Frequently Asked Questions

Further to the abbreviations (and I'm sure you might roll your eyes! LOL) but what is IMO? I think I worked it out once, but I've forgotten again. And I have asked my friends/nieces a hundred times, but what is BFF again? Something about a best friend but I keep forgetting the second F!!
All these listed abbreviations in the thread have really helped me. :)

There are plenty of other stuff going on here that you might find interesting even if you are not into challenges. : )
IMO - In my opinion
IMHO - In my humble opinion
BFF - Best Friends Forever
Hope that helps.

As Dee had answered, just go back to the original thread, and post it there.

I think I have also opened my profile from private to public...??

list of all challenges:
Random list 2
read author Tess Gerritson
Back to School
read the month for october and november
read your life
I think that's all of them.

That is a continuing thread.
Just wanted to get this straight. In the challenges, when I list my books, do I put the start and end date on every title?

Just the end date.
It is assumed that you started the book within the challenge duration.

After hosting the PIFM challenge and keeping an eye on the questions asked this month (wonderfully hosted by Debbie) I've summarised the main questions asked into a challenge specific FAQ. Which I'll post in the message below :)
PICK IT FOR ME CHALLENGE - Frequently Asked Questions
How many books do I have to read?
You’ll be given a selection of books to choose from but you only have to read ONE to complete the challenge. Some people like to complete more, and you may be asked to do buddy reads but you only have to complete one book to complete the challenge.
What if I don’t like the books I’ve been given?
The heart of this challenge is to try a book that you may not have tried on your own accord it’s what makes it fun! And even if you try something and don’t like it well then you can always give it a low rating (which will actually help the next time you do a PIFM challenge). However, if you’re really struggling you can ask the person to re-pick for you.
The other thing to do is to check out the reviews of the book on goodreads before you discount it you may not like PNR for example but the reviews for the book may be filled with people who say “you know I’ve never liked PNR before this book....
What’s a Buddy Read?
A buddy read is where you and the person who picked for you/or you picked for read the same book at the same time. Usually you’ll correspond through private messages while reading and discuss the book. A buddy read is a specific category in the rules and usually works best if it's a book that you and your pickee both have on your TBR shelves (although that doesn't have to be the case and may not be this month due to the rules). If they pick it try your best to read it as well as the book you select from the list picked for you. If you absolutely know that you can’t read more than one book this month, let the person you’re picking for know when you make the picks.
I don’t have a very big to-read list is that a problem?
No, we have some members who don’t have to-read lists at all. The only thing is that it may mean that your book picker may select books from their read pile to fit the rules if there’s nothing suitable in your to-read list.
I don’t see any rules posted where are they?
Most of the time the book selection rules won’t be posted until the assignments are made. Again - It’s part of the fun of the challenge! Rarely, rules will be posted early. This is normally when the host thinks people will need more time than normal to find picks.
How do I know what the person I’m picking for likes to read?
Simple look at their read shelves. What books do they rate highly and what books do they only give one star to? Is there a pattern there? Are all their 5 star books PNR or a particular author? Are there a heap of historicals in their shelves but they’re never rated higher than a 3?
Check out their profile and read some of their reviews, you’ll be surprised at what you find out...
I’m having trouble finding picks for the categories where should I go?
Try some of the following links:
http://www.goodreads.com/shelf
http://www.goodreads.com/places
http://www.goodreads.com/list
And check out previous challenges or lists in this group. Plus there’s always google....
How do I make my posts look good and add the book links etc?
At the top of the comments box there’s a link that says “some html is okay click on that and it will show you how to use bold, underline etc.
To insert a book link or cover click the link “add book/author (again just above the comments box), search on the book you’re looking for and select whether you want to add the link or the cover (down the bottom of the search page).

So it would look like:

Feb - Rapture in Death
Mar - Ceremony in Death
Apr - Vengeance in Death
May - Holiday in Death
Jun - Conspiracy in Death
Jul - Loyalty in Death
Aug - Witness in Death
Sep - Judgment in Death
Oct - Betrayal in Death
Nov - Seduction in Death
Dec - Reunion in Death
Should we start a thread in the 'Dare you to Read' folder, or would it be better placed in a one of the challenge folders? Thanks.

That should go under the Dare You to Read folder. It's going to be similar to the A Year with Georgette Heyer. The Dare You to Read folder is geared more toward book discussions rather than just listing the books you read for the challenge, so it would be the appropriate folder.

As for the January challenge - is a book with dragons in it okay (#2 of ice and fire series by George R. R. Martin

Books that can be counted for a challenge must be started and finished within the challenge duration. So, if the challenge you are participating officially started January 1, so only books that you started reading on the 1st or after can be used for that challenge.
Hope that helps.

Hi Nicola, I haven't read the second book yet but I think they have dragons - so you should be able to use them for the dragons category. Btw, there's a suggestion thread for the challenge. If you have any questions you can post there. :)

I predread many of the books my children and students read. Can I use a children's book as part of my challenge? (I am really stuck for a dragon book)
Sorry if that has already been answered. I looked but could not see anything, but recall something similar when browsing a while ago.
Thanks

Books that I can count towards BOOKS I READ FOR A CHALLENGE CHALLENGE- do they have to be books that I specifically chose so that they would help me complete a challenge, or any book that I count towards a challenge?
Thanks

Hmm...not exactly sure what is the difference between the two type of books that you mentioned.
Anyway, any book that you read for any reading challenge can be added to your list of BOOKS I READ FOR A CHALLENGE Challenge.
Does that make sense?

If I choose to participate in the read your name challenge, do I have to list my books in advance?>
Nicola

For the Read-Your-Name Challenge, you don't have to list you books in advance. You may simply post as you go.
No worries. Questions are always welcome. Good luck with your challenges. : )

Hey Rishika - not sure what you mean by this question. Could you please rephrase the query?

Actually, the 'currently reading' shelf is open to anyone who wants to share with the group what she is reading at the moment.
It is that person's responsibility to transfer it to 'read' when she finished.

Yep...but i think some people put up books that they are currently reading...that have been read by others...that's why there is already a 'finished date'.
I don't sweat about it. I just let it be.
The only time I moved a book (that was put up there by a somebody else - not me) from the 'currently reading' shelf to 'read', is that if it has been there for a long time...like say, a month.
However, so far, I see them disappear after two weeks or three...so I let it go.
I usually put mine up too...and I know D.G. shares hers too. I'm not sure who else are using the 'currently reading' shelf.
