I started a new topic as the original was started in 2017 and was quite long! Welcome to 2024. What are your goals for 2024?

My goals are to ...read more, hit 300 on the list, complete both TBR and Monthly Word Challenges and at least two quarterly reads.

message 3: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I really hope I can manage the annual read, two quarterly reads,(I have read the other two) all the BOTM and the new challenge. If I do I will be well past 700 1001 books.

message 4: by Jane (new)

Jane | 310 comments Those numbers are amazing Diane and Pip!

Last year inadvertently became the year of the BIG book: Clarissa, Swarm, and Mysteries of Udolpho, among others. According to GR, I read 17,898 pages across 44 books.

SO... I am sticking to shorter books this year. My goals are 3 of the quarterly reads (although I may re-read Corrections), 1 BOM, 1 keyword challenge per month, 1 TBR per month. I am also hoping to do at least 1 randomizer.

message 5: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1664 comments My goal is to finish all of the books that have ever appeared on the English edition this year (preferably by the end of August/September ish since that will mark exactly 10 years since intentionally starting the list). I've got 76 left right now, so hopefully I can get a hold of and finish translating some of the trickier books this year.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5015 comments Mod
I don't particularly have any concrete goals. I read something like 38 books in the 1001 and it would be nice to continue. I'm 70 now and I have only half the list (combined) read so there's that. I am so afraid I won't get our annual read. That book is big. If it was on Kindle, I could probably do better. Audible would be even better. I would like to read the annual, keep up with the TBR list as I do have a source for those. Read botm. I would like to read some of my randomizer list but I think I've already 2 of them and will need to check on whether I can find the other 2. Anyway, my goal would be to read 1 more 1001 book than I read last year.

message 7: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2100 comments I am aiming for 600 on the list in 2024. I will do the annual read, some BOTM, all the TBR. I had a good year of Random Challenge last year, reading 15 books. I am going to try for that again also.

Oh, speaking of which, I was able to find a pdf here:

If anyone else either can't get it in their area, or would find the book to cumbersome, this link works. You can read it directly on the site or download it, which I did.

I am 9 books away from reaching the halfway point of the extended List (1318 books, so 659 is 50%). As I have to read the annual read and the four quarterlies, I don't think I will be able to read more than 40 books this year. It would include at least the 12 TBR picks, January's BOTMs and whatever unread BOTM I'm able to get my hands on. I had hopes for some randomized picks, but I have already read the 4 that were picked. I'm still working on reducing the size of my TBR shelves, which still has 75+ books on it (both in English and in French).

message 11: by Rosemary (last edited Jan 15, 2024 12:57PM) (new)

Rosemary | 664 comments I hope to read an average of 3 books a month, doing the TBR Takedown, the Keyword challenge, the annual read, two quarterlies, and whatever BOTM I haven't read before. That would take me to 790. It would be nice to hit 800, but I won't stress about that.

Wow Rosemary I am impressed with 790! You are almost done.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

My aim is to keep up with the BOTMs, Quarterly and Annual read I did plan to attempt the key word challenge but my January book has yet to arrive from the library eeek.

On top of that I want to clear my Netgalley shelf and keep up with the read around the world challenge on thereadersroom blog.

My GR aim is 120 books so 10 a month.

Pip | 1822 comments Wow! Book, that is ambitious.

Amanda Dawn | 1664 comments I was wondering if anyone has good recs for ereader/computer programs that can auto-scroll/turn pages? (So far doing open library's read along feature on mute which works well but scrolls a lot slower than I read).

I have ME/CFS that got worse over the last month and half until I had a stroke-like flareup last week. It is either really painful, or impossible when having spastic episodes, to use my hands.

Hi Amanda, sorry to hear about your flare-up. Do you have an occupational therapist? I would reach out as they may have suggestions. Sounds like audiobooks would work best when you can get them. Wishing all the best:)

message 19: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1664 comments Thanks for the supportive words everyone. If I do find any programs I'll post them here in case they are useful to others.

I usually do half audio half reading each month, but also have intermittent audio/visual intolerance(I've been dog-piled with anti reading symptoms lol)

Think I just have to accept that its okay not hit 10 books a month and chill with listening/reading less

so sorry to hear you are suffering Amanda hope the flare passes soon.

I wasn't even aware you could get readers that automatically turn the page so thanks for bringing that to my attention I am sure it will be useful to us all at some point.

I agree with you accept it is OK to just read at your pace and take you time with what you can do.

Hi all, Just to let you know that due to changes in my life in the real world I will be leaving social media for the foreseeable future and that includes GR.

I have loved being part of this group and will miss you all.

Kristel & Diane sorry to leave you in the lurch I hope you can find another moderator to step in and help.

Rosemary I will send you the book as soon as I can I have a few library books to complete first and then this will be my next target.

To reassure you all I am fine in myself and I don't want you to worry about me. After 10 great years on GR I need to devote more time to the real world and I didn't want to disappear without a word.

Rest assured I will still be spending my free time reading.

Reading 1001 is looking for a new facilitator to replace Book who has needed to take a break. She will be greatly missed. Since we are an international group we are looking for an administrator who is not living in North America. Please private message me with your interest if you would like to be considered.

Hello everyone, I am glad to announce that Patrick has agreed to be our newest facilitator and he will take on the tasks of overseeing the Randomizer list and keeping track of annual points earned and used. Welcome Patrick!

A lot of these reviews are old reviews (pre-2016) that I had not yet added to the bulk of our reviews. While I was doing some survey work on the index, I thought I should (finally) add these reviews to our common trove. Expect another ~100 of these to come.

The Swarm, a 1001 book is an audible daily deal today.

message 43: by Pip (new)

Pip | 1822 comments I struggled with my reading in September. I used to regularly read Arnold Bennett's How to Live on 24 Hours a Day for inspiration, but I didn't enjoy The Old Wives' Tale, although I thought the topic was of interest. Similarly, I have hardly made a dent in Joseph, although I have loved all the other Thomas Mann books I have read. When The Last Temptation of Christ was my TBR this month I began suffering from Biblical Overload. Three unfinished books! I have decided it is time to move away from Reading 1001 for awhile. It has fulfilled my purpose in becoming better read and I have enjoyed reading, for example, Kidnapped, which I probably would not have read otherwise. But I am goimg to finish The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida, and Richard Osman's latest and go out and buy the new Sally Rooney and Alan Hollinghurst without feeling guilty! Thanks to all of you for making my reading so interesting, I shall probably peek in from the sidelines to see what you are all reading!

Oh, Pip, I totally understand but I am going to miss your presence and your insights. I invite you to drop in to LibraryThing and check out the 75ers. I think you might find reading with this international group a pleasure. I have gotten no where with Joseph myself. It has been hard when there are not enough audiobooks to give me time to read the books that arn't in audios. Please do keep checking in here.

I fully understand, having been stuck with the same feeling quite a few times; hence, the reason why I left the group for about 18 months a few years back. That break actually gave me a boost in my reading, even on List books (that's when I also went through the Taebaek Mountains, 3500 pages!). I got to say that Joseph and his Brothers is such a motivation killer! I have less than 200 pages to go and I am dreading the moment where I will go back to it (probably by the end of this month, but Grischa appears so far to be another tough, motivation-sapping read...). Have fun in your other reading adventures, from your neighbour across the ditch!

I don't know if you've noticed but GR is no longer notifying us of posts, etc. I guess the notification about what Reading 1001 will be reading is also gone. This change is going to make it even harder to keep discussions going.
