I thought I'd start a thread for general comments.

So first of all.... DJ, you promised to tell us about that Grand Book Adventure!

Let's see...

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments Great demo -- I have been trying to do that in the other group myself. Thanks Lauren for telling us that.

If Gabriele doesn't mind, you can also post them in the group photo gallery, which is pretty easy, but you can't add captions in there I don't think.

message 6: by SarahC (new)

SarahC (sarahcarmack) | 220 comments Sorry, I was wrong, you can do captions in the photo gallery.

Great idea, Sarah, for relevant photos of the era. And I love the fashions, Lauren.

message 8: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 09, 2010 12:48PM) (new)

I finished The Forsyte Saga (adaptation, not book) this morning - at last! Awful weather proved the perfect excuse to be lazy. I really enjoyed it and was surprised that it was by ITV, as they don't have a great track record with period pieces. Great though. I think the actors did a fantastic job and the drama sustained itself.

The only thing that annoyed me was Jolyon and Irene's stance against Fleur and Jon marrying. It seemed thorouhly selfish especially as Jon went off to America anyway.

message 9: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Hi Lauren,I have to say that I agree with your comment above, yes ok Fleur was a bit selfish but she was the only child of doting parents,Jon had been equally cossetted and over wrapped in cotton wool by his parents but I also believe that Flour would have regretted marrying him eventually as I found him to be very weak.In this instance I think Soames proved to b the better man as he was willing to call truce and try to make an effort towards his daughters happiness....
And yes I am remembering how immature and selfish that Soames had been earlier in life but aren't you supposed to put your children before yourself?Something hat Jolyon and Irene would have done well to remember!
Er sorry if I've been spouting off on my high horse....

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Jon was weak, I agree. I liked him as a character but he seemed to have a lot of maturing to do. As of course did Fleur. When he left her crying out for him (was there rain too? Maybe I'm imagining that for the sake of melodrama) I went off him. After all, she had had sex with him, so was 'tainted' I suppose, and then deserted. In many ways I prefered the one she ended up marrying - he had a sense of humour and seemed to know his own mind.

Strange how nobody seemed to age in about fifty years!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Nice to see you again DJ!

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

I completely forgot! What was this news you couldn't wait to tell us, DJ?

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Lauren, I've already asked her once but she's keeping mum!

message 14: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) OOOthink it might be all my New Years News.....
I`ll write it all down at the weekend as I need to go and make the dinner shortly.....
Many apologies but Christmas did not leave much spare time and I need to go and catch upon the VILE BODIES DISCUSSION!!!

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

DJ, this better be good! :D

message 16: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) It should be and I have just realised that I never posted my Book Adventure...grovelling apologies to all!!

message 17: by Paula (new)

Paula There was a Forsyte discussion that I missed? Bummer! I, too, just finished it recently, after starting/stopping it for almost a year. A cold spell in Wisconsin meant staying inside more often, so I had a similar reason for finishing it as did Lauren.

I was ok with the parents not wanting Jon/Fleur to marry. Fleur seemed too artificial, too shallow, and seemed to have a feeling of entitlement, like she wanted Jon just because there was something forbidden about their relationship.

I give credit to the parents for sticking up to the idea, and for being open (ultimately) about their past in a way that helped him understand why they disapproved.

Imagine Irene having to have Soames in her life forever, when the mere site of him repulsed her. Then, knowing that if she died, her son wouldn't have any parents left alive and would potentially have to be around Soames very often. Her son has been .. how as it put?... "over-wrapped in cotton wool" but grew up very quickly at the end, and seemed to make his own decision, which perhaps is why I was ultimately ok with what the parents did.

For the past three days I haven't been receiving any emails from ŷ except for the daily update of groups. Has anyone else been having this problem? I reported it and was told to talk to my ISP, but if some of the mail is coming through, I can't imagine that they're blocking the rest.

message 19: by Paula (new)

Paula I've been having the same issue, Gabriele, for all the groups that I get updates from. I thought it was because I hadn't gone into the posts to get a new email, so went into all the posts for one group, and it still didn't work.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

You can have some of my emails! I'm not having this problem -- sorry I can't help. Did you look in your junk mail folder or your GR profile preferences? Or at the bottom of a post box, where you need to check "Email me"? Maybe they got reset?

message 21: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
This is what I received from ŷ, Paula:
That's because an email we sent you bounced back 6 days ago. To verify
your email address, select “my account from the “Hi [your name:]
drop-down list in the top right corner of ŷ. The right side
of the screen will be "my account settings." You will see the option
to verify your email there. Also make sure to add
[email protected] to your contacts to help ensure
deliverability.

message 22: by Paula (new)

Paula Sounds like a nice, standard response... but did it fix the issue for you? Mine is that I was only getting some - or others would arrive much later than normal. I checked all my settings, but have gotten into the habit of just checking GR directly as opposed to my email. I'm sure on here enough as it is :)

message 23: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Yes, verifying my email did fix the problem, Paula. I find it easier to keep track of discussions if emails come to my inbox, rather than trying to remember what threads to check on GR.

Woohoo, hubby bought me a Kindle yesterday!!! They've only been available to Canadians for a couple of months. Anyway, I'm looking forward especially to finding research texts for it, since I'll be able to do searches on key words. And I'll take it with me on our winter getaway long weekend (and business trip for me, as I will spend some time in a museum). Man, I can see this is going to be dangerous!

message 26: by Paula (new)

Paula Yay for your new Kindle!!! Good husband - he's a keeper if he encourages all the reading! :) And yes, they can be quite dangerous!

I think I may have to wrestle him for it, though, Paula. He's the one who's been really keen to get one, so it's a sort-of joint Valentine's present.

message 28: by Paula (new)

Paula That's even better, actually. Just tell him it's work-related for you so you can't share as much :)

message 29: by Gabriele (new)

Gabriele Wills (muskoka) | 526 comments Mod
Heehee! Yup, and he is a keeper! : )

message 30: by Paula (new)

Paula I should elaborate a bit - I think it's even better because you married a guy who seems to love reading as well. :)

He's usually so bogged down with technical stuff that he doesn't often get to read for pleasure anymore. But what can you say about a guy who was willing to remortgage the house so that we could publish my books? My champion!

Kathryn | 14 comments Lee and Jeannette, I'm just now realizing you are in this club. HI!!!! ;-) I discovered it only recently but I'm a huge fan of this time period and I read "I Capture the Castle" last summer so I will try to participate in the discussions as time permits. This seems like a great group of people and awesome books!

message 37: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 14 comments By the way, Gabriele, I enjoyed your humorous post and your cats are adorable! A bonus is that now your Muskoka Boathouses post is up--I LOVE LM Montgomery's book "The Blue Castle" which is set there :-)

After a while I get confused just where I have met someone, too. And a few of you (Kathryn, included) change profile pictures to make it more confusing! :)

Haha, true! For the first two years I was on GR, I never changed my profile picture but I guess I just got a bit bored--or, rather, too excited about changing things up ;-)

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

I liked the original, with the long blond hair, but I like this one, too!

message 41: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 14 comments Thanks! I'm impressed you remembered the other one :-) I'm a huge fan of holidays so I thought I'd change mine seasonally this year.

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

My daughter does that with her laptop background. She does the countdown to Christmas every year. And today she's got Valentine's theme. :)

Brilliant news!

Okay, 1912 isn't "between the wars" but I thought people here might be interested.

Julian Fellowes wrote Gosford Park so I have high hopes.

Interesting. Like Upstairs Downstairs revisited. (Which I see is going to have a Season Six, after all these years, set in 1936.)
