Why 42?

A lot of people have asked why Adams chose 42 as the meaning of life. What are your thoughts?

The programmmer perspective of this has always been my personal accepted canon.
42 is the ASCII code for an Asterisk *, which in a lot of Search functions on websites of within coding serves as a catch all for any character that might fit in this space. Making the meaning of life "Anything"

M.K. Aleja I like this answer, too. I find it strange that most of the folks I know who recognize references to this series, like me, are all in IT. I also think ...more

I think the random and simple answer is the truth. What is the meaning of life? It is nothing or whatever you want it to be.

Douglas Adams himself said that he came up with it randomly as he was looking out through his window

42 is an extremely random answer.
The same goes to life and universe, which are as absurd and random as this answer.

The fact that we are still asking this question long after the book was first published shows that 42 is the perfect answer.

42 is the ALMOST perfect answer - 99%. 43 is perfect.

nice

In "Alice in Wonderland" the Number "42" appears a multitude of times. Coincidence, I THINK NOT!

Well, it's very much like the double-slit experiment (Douglas was light years ahead of even this discovery) - The moment you observe the phenomenon it winks and fools you into the impossibility and absurdity of the effect the observer has on the experiment. And that's what 42 is all about. The more you try to find out about 42 the less you can discover because the more possibilities open up. You have to sort of squint at the meaning of life out of the corner of your eye so as not to upset it. If you were ever able to look directly at the meaning of 42 you probably would have to do it from a place of non-existence in any terms that we might thin about it.
I suspect that 42 chose DA rather than the other way round for that's the way of these things. As has been said, carry a towel.

In Douglas Adams' books, 42 is not the meaning of life. Instead, it went like this:
An alien civilisation has built a supercomputer called "Deep Thought" and asked it, what the answer to the ultimate question about life, the universe and everything was. After 7.5 million years of computing, it finally replied "forty-two", and that it was definitely the correct answer. The alien civilisation was quite dissatisfied with the answer, but couldn't help but admit that the question had never been posed in an accurate manner. Deep Thought didn't have enough computing power to provide the question to them though, so it suggested that they should construct another, even greater supercomputer for that purpose.

42 backwards is 24 half of 24 is 12, Hitchhiker's was made into a film and a film beginning with 12 is 12 Angry Men, Henry Fonda starred in 12 Angry Men, Fonda sounds like fondant which is a icing you can put on cakes, grandmas bake cakes, but grandmas are wrinkly, so are raisins, raisins are dehydrated grapes, Henry Fonda was also in the Grapes of Wrath, so, therefore, the answer to life, the universe and everything is wrath. Woah, Douglas Adams, so poetic.
