Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments What books have you acquired lately? Have you bought a good looking book at the shop? Had a massive splurge online? Had some gifts or some good snaffles from little libraries?

If you have had some books come into your possession recently, please tell us all about them here.

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments It suddenly strikes me that I haven't bought any books yet! Time for a change as I need some for buddy reads.

Janice (jamasc) | 59335 comments I bought my first book of 2024 - No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality on Kindle. I had slotted it as the illness task on Nala's World Hike, only to discover it's not long enough. It's 231 pages Kindle. Back to the drawing board.

Saar The Book owl | 2616 comments @Jackie: I've got Total Cat Mojo: The Ultimate Guide to Life with Your Cat too, but haven't read it yet. I've read all the other books of Jackson Galaxy and I'm a huge fan of 'My cat from hell'. I'm curious what you'll find of the book.

message 10: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11523 comments I really enjoy Rainbow Rowell writing. Got to get back to the Simon Snow Series.

message 11: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 10, 2024 06:24AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments I appreciated Eleanor & Park but didn't love it. I read a book of her short stories in 2023. I didn't like 50% of the stories, didn't mind another 40% and absolutely loved the Simon Snow story. I wanted the whole book to be about them, and then found out there were whole books!

I also found this book before delayed Christmas when i went to find more soy sauce, and though it was the best day ever. Then we got uninvited to Christmas... so swings and roundabouts!

Janice (jamasc) | 59335 comments I'd be interested in the Princes in the Tower. Will we ever really know?

message 13: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11149 comments I liked ANXIOUS PEOPLE, Rusalka. It is the kind of book that lifts your spirits. Take it into account for when you need that. :)

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18887 comments You really find some great books in those little libraries, Rus!

message 15: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59335 comments The little library a couple of streets over, and the one next to my dad's house primarily have children picture books.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments Janice wrote: "I'd be interested in the Princes in the Tower. Will we ever really know?"

I feel like, particularly as the royal family for the past 700 years haven't really needed to protect the Yorks (being the victors and the ones on the throne), if we haven't found a paper trail by now, I don't think we will. Who knows though, I have a book to read.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments Kristie wrote: "You really find some great books in those little libraries, Rus!"

I am very lucky. I was looking at the Canberra Little Library facebook page today, and realised how good the calibre of our libraries are. It's not good for my shelves.

message 19: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments I also realised I forgot two as they were on another shelf.
Red Rising
The Eighth Life: for Brilka

message 20: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11523 comments Picked up the daily deal from audible UK, Penance

message 21: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18887 comments I have a little library in my neighborhood, but it doesn't usually have much of interest in it. Last time I visited there were a bunch of little bugs in it, so I didn't trust any of the books to bring home and have avoided it since.

I know of three other little libraries, but I'm not usually close by them. I'd have to make a special trip and they don't usually have much that I'm interested in either.

I've occasionally come across a good find in one, so I do always check them out when I see them.

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18547 comments I went into Bath to occupy myself amd spent an hour in Waterstones looking at books, board games and grabbing some lunch. At the till, i noticed i could get free coffee if i bought one of the books of the month so i bought In the Blink of An Eye.

Sarah | 18547 comments I also added a few books to my wishlist.

How Not to Age: The Scientific Approach to Getting Healthier as You Get Older
Address Unknown
The Bears of Brooks Falls: Wildlife and Survival on Alaska's Brooks River
Becoming Ted

Arthur and Teddy Are Coming Out

And then I felt guilty for not supporting my little local independent bookstore: Read Books, so I preordered from them:
How We Named the Stars
Float Up, Sing Down
Neighbors and Other Stories
Wandering Stars
James

It was fun explaining my thought process to Henry... I am set for 2024 😄

The Word is Murder
One Step Too Far
A Secret in the Keys

I also used a credit to get an audio copy of Rules of Civility. I own a physical copy, but it seems like the kind of book where having both may be helpful to me.

message 35: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19188 comments It's actually the major factor to go to the bookfair tomorrow! I feel I really need to buy a bag or two of books I love to replenish what I find in them over the 6 months! I am super spoilt with them all, and more pop up all the time.
