that while reviews aren't due until Sunday, it's helpful if everyone can get theirs posted on Saturday. If we're finished and ready to roll at midnight, then we can get started on the next roll as soon as possible.

Happy reading everyone!

Grounds for Murder (A Coffee Lover's Mystery, #1) by Tara Lush
By Tara Lush
Book 1 in Coffee Lover’s Mysteries
Qualifies: Author name begins with L
Started and finished 01/20/2022
Four stars.

This series is set in a coffee shop in a small coastal community in Florida. The heroine has taken over management of this family-owned business after losing her journalism job and her marriage. Her heart is definitely still with journalism with the ex-husband, not so much. He’s managed to sour her on romance for a hot minute.

When her star barista deserts her shop with no notice just before they’re supposed to compete in a coffee competition, and then turns up dead, her inner journalist refuses to rest until her questions are answered.

This book suffers from some of the usual series-firsts flaws- her father is more over-the-top than necessary, and some of the story feels a little scattered or disjointed in the first half. But the motive is unusual for cozies, the climactic scene is heightened by something mentioned subtly in passing at the beginning of the book, and the story comes together nicely at the end. I’ll be reading the second one.

Finished: 1/22/2022
Rating: ★★★★
Review: This installment in the Savvy series focuses on Gypsy Beaumont, whose savvy (or special power) is to see through time. But, after hearing alarming news that their grandmother has dementia and must move in with her family, Gypsy's savvy changes (as do her mother's and brothers'). No longer able to see the future or past, but with a new ability she has to figure out how to use, Gypsy must try to prevent her last vision from taking place. Brief mentions of previous series protagonists and more time with Beaumont family members make this a great last book in the trilogy.

I loved this book. I both love and hate how she is reunited with Liam. It has to suck that he doesn't know who she is. I loved that they figured out the governments plan and found out a way to stop it. I hate Clancy and don't trust him one bit. I was glad that we saw Zu and Chubs again. Overall an amazing book!

Theo | 1929 comments Hey Wolf! Could you edit your review post to add the book's cover? It's one of the required components.

If you're not sure how: click the add book/author link above the comment box and search for your book. Make sure the cover radio button is selected at the bottom of the box, and then click add.

Thanks!

message 38: by Theo (new)

Theo | 1929 comments Oh, okay!

I'm not sure how strict Denise will be about including the cover, but for future reference, you can also add it manually by typing [bookcover:] with your book's title between the colon and end bracket.

message 39: by Denise, Manufacturing Director (new)

Denise (destiny_chan) | 7344 comments Mod
If you can't do it for technical reasons like only having access via phone it's okay. I do need the book cover if you want to use a cover alternate though as I need to be able to see that it qualifies. In that case, if adding it manually doesn't work (dunno if that's doable on the app, especially if there are different editions with different covers and the one you want isn't the first in the list), have Theo add it to that week's team review post as a workaround.

The Burning Girls (Detective Ellie Reeves #3) by Rita Herron

Book: The Burning Girls by Rita Herron
How it fits?: #3 in Detective Ellie Reeves series
Date finished?: 1/22/2022
Rating: 4 Stars

Review:
The Burning Girls was a fantastic follow-up to Wildflower Graves with an intriguing plot connected to Ellie's past.

Detective Ellie Reeves has barely recovered from her latest brush with a serial killer when the bodies of several women begin popping up near wildfires. With the discovery of the first victim, Ellie and her colleagues at first wonder if the woman simply got caught in a fire. But when a second victim is found less than twenty-four hours later at a similar scene, Ellie wonders if there's something more sinister behind the deaths. As Ellie begins digging into the lives of the victims looking for a connection, it doesn't take long for her to find herself caught in the killer's sights.

The premise of The Burning Girls was quite interesting and pulled me in immediately. Someone is killing women, surrounding their bodies in a circle of stones, and then setting them on fire. With the first victim, the ID takes time so at first the case focuses on the second victim since she is identified right away. When more bodies begin popping up, Ellie is convinced there's a connection between the victims and begins digging into their lives. I will admit I was surprised by what the connection ended up being and how Ellie actually ended up being connected to it all. Throughout the book we're presented with a few potential suspects and I have to say I didn't expect the identity of the killer at all. Herron is great at keeping you guessing and times her reveals well for maximum impact. The ending of the book was suspenseful with some great twists and I enjoyed how everything played out.

Ellie continues to be a great main character. After the reveal of some big secrets about her family in The Silent Dolls and Wildflower Graves, Ellie has had to make some adjustments when it comes to her work. A number of townspeople have turned on Ellie and doubt her ability to adequately do her job. I liked seeing Ellie adapt to the challenges she's facing and how her investigative skills have developed as a result. Ellie once again works with FBI Special Agent Derrick Fox during the investigation. Their working relationship is on a much better footing than it was at the start of the last book. I enjoy the dynamic between these two and how well they work together.

Overall The Burning Girls was an excellent read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Frozen Souls, soon.

How it fits: #6 in Jon Reznick series

Review: Jon Reznick, sometime secret government contract operative, finds himself at odds with his contractors, his government, and NYPD after his daughter is the victim of a hit-and- run crash that leaves her seriously injured. The suspect is diplomatically protected, leaving the forces of law and order without recourse, even as it develops that this is not the suspect's only crime. What follows is a performance by Reznick that is Liam-Neesonlike in its intensity and single-mindedness. Good escapist thriller, for all that his late-breaking partnership in the last few chapters of the book challenges credulity a little.

Review: Douglas Adams had intended to continue the adventures of Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, Zaphod, and his other outrageous characters in the Hitchhiker's Guide series, but unfortunately, he died before a 6th book could be written. Using Adams's notes, Eoin Colfer (known for his children's series Artemis Fowl) was tasked with the creating a final book for the series. He does an admiral job with the absurd hilarity Adams was known for, but I found the story all a little too outrageous. It was still a light, fun read, but nothing special.
