Do you remember where you were on April 2, 2005, the day John Paul II died?

Do you remember where you were on April 19, 2005, the day Benedict XVI was chosen as the Pope of the Catholic Church?

Do you remember anything about those two happenings?

In both occasions, I was at home. The day of John Paul's death was not a surprise, as he had been dying slowly for many days.

I remember, the day Benedict XVI was elected, I was watching the Spanish national TV network, where they had assembled a group of "famous" people from the media, and when the name of the new Pope was given at the Vatican, all those present howled in unison, overwhelmed by the person who had been elected. At that time, the Socialist party held the power in Spain, and the national TV was a faithful servant of that party.

In fact, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's election was not a surprise for me, as I had followed the Catholic press information, in the days previous to the Conclave, about how Ratzinger had been made responsible of the homily to all the Cardinals, and had spoken forcibly about the need to fight relativism. I thought it was highly probably that he'd be elected Pope.

Fonch | 2266 comments There is a novel "The death of a Pope" written by Piers Paul Read about this conclave. In this period i dreamt with the election of asian cardinal to spread the catholicism in Asia. In this period i was young and fool i did not receive well the election of Benedict XVI during the period In which he was Pope my only pity was that he resigned. He is not my favorite Pope that is John Paul II but at finally i become Ratzingerian :-) 😀.

Frances Richardson | 139 comments At the conclusion of Episode One of his outstanding TV series “Catholicism,’ Bishop Robert Barron points to the just-elected Pope Benedict as he walks out to greet the crowds in the square below and inevitably sees the crumbling walls of the Roman coliseum across from him. All the greatness of Ancient Rome has passed away, and yet the Catholic Church, embodied in a singular way in this gentle, white-haired man, endures. Of course Benedict had to have thought this. Everyone must have.

I remember watching the funeral Mass for Pope John Paul II, watching the pages of the bible sitting on his casket flip slowly in the breeze, listening to Cardinal Ratzinger's homily and thinking "Lord, please make this man your Pope."

S. Pierzchala | 6 comments Beautiful! I remember being with a large group of friends, watching the announcement that Ratzinger had been elected. It was wonderful to see the young folks squealing with excitement, like he was a rock star!
