I'm thinking A Stranger on My Land A Stranger on My Land (Civil War Romance #1) by Sandra Merville Hart might work well for this challenge.

message 153: by Karen (new)

Karen | 1147 comments Wow! This is definitely going to be a challenge but look forward to i!

I think The Thread Collectors by Shaunna J. Edwards might work. I will be checking my local library for ideas.

Lynnette | 571 comments If anyone needs a suggestion, I read a book last month that should work for this challenge.

It's a bit hard for me to tell from the blurb if the leads are on opposite sides of the war. I'm interested in hearing what you discover about this.

Karen wrote: "I wondered about the books in that series too- especially that one and Spy of Richmond (Heroines Behind the Lines #4) by Jocelyn Green or Widow of Gettysburg (Heroines Behind the Lines, #2) by Jocelyn Green"

The Spy of Richmond sounds like the leads might both be on the Union side. If there turns out to be a POV character from the Confederacy as well, it would work.

Widow of Gettysburg will definitely work, because one lead is a Union widow and the other is a Confederate scout.

Thanks, Andrea - it wasn't clear to me either whether those would work. Once I have my library copies, I'll post what I find out.

message 162: by Katrina (new)

Katrina Lybbert | 859 comments I finished my Gothic read for March, yesterday. I ended up choosing one of the older authors, as I remember loving books by Phyllis A. Whitney. I read Seven Tears for Apollo by Phyllis A. Whitney and enjoyed the suspense.

For the month of April I had already chosen to read Drummer Boy at Bull Run (Bonnets and Bugles, #1) by Gilbert Morris for the Manpower challenge (a book by a male author) and amazingly it fits here too!

Karen | 1147 comments Congrats, Katrina! One of my Gothic reads for March is also a Phyllis A. Whitney, Silverhill by Phyllis A. Whitney .
I hope to finish it tomorrow. I also loved reading her books and will probably read several more this year. My local library has several collections of her books avalilable in Hoopla.

I found another Gilbert Morris that I think works for this month The Crossing (The Last Cavaliers #1) by Gilbert Morris

I checked and my library has Silverhill. I will try and fit it in sometime this year, as her books are enjoyable. Thanks!

message 168: by Carissa (new)

Carissa | 460 comments I think The Rebel Bride (Daughter of the Mayflower, #10) by Shannon McNear I think this one would work as she the heroine is Tennessean and Confederate while the hero is a Union Solider. I've already read it so it doesn't work for as it's not a genre I like to reread.

Andrea - here is what I learned about the two books in question:
The Thread Collectors by Shaunna J. Edwards - this one has both main characters on the same side so would not work for this genre.

Spy of Richmond (Heroines Behind the Lines #4) by Jocelyn Green - this book begins by identifying some history of Richmond and that "In fact, as late as April 12, 1861, Richmond was a Union town." This book was "inspired by first-person accounts of Union loyalists and Confederates living in Richmond during the Civil War." So the heroine is an abolitionist/Union loyalist, her suitor is a Cinfederate officer, and her father is a slaveholder. Therefore this should work just like Widow of Gettysburg.

I look forward to reading them both. I was unfamiliar with Richmond's history of Union loyalists.

I finished this just now, and think it works for the challenge. Though Carrie did not have strong ideological leanings one way or the other really, she was definitely from a Confederate family (her father is fighting for the Confederacy, and her aunt hates all Yankees). And, of course, you have Adam, who is a Union soldier.

Karen | 1147 comments Just finished my first one for this month's genre - Escape by Night: A Civil War Adventure. It was a good children's book about the young son of a Presbyterian minister in Augusta, Georgia. His father's church is being used by the Confederates as a hospital and the family supports the Confederates. He meets a Yankee soldier in the hospital.

Next up - Spy of Richmond (Heroines Behind the Lines #4) by Jocelyn Green

message 189: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 2237 comments With This Pledge (Carnton, #1) by Tamera Alexander - I finished this one - not sure if it fits 100%, Lizzie worked for a southern family on the confederacy side and nursed soldiers, though she did not believe in the slavery etc - clear in her action by teaching slaves to read - main male is Captain on Confederacy army

If this won't fit, will see if I get another book read otherwise just going to skip this genre

May's genre is Victorian.

Examples:
God’s Handmaiden by Gilbert Morris The Dressmaker's Secret (The Chronicles of Alice and Ivy, #1) by Kellyn Roth A Midnight Dance by Joanna Davidson Politano Lost Melody by Davidson Politano

Karen wrote: "Andrea - could you please help me understand the difference between Victorian and Regency."

Sure thing, Karen.

From Wikipedia:
"In the history of the United Kingdom and the British Empire, the Victorian era was the period of Queen Victoria's reign, from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901."

And:
"The Regency era of British history is commonly applied to the years between c.1795 and 1837, although the official regency for which it is named only spanned the years 1811 to 1820."

So Regency books are usually set between 1811 and 1820, in England, while Victorian books are generally set between 1837 and 1901, during Queen Victoria's reign, also in England.
