As the Leaves Turn
Any volunteers for captain?

I can captain if needed, but I'm perfectly happy with either of you doing it if you want to!

First call is today! And it's great to choose (but not start til after first call) your free space book.
Have you both played this before? Just curious, plus I don't want to annoyingly explain things you already know.

I'd prefer not to captain this time around. I started working full time again a few weeks ago, so I'm still adjusting to the decrease in free time.

Nice idea with the free space book - I may pull something from that series too.

As the leaves turn is also pretty, particularly as in the tropics, we don't have autumn here, but there is a liquid amber on my childhood farm, that I adore seeing in all its glory if I am in South Australia when the leaves turn.
Suzanne, it would be great if you could captain as I am currently away visiting my son and typing on my phone.....
I have played bingo many times and really enjoy it.

I have been searching the shelves for Horror, which I hate and Ghosts, and Grim Reaper which are my next least favourites. I work on the principle that if I find something I don't mind reading for those topics I make note of them so I don't accidentally read them for one of the other topics where I have heaps of options.

I'm going to read:

which is shelved as vampires 14 times (p. 1 of shelves)
I SHOULD read my next Jane Yellowrock book, but my mood has been funny and this book will be much lighter.

Ooh thanks for that sounds like a nice combination for pumpkin soup.

This book has been sitting on my TBR, as a friend recommendation for several years. On the day her husband’s life support was turned off, Lissa went to a bar to get drunk. Unwittingly she became the butt of a cruel vampire bet. She is turned into a vampire and left to fend for herself. I really enjoyed Lissa’s story. Struggling to survive in this new alien world, we realise the depth of her character. She is smart, savvy and funny. She was able to challenge the traditions because she had no knowledge of them and thus was able to bring about changes for the better. 4 stars.

I know exactly what you are saying!

Thanks, there were a few lulls, and it felt like the book had three distinct parts but as a first in series it was pretty good.

Review: Eve is called to the scene of a young murder victim in what appears to be a mugging, but the evidence doesn't add up. High end manicure, expensive clothes, and the perfect splash of blood from another missing girl lead Eve to dig into the world of underage human trafficking. Eve and Roarke are an amazing team and couple as always, and the murder-mystery plot was excellent. I'm amazed at how much I continue to enjoy this series after reading all 55 currently published books. Can't wait for the next book!

Review:
I always love returning to Nocturne Falls (although I wish more of the book had been totally set in the town because I love it so much). In this book, Kora Dupree (half vampire, half reaper) is sent on a treasure hunt by an unknown person. If she succeeds, she will finally know what happened to her mother one hundred years ago. Grayson (who we have seen in previous books, as well as in the Jayne Frost series) is suspicious of Kora, and ends up helping her.
I liked seeing the world-wide supernatural treasure hunt, and I liked seeing Grayson and Kora's relationship grow. Two big shout outs:
Waffles the cat - Kora's story of adopting Waffles made me happy.
Grayson's ability to totally respect boundaries and not push. You don't see that much in romance stories.

We first encountered Nick as Cynthia’s booty call in the Vampires in America series. This book, the final in the spin-off Stone Warrior series, is his story. Unfortunately I was bored! Apart from the brief chapters at the start when we are introduced to his lover, Antonia, she doesn’t appear again until 65%, and this is supposed to be their love story. After eight 5-star reads in her Vampires in America series, this was such a disappointment from this author. 1.5 stars.

Yeah, I was so tempted so many times to abandon it, but I wanted to mark the series off as complete. I think I need to go back and reread my favourites books #1 and #2 of VIA as a palette cleanser...

/topic/show/...
The Sanderson Sisters already have three in a row - hopefully for the game and for me (I hate horror) - horror won't called

I'm 30% done with my witch book. And I'm hoping to finish an audiobook today and then my next audio is for the free space.

Triggers: (view spoiler)
I listened to this book over two days of driving, the narrator - Angela Dawe (also narrates Nalini Singh) so that was a plus straight away. Amber is a witch in a world where witches are hunted, although vampires and shifters have citizenship, so that was an interesting twist. As a witch in hiding, she works for Elite, a human only paranormal crimes bureau. With the psychic premonition of back sight she is able to view crime photos and determine if they are of human or supernatural origins.
So Sheehan has created an interesting world, but it fell away in terms of characters which often felt weak and underdeveloped. Amber was too snarky for my liking, too immature and prone to rapid mood changes. There were several plot inconsistencies and a lot of repetition which annoyed. It also ended in an odd place very abruptly with many unanswered questions, although it wasn’t a cliffhanger as such - probably just too much unexplained. However there were several plot twists that I wasn’t expecting.
One of those books where the first in series is obviously the set up for the rest of the series, I would be interested in reading the next, to see if the questions are answered and hopefully the heroine improves as well. 2.5 stars

Review: I've been avoiding this book for several months now because the longer plot of whether Lucy will agree to marry Rafe has been way to drawn out, and I needed a break from it. In this addition to the series, Lucy's cousin is cursed. The witches do a spell to turn the curse back on the person who set it on Violet and the woman dies less than a day later. Rafe and the vampires help investigate the murder. I liked the mystery plot. It was well thought out and managed to surprise me in the end. The best I can say about the tension between Rafe and Lucy is that it is finally over because it detracted from the rest of the book for me. While this is my least favorite book in the series so far, I'm happy that the larger issues are resolved and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Review: Loved, loved, loved the newest edition to the Mercy Thompson series!! I was a little worried about whether or not I would like this book. The last book was a struggle for me because Adam and Mercy were so out of sync. I was so glad to see the dynamic between the two is back to normal as it's one of my favorite parts of the series. Adam and Mercy must find Wulfe, figure out where their vampire allies have vanished, and track down an ancient artifact that is once again being using to kill victims with minor magical abilities. The main story was fascinating, and I was surprised to find out who was behind the plot. The side story of Sherwood's real identity was equally fascinating, and I look forward to seeing how that is developed in future books. Fantastic read!

I am about 30 minutes from being done with my witches book, but I need a nap first. Then I'll get my review in and request both those stamps.
And I'll probably finish my free space book tomorrow.

Review:
Brigid Heron is a healer witch who living on an island in 1922. When she casts an important spell she is thrust 100 years into the future, with no memory. The present (2022) island is a dangerous place, with monsters lurking and turning the townspeople into the Damned. And nobody can leave! Two witches who are living in Brigid's home join with her to try to save the island.
I enjoyed seeing Brigid learn about what happened, and I really liked the characters of Fin, Ophelia, and Knightly. Some pop culture references (thanks Fin) made me laugh. And I liked the world of monsters and townspeople who continued on through the horror.
The tone was slightly detached - giving the story a mythic feel. That's not my favorite tone, but it did fit with the story.
