May - Pick It For Me Challenge

This month’s PIFM challenge is structured differently to other months so I’m posting the rules now to allow you time to think about what you’d recommend. It's all about YOUR favourites and what you would recommend in the romance genre. I was inspired with the number of new to goodreads members we had sign up last month...
If you're signing up please be aware you may end up with a list that isn't on your tbr pile or for those us how have been reading the genre for a while, we may even be doing a re-read this month (but hey, sometimes re-visiting an old friend that helped set the standard can be a good thing).
So here’s how it’s going to work:
Imagine you're introducing someone who is completely new to the romance genre. You're going to pick a selection of books that fit into the following sub-genres. If you don't normally read in that sub genre then use goodreads lists, reviews, advice from friends etc.
Of course, when you find out who you’re picking for you can tailor your choices to that person (i.e. if you were tossing up between two recommendations pick the one you think they would like best based on their read list) but it still has to be a book that you consider one of the best in the sub-genre.
Also if the book is part of a series please put the series they belong to next to the pick e.g. PNR (Vampire) - Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series)
Sub-genres*
Historical
Contemporary
Urban Fantasy
Paranormal Romance (Vampire)
Paranormal Romance (Something other than Vampires)
Sci-Fi / Futuristic Romance
Romantic Suspense
Erotic Romance
Buddy Read
Pick any book from any romance genre that has been getting great reviews and that neither you nor your pickee has read.
*You’ll notice that I haven’t put inter-racial, Christian, GLBT down as categories that’s because I think all of these can fit into the other categories and don’t really see that what a characters skin tone, religious or sexual preferences have to do with what genre they’re in. So, if your pick for Contemporary happens to have a h/H from different cultural backgrounds, or is an inspirational/Christian story or features a relationship that’s different to h/H that’s fine. It’s all about what you think is the best story to introduce someone to that genre.
And don’t worry next month will be back to the more standard 4 and 4 setup. I just thought this would be a fun change and get us thinking about what books really set the standards in the genres we know and love.
Please see message #62 for the written description we're using for these sub-genres
Additional info for when you get your picks given to you...
Series Clause
Obviously when we’re choosing books to introduce someone to a genre then we’ll be picking the first book if it’s part of a series. So I’m giving you a clause which means that you can read any book in that series if you’ve read the one that was recommended to you. Using the example above, if you’ve been recommended Dark Lover you can read any book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series provided you’ve already started the series. Make sense?

But I just want to be sure....Do we pick one book from each sub genre?"
Yes, you only have to pick one book from each sub-genre. Of course, if you can't choose between two books / series I'm sure the person you're picking for won't complain. :)
Given some of the sub-genres, you're naturally going to be recommending a series. Especially Urban Fantasy... so if you think that the best book in that genre is number three in the series you might write something like...
UF - I really love the In Death series by JD Robb. The best book for me was Immortal in Death but the series starts with Naked in Death.
Now, if the person hasn't read any of the In Death series before, naturally they would start at Naked in Death. If they have started the series then they could read the next book in the series that they haven't read yet even if you haven't mentioned that specific book in your post.
Make sense?

The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a challenge which works pretty much like secret santa. You sign up, get assigned someone to pick for and get given a set of rules for choosing the books for your person. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.
For this challenge, you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or make the person who will be doing the recommending to you, your friend.. On top of that, I strongly recommend keeping your bookshelves updated, otherwise you might end up with a recommendation for something that you have already read.
After sign ups are closed I'll put your names and any extra info I’ve asked for into a magical PIFM randomiser and select you someone to choose for. This will get posted along with the rules for this month.
Whilst you're doing that, someone else is doing your picks for you. When you receive them you pick a book off the list and get reading. You only have to complete one book to have completed the challenge, although many of us end up completing more because we just can't resist a list of books to read.
Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!
INFORMATION NEEDED TO SIGN UP:
Please sign up in this thread no additional information will be needed this month.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Sign up will remain open through to April 28th (8 pm EST Australian time).
You’ll have until MAY 2nd to make your recommendations.
You then have till the end of the month to read your pick and give some feedback.
If you’re new please read the challenge specific FAQ posted at: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/3... Message number 70.
