In both occasions, I was at home. The day of John Paul's death was not a surprise, as he had been dying slowly for many days.
I remember, the day Benedict XVI was elected, I was watching the Spanish national TV network, where they had assembled a group of "famous" people from the media, and when the name of the new Pope was given at the Vatican, all those present howled in unison, overwhelmed by the person who had been elected. At that time, the Socialist party held the power in Spain, and the national TV was a faithful servant of that party.
In fact, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's election was not a surprise for me, as I had followed the Catholic press information, in the days previous to the Conclave, about how Ratzinger had been made responsible of the homily to all the Cardinals, and had spoken forcibly about the need to fight relativism. I thought it was highly probably that he'd be elected Pope.

I remember watching the funeral Mass for Pope John Paul II, watching the pages of the bible sitting on his casket flip slowly in the breeze, listening to Cardinal Ratzinger's homily and thinking "Lord, please make this man your Pope."

Do you remember where you were on April 19, 2005, the day Benedict XVI was chosen as the Pope of the Catholic Church?
Do you remember anything about those two happenings?
