message 435: by Cathy (new)

Cathy | 123 comments Just thought i would share a little adventure I have been having while buying books. I have a particular interest in Lord Howe Island, off the coast of NSW which I have visited a number of times, and will be visiting again in July.

Because it will be a winter holiday I thought I would do some research into the Island's history. so I bought some books published in the 1940s and 50s including Landfall the Unknown by Evelyn Cheesman by Evelyn Cheesman. It deals with the accidental marooning of some people on the island in 1788. What I found amazing was the information I subsequently found out about the author. Lucy Evelyn Cheesman was denied access to Veterinary science because she was female, but became a vet nurse and then studied entomology, becoming the first female curator appointed to Regents Park Zoo in London. She had a lengthy career travelling and collecting specimens, particularly in the Pacific, and spent a stint in Sydney when she became ill on a trip. She published 16 books based on her travels and collecting and made her last trip at 72.I have found it a very captivating true story to stumble on to!

I really liked Child 44 - it's very brutal but a good thriller and the historical context is interesting. There is a sequel too, but I haven't read it as yet.

Cathy - I own one very old copy of an Evelyn Cheesman book, and I read it so long ago I don't remember the title! But there was a bio included and you're right, one fascinating lady.
