Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments 30.4 - Cheryl TX's Task - The Science Of Crime
For this task you will need to read two medical or forensic thrillers/mysteries...one by a male author (EXAMPLE: No Certain Rest: A Novel) AND one by a female author (EXAMPLE: Harvest).

If you need suggestions OR have suggestions for books to read for this task post them here.

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments I think I'll read Darkly Dreaming Dexter for the male author.

Would Tethered: A Novel work for the female author?

In the Woods by Tana French would work for the female author too.

message 4: by Liz (last edited May 21, 2010 12:33PM) (new)

Liz Could I use Mistress of the Art of Death for the female author?

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments Would this work for a male author?
An Instance of the Fingerpost: A Novel

Another woman author I'd recommend for this task is Gillian Flynn -
Dark Places

message 6: by Liz (last edited May 21, 2010 12:59PM) (new)

Liz Alane Ferguson is another female author that's gotten high ratings.

Are there any good male authors anyone would recommend? Anything that sounds interesting to me is written by a woman.

message 7: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 2412 comments I'll bet Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell will fit this one. It's certainly medical and a memorable book.

Elizabeth (Alaska) A google search produced this interesting link:

Elizabeth (Alaska) I'll be interested to see what others choose, but right now, I'm going with:

The Bone Garden
The Anatomy of Deception

(as I pulled these up, I noticed that The Bone Garden has several listings and might work for 15.8 same titles.)

message 10: by Liz (last edited May 21, 2010 01:49PM) (new)

Liz I don't know anything about this book, but saw it on a forensics novel list on Amazon. Does The Alienist work for a male author?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Liz, Caleb Carr is also on the list linked above as being an author of forensic thrillers.

Great! I didn't notice when I looked, so thank you!

For a male author, I really enjoyed the first Dexter book. Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. I read the second in the Dexter series as well, but it was not as good as the first, which was really great!

message 14: by Liz (new)

Liz Would Blindness work for a medical mystery?

Thanks Donna Jo, this book is on my tbr also!

message 16: by Petra (new)

Petra In the Woods is on the Listopia list. I think I'll use that for the female author. Is that acceptable, Cheryl?

message 17: by Liz M (new)

Liz M Liz wrote: "Would Blindness work for a medical mystery?"

Cheryl will have the final say, but Blindness is generally found in the fiction/literature sections of libraries & bookstores.

message 18: by Liz (new)

Liz What about Shutter Island?
"Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe's radical approach to psychiatry? An approach that may include drug experimentation, hideous surgical trials, and lethal countermoves in the shadow war against Soviet brainwashing ..." - would this work as a medical thriller?

message 19: by Liz (new)

Liz Sorry I'm posting so many questions. This genre is just very foreign to me.

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments Liz wrote: "What about Shutter Island?

Now that one I think would work. Cheryl would have final say, of course.

Really helpful list, Elizabeth - thanks for posting!

message 23: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 811 comments If approved, I'll be reading:

Countdown by Iris Johansen and
The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver

message 24: by Liz M (new)

Liz M Pious Deception by Susan Dunlap
Deadly Errand by Christine Green
Fatal Diagnosis by Mary Kittredge
The Holiday Murders by Marsha Landreth
Elective Murder by Janet McGiffin
Black Justice by Stella Shepherd

message 25: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrisa-uk) | 222 comments I love forensic/medical thrillers ... but I'm having trouble finding a good male author!

Would any of these work?

Hold Tight by Harlan Coben
Too Close to Home by Linwood Barclay
Lifeless by Mark Billingham

And for the ladies, I think this one works:
Bloodstream by Tess Gerritsen - and I think most of hers would work.

There's also

Kathryn Fox
Kathy Reichs

Andreea (andyyy) | 59 comments Liz wrote: "Would Blindness work for a medical mystery?"
It would be so wonderful if that worked.
Medical thrillers/mysteries were what my mom used to read when she was a med student. I think we still have a stack of them at home somewhere, awful pulp fiction covers and all. Please tell there is something I could read for this task that's not cheesy and cliche-ridden romance disguised as a thriller. :/

message 27: by Julia (new)

Julia (bambbles) | 114 comments Would Face Time count for this genre. I won a copy recently and wouldn't mind actually taking the time to read it.

message 28: by Nicole (new)

Nicole | 1295 comments I am so excited! I keep meaning to read Dexter!!! Love the series!

message 29: by Kiri (new)

Kiri | 94 comments Here is what I have picked out.
25.4A (For/Myst Male Auth) The Case of the Stuttering Bishop (Perry Mason) by Earl Stanley Gardner 1936 207pp
25.4B (For/Myst Female Auth) The Lady Chapel: An Owen Archer Mystery (Owen Archer, #2) by Candace Robb 1994 287pp

For any of you who like your books on Kindle, and want to read Tess Gerritsen, The Surgeon is available at amazon now for $1.99.

message 31: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 107 comments I loved The Surgeon! It's one of the few mysteries that made me double check the locks at night while reading it.

Here's another list of books with forensic detectives.

The parent website has a bunch of lists of mysteries involving different topics, professions, etc.

Nice list!

message 34: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments I noticed that for Cheryl's task the female example of a forensic science author is Robin Cook. Isn't Robin Cook a guy?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yep!

Lol! You learn something new everyday. :oD

message 37: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments That's my fault I added the examples and didn't check them obviously.

message 38: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments no problem Cynthia. I just thought it was funny because I thought he was a girl too ever since Coma!

message 39: by ColleenPA (new)

ColleenPA | 79 comments This topic is way out of my comfort zone. Can anyone recommend some authors in this genre that are not gory? I can't stand graphic descriptions of, well, dead people. Thanks!

This is not your "normal" forensics/medical mystery, but you might be able to read House Rules by Jodi Picoult. I'm reading it right now and it revolves heavily around forensics.

I liked Shutter Island a lot and it wasn't gory - maybe that's another option if it gets approved.

Jennifer (jml_417) Colleen wrote: "This topic is way out of my comfort zone. Can anyone recommend some authors in this genre that are not gory? I can't stand graphic descriptions of, well, dead people. Thanks!"

If it's approved, I recommend Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin. I read it a few years ago and I'm a wimp when it comes to gory stuff - I didn't find this one to be too bad.

Hope this helps! :)

message 42: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jml_417) I think I've got mine - Outbreak by Robin Cook and if Mistress of the Art of Death by Ariana Franklin is approved, I'll read The Serpent's Tale, the second book in the series. If not, I'll probably go with Death du Jour by Kathy Reichs.

message 43: by Manday (new)

Manday | 307 comments Does The Italian Secretary work? I am sure Caleb Carr's other books work (The Alienist is excellent for anyone who prefers a historical forsenics novel) but I don't know about this one.

message 44: by Erin (NY) (new)

Erin (NY) (erin_p) | 653 comments I don't know anything about this genre, so I was wondering if the following two would work: Misery by Stephen King, and The Likeness: A Novel by Tana French? Thanks!!

message 45: by Felina (new)

Felina | 0 comments This is a really cool task. I have never read a medical mystery book. I'm trying to read only books I own but I might have to make a stop at Barnes for this one.

message 46: by Felina (new)

Felina | 0 comments I don't think Misery would work. Aside from some terrible ankle scenes and descriptions of pain there is no forensics and no detectives. BUT it is a super awesome book!

Thanks, Cait and Jennifer. These look like great suggestions!

message 48: by ColleenPA (new)

ColleenPA | 79 comments Cynthia, does Mistress of the Art of Death work? Many of the reviews include references to forensics! Thanks.

message 49: by Rachel Lee (new)

Rachel Lee (rlcwt9) | 261 comments Has anyone read The Pawn? It seems from some of the reviews to be a forensic thriller, but I can't tell from the description.

Thanks,

ALSO, I HIGHLY recommend anything by Jeffrey Deaver. I love his books.

Oh ok thanks! I think I will try Shutter Island then if it is approved (since I already own it :).
