What are new-in-2011 books are you looking forward to reading?

January: Daughter of Xanadu by Dori Jones Yang
March: Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente
May: Embassytown by China Miéville

Really? Come on, the first book was not that good.
For me, the new Wild Cards Book, Ghost Stories by Jim Butcher, Neverwinter Woods by R.A. Salvatore.

To each, his own.
I enjoyed the hell out of The Name of the Wind.
I would add Dresden, but I'm always looking forward to a new Dresden book, even while reading the current one.

Its certainly a matter of personal taste. I've always found R.A. Salvatore ok but nothing special. I read the first five Dresden books again thinking they were ok, but nothing special and haven't bothered reading any more.
Definitely looking forward to The Wise Man's Fear.
I believe C.S. Friedman's [book:Legacy of Kings is due out this year and I'm really wanting to get my hands on it.
And, if I'm lucky, Scott Lynch's The Republic of Thieves will also release this year.
Didn't realize there was a new gentleman bastard book due so soon. Guess that's another one to look forward to.

I really wanted to know the reason for you and the thousands of other out there for loving so much on The Name of the Wind.
Because it was a fun story with enjoyable characters that kept me entertained throughout?
It wasn't some groundbreaking masterpiece of fantasy fiction. What it did do, was to take the usual fantasy tropes and polished them to a dazzling shine. At least, that's how I see it.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
Edit: Also, if you wanted an opinion on a book, it's easier to ask for it instead of simply saying "it isn't very good" and hoping to goad someone into a reply. Just saying... ;)

I understand, man.
I personally don't see how people love the hell out of Twilight and the like. But hey, at least they're reading something I guess.
Everyone enjoys a different flavor, I suppose. Luckily there are enough of them for everyone to find something they like.

January: Among Others, by Jo Walton
February: Grail and The Sea Thy Mistress, by Elizabeth Bear
March: Deathless, by Catherynne M. Valente
April: Nothing I know of.
May: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making, by Catherynne M. Valente (this might be a reissue though)
June: Naamah's Blessing, by Jacqueline Carey
July: Nothing I know of.
August: A Reckoning of Men, by Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear
September: Nothing I know of.
October: Saints Astray, by Jacqueline Carey
And no titles I'm aware of for November and December, but that's far enough away that there's still hope there might be a Robin McKinley or Patricia A. McKillip title for me. ;)
And I too am looking forward to Wise Man's Fear, though I will be waiting until it's out in mass market because (a) we still have to wait for book #3 so I'm not in a huge rush; and (b) I have a mass market edition of The Name of the Wind and like my series to match. :D As to why I like it enough to put on this list, I'm with Ala: it took a fairly standard epic fantasy story and did it pretty darned well. Nothing groundbreaking, but good old fashioned fun, and Kevin, if you didn't think it was fun I don't think any of us are going to convince you otherwise, nor are you going to convince us that we didn't really enjoy it. You're allowed to not get it, but please remember that online it's very hard to read tone, so simple statements of fact have a tendency to look snide and/or snarky. Which is why I will add a winking smiley to this comment. All friends, right? ;)

That said, The Wise Man's Fear is at the top of my list.
Embassytown looks interesting.
Tiassa, assuming I catch up on the Taltos books to this point.
The Republic of Thieves, if it ever really comes out.
The Heroes by Joe Abercrombie

Damnit, Abercrombie has another one coming out too?
I really need to pay more attention to upcoming publication dates...
I really need to pay more attention to upcoming publication dates...

Stephen Baxter's Xeelee sequence - I am on Flux
Iain M. Banks's Culture novels - I am on Use of Weapons
Peter F Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy - I am on The Neutronium Alchemist
Dan Simmons's Hyperion Cantos - I am on Endymion

Also, Republic of Thieves, if it is indeed released in 2011.
And lastly, book three of David Anthony Durham's Acacia series, which last I heard had a chance at being published in fall of 2011. I don't think it's title has been released yet though...

If Lois McMaster Bujold's latest Vorkosigan book gets published in 2011 I'll be all over that ... but I suspect 2012 is more likely. Hard to say, though.

Yeah, that'd be at the top of my list too, but I just really don't think it's happening. :(
It's an IVAN BOOK!!!! :D

That said, The Wise Man's Fear is at the top of my list.
Emb..."
How can you say that when you can't even give a reason for it. I love the Legend of Drizzt series, especially the Crystal Shard, and I can give you many great reasons for loving the series, but especially the Crystal Shard!

I don't see why anyone should have to defend themselves when stating what books they are excited to read. He didn't say he couldn't give a reason, he just said he didn't feel the need to justify it to you.

That said, I don't see why you have this anti-Rothfuss agenda that makes you attack everyone that says they like that book, in every thread on GoodReads.
Oh hey. Beyond Reality is reading The Name of the Wind in an upcoming month (March, I believe). You can join up over there and blast everyone there for being stupid too. Yanno, those of us too dumb to realize that Rothfuss is a hack.
Wave your four star rating at us and show us who the genius is.

So I guess for the "2011" list it's mostly what's coming out in paperback (dropping the Kindle book price) or who is finishing a series so I will start it. Wheel of Time (Jordan) and Magister (Friedman) come to mind.

The Heroes, Joe Abercrombie
The Dragon’s Path, Daniel Abraham
Ghost Story, Jim Butcher
The Deserter, Peadar O’Guilin
Kings of Morning, Paul Kearney
Fort Freak, GRRM et al
Embassytown, China Mieville
The Hammer, KJ Parker
The Islanders, Christopher Priest
The Wise Man’s Fear, Patrick Rothfuss
The Iron Jackal, Chris Wooding
January: Forsaken
February: Angelfire, The Sworn
March: Iron Crowned, Darkest Mercy, Lover Unleashed
April: City of Fallen Angels, Huntress, The Gathering, Blood Magic
May: Dead Reckoning
July: Forever
August: Bloodlines, Succubus Revealed, Clockwork Prince
October: Silence
November: Blood of Adoria
February: Angelfire, The Sworn

Hey, if you are looking forward to The Wise Man's Fear you should head on to the thread that I posted the fantasy book club's page on basically why you love The Name of the Wind so much to make you look forward to it. For me again, it was not a book that special to be looking forward to the next.

For those who want it, here's the Thread he's referencing.
Now, Kevin, I'm not going to bring up your star rating of the book, or why some like it and some don't. Or why you seem to be on a crusade against it.(oh wait, I just did?)
What I am going to do is ask you to please stop bringing it up in threads it doesn't belong in.
For example, this very thread.
This thread is for books we are each interested in reading in the coming year. It's so that others(like myself) may find out information about books coming out this year that we otherwise wouldn't have known about. It is not for discussing the merits or reviews of a single book that came out years ago.
So let's just leave it at that, k?

I wouldn't look forward to any of those. I'm going to have to blunder about and find books at random again.

The Ghost Brigades - Scalzi
Hound of the Baskervilles
Peace and War
Early Asimov - three volumes
Then the list is vague and vast. I hope to read Thomas Covenant again. I stoped half way through the second chronicles about 23 years ago!
Jonathan's post reminded me about Iain M Banks. need to catch up on the culture novels and finally get past Feersum Endjinn.
Was considering starting the Wheel of Time (any comments please) with so many books I'm not sure about investing so much time in one series.
I'll post my list when I have it finished. I hope to leave room for about 6 books from this group.
Any suggestions on a good Zombie Apocalypse..something like The walking Dead?

Good point Ala, sorry, my bad!

Hey, sorry that I brought the topic up in here.

I usually find out about books by browsing the appropriate bookstore section, reading authors' blogs, or being alerted by my local library when an author I've flagged has something new coming out. (Or occasionally by looking at profiles on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, and frequently by serendipity.)
I've actually been finding out about books I wanted to read being published from the monthly "what are you reading?" threads...

I have to agree with you Nikki. It was a great story, loved it.
