The audio version of Ender's Game was great! I listened to the 20th Anniversary Edition (I think the chief narrator was Stefan Rudnicki?), and the different voices really made it entertaining. At the end of the book there is also a reading of an interview with the author about the origins of the story and his inspiration.

Mary E. (jujjy) | 125 comments Rossy wrote: "Wow Mary! *bows down* That was fast my friend.LOL ..."

I haven't even started my recs for Feb yet. I suppose I should have clarified that I read Ender's Game back in November'09, I was just so impressed with the audio that I feel the need to chime in whenever someone mentions they plan to read it LOL. ;)

message 265: by Kasia (new)

Kasia I agree about the Ender's Game, it's a sci-fi book that non sci-fi people enjoy as well. Quite a page turner. I imagine the audio version was great as well ;-)

message 266: by Kasia (new)

Kasia ok, Harper, your tastes seem to run similarly to mine (Sunshine, Deerskin, Pride and Prejudice and Harry Potter are on my fav list as well), yet we don't have that many books in common, which makes it fun to make a recommendation for you. So here it is:

1) Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause

I hear there's a Blood and Chocolate movie, which is really crappy and has little to do with the book. So if you've seen the movie (I haven't), please don't take it against the book. What Annette Curtis Klause reads easy since it's on the ya side, and has great psychology woven into it. And some action of course, and romace.

2) Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger Soulless by Gail Carriger.

This one is new, shiny, fun and totally differet. It's a book that's got it all. It's humorous, freah, there's a handsome hunk, weres, vamps plus the whole steampunk thing. Really worth checking out.

3) Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost

This book kicks ass, and is pretty steamy while at it. To the point of being naughty. You'd eat it up, I'm sure.

Actually, I ate up all 3 of those books. I hope at least one of them would strike your fancy. If I'm totally off, let me know, I'll try to think of something else.

I wish! I haven't even finished one book for Feb yet (and I usually average one every two days). I keep see-sawing back and forth between two books right now. I started Poltergeist but I couldn't stay focused on it because I knew I had Death's Mistress waiting for me LOL! Plus I'm listening to The Hunger Games... I usually limit my audiobook time to back/forth work commutes, but this one is so engrossing I've been sneaking my iPod into bed with me at night (effectively cutting into my reading time). *sigh* Sometimes I just wish I could quit my job and read full-time! :)

Thanks for the recs! I'm going to choose "Soulless." I was actually kind of curious about this book - I'd even checked it out at the store recently - but I wasn't 100% sure about it, so I never bought it. I'll use this challenge as an excuse to read it!

BTW, I have seen the "Blood and Chocolate" movie and I didn't like it much. I'll have to check out that book, too, eventually. I know not to judge a book by its movie. :)

Thanks for volunteering to recommend something for me, Annie! All of them look like wonderful picks and are going on my TBR list. The Paid Companion is the one I can get the quickest so I am going with it for this challenge. I will read the others at some point too. Thanks again!

Happy to help! That book is very likeable.

Harper wrote: "BTW, I have seen the "Blood and Chocolate" movie and I didn't like it much."

That's what I keep hearing, and that's why peeps get weary of the book, but the bad rep is undeserved. If you ever stumble upon it, I do recommend it, but of course no pressure.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Corrupt, Lead Me On is her newest. It is actually #3 in the series and I haven't read it yet. I would actually read #1 first if you can as they sort of solve a mystery in each one and I'd hate for that to be ruined for you should you decide you like them and want to read them all.

*edit* I also haven't read that one yet. I saw it yesterday but was able to resist. I'm sure I'll succumb this week though.

Hi Corrupt and Photojim,

FYI- I just read Lead Me On last week and it stands alone pretty well. There is no reference to the mystery that is solved in the first two books so it would not ruin anything as far as that goes. Really the only reference to the previous books is just some interactions with the previous couples near the end so you know that they are still together and happy :) In my humble opinion Talk Me Down was the weakest of the series. I like Start Me Up and Lead Me On both much better and I think Lead Me On was the strongest. The whole series was very enjoyable. Happy reading Corrupt! I will look forward to seeing what you think!

Pollyanna (polly8) | 300 comments Karina:

Hey I thought I'd recommend some books for you, I notice you are a chick lit fan and so you have to read Marian Keyes lol I would class her as one of the best chick lit writers :)

Angels: A Novel by Marian Keyes - this was the first one I read and couldn't put it down.

The Other Woman's Shoes by Adele Parks - another great chick lit author.

I also noticed you have quite a few classics on your tbr list and one of my favourite classic authors is Thomas Hardy, I think you might like him.

Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy

I'd agree that Start Me Up is better only because I thought Lori Love was da'Bomb! I loves me a sassy heroine. (sorry about the lack of English skillz, you watch one bad episode of Fresh Prince and it just sticks with you for days) But seriously, I read some reviews this morning and will definitely be reading this by this weekend.

Thanks I'm hoping to read the Marian Keyes novel next week, cause I'm reading the Color Purple now, but thank you so much for your recommendation.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) | 5294 comments Julie, I just finished Heart-Shaped Box. A new version of horror. Not quite like horror when I was young. I'm sure it would make a decent movie. One of those creepy movies with some jump moments and a big showdown where the absolute implausible finishes the bad guy. I'm just not sure it was a great book. Nothing wrong with it really, just not great. Liked the radio trick though. All in all a 3 star read. Wasn't actually scared at any point to call it real Horror. But I did like it.

Karina, you're going to end up loving Marian Keyes. She's an auto-buy for me.
The book Polyanna is part of a series actually about the Walsh sisters. While you don't have to read it in order, unless you're OCD like me, here is the sequence:

1. Watermelon
2. Rachel's Holiday
3. Angels: A Novel
4. Anybody Out There?

While they were all VERY good, Anybody Out There? was truly fantastic. If you get a chance, i recommend you read that one as well.

~Sara~ | 667 comments Tosca,
I finished reading Strange Brew and I enjoyed it for the most part. The beginning stories were much better then the end ones.
I really liked: Seeing Eye, by Patricia Briggs, Death Warmed Over, by Rachel Caine, and Vegas Odds, by Karen Chance. The first and last had werewolf heroes, which I apparently like, and the middle story, though kind-of creepy, had an interesting love story.
I didn't really like the last two: Ginger, by Caitlin Kittredge had an obnoxious heroine and Dark Sins by Jenna Maclaine had a horrible ending.
Overall I gave it 4/5 and will check out other stories by a few of the authors, so thank you for the recommendation!
My Review

Ari (moochew12) | 159 comments Hi Valerie!
I checked out both The Summoning and the Endearment from the library. I just finished the Summoning and it was very interesting! I am immediately going to order the next book in the series. I loved the suspense and sort of the irony of her Aunt. It's almost a bit scary too. Usually, I tell myself I am not a huge sci-fi fantasy reader, but books like these are far from Harry Potter fantasy. So thank you for the recommendation!!
