June Read 2011: Conquest

Johanna, the original idea was I had a ton of ebooks and no time to read, so I came up with a great excuse for working free reading time into my life. :-D
I posted some of my books on our group bookshelf, but you don't have to be limited by that if there's a book you're dying to discuss.
One other consideration is that we thought it would be more interesting if we tried to read stuff that isn't or hasn't been read by the giant m/m GR group that many here belong to (actually I technically belong to it too, I just have never participated).

I think whoever mentioned that last month said they changed their mind, but if I'm incorrect they will remind you.

Thanks Josh!

I think I discussed the first two books in the series in one of the threads? Probably the What are You Reading Now thread.
I admit I was pretty disappointed in them. It was a great idea but the execution was sketchy in the extreme.

That looks good, too. Can I second it, also?

I'll second both State of Mind and Over the Mountain of the Moon! They both look awesome!
Um... I'll also add Regularly Schedueled Life by K.A. Mitchel to the suggestions list.
Do I dare suggest something as historical and hard to read as As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann??? It's on my table, and I'm halfway through it, but could use some inspiration to get it done. Yeah, no sex in it that I know of, and definitely a difficult read.

lol, I forgot to even check. Thanks for asking Josh!
Regularly Scheduled Life is an ebook on Amazon.
As Meat Loves Salt is not, though I doubt anyone would second that one. lol. I'll finish it someday.

@Jordan - I don't see the original nomination for Over the Mountain of the Moon.

I put it on nomination on post#19. I used the bookcover instead of title and forgot to type the title.

So nominees are not going to be posted at the usual place this month?

It's OK so far. If a bit fanfic-ish. The writing is somewhat clumsy and there are a few anachronisms here and there but not so it spoils the story. I just like samurai stories too much to let those things spoil the fun :)
I think I'll postpone reading though. A friend recommended me a book which is first in a BDSM series and it's so good that I'm probably going to hit the entire series as soon as I finish the first book. (It's Chaos Magic) So I guess we'll end up reading "The Mountain Moon" together :D

Dlee, you are soo right about the potential for discussion on As Meat Loves Salt. That would be lively and long, I bet. But hey, I'm certainly up for it if anyone else is!

New GR member here posting to your site for the first time.
I want to nominate a book for your June read.
It's the first book in a really good series of 4 books, so far.
The title and author are 'CONQUEST', by S.J. Frost.
Thanks.

So nominees are not going to be posted at the usual place this month?"
We're just elementary kids let loose. ;) might take a month to rein everyone back in.

Thanks Merith. I was hoping there was an explanation for the change in the way we were doing business. :)

I second the nomination of this book

Conquest is an excellent choice for the group. It has an intricate storyline, but with lots of pros and cons that could make for a lively discussion. It's available as an ebook or in paperback (377 pages).
Dlee, yeah, the fact that it's only in print is a problem. I wish there was a way around it... oh well.
But hey, I bought my print copy in a used bookstore for a dollar. lol, does that count for something?

It's available for Kindle, though still quite expensive.

Tell me when you pick up again. When I am engrossed in a book, I have to finish it in one go before moving on to somehting else. lol.
Yeah, well, I've read one Jay Lygon's story set in that universe and it made me ranted and raved about BDSM vs abuse so I will pass that series.
Cleon wrote: "BDSM vs abuse..."
LOL yeah.. that sums it up nicely. Curing an abuse trauma with heavy BDSM practice :) I find it fascinating :)

I second the nomination of this book

Yay! a nominee I can be enthusiastic about. I also want to second the nomination of Conquest for June. This book is a great read as is the entire series. Susan's comments were right on - so much happens in this story - so, lots to discuss!
Sms wrote: "Susan wrote: "Don't we usually do the nominating under the ongoing thread 'Candidates for Next Month's Read'"

I think the nominees do need to be placed in the right thread -- it's too hard for me to keep track of.
Also, I hate to get all rules and regs here, but the point of having nominees and seconds is so that any book in the poll is assured of at least three people who really want to read it. So I'm not sure it makes sense to have people nominating or seconding more than one book?
Should we maybe move a little more slowly on the seconds so that people can be sure what book they want to support -- or whether they want to nominate a choice of their own?

Obviously I completely agree with your comments on this since I orignally raised the question. However for the June selection it seems easier to just stay where we are and remember to switch back to the *Candidates For Next Month's Read* thread when the nominations begin for the July book.
"Should we maybe move a little more slowly on the seconds so that people can be sure what book they want to support -- or whether they want to nominate a choice of their own?"
I agree. Now that I have seconded Conquest, I would neither nominate a book myself, nor second any additional books for the June read.

@Anne - When it's time for Josh to make up the poll it's easier if he knows which titles you are rescinding. Otherwise it can get very confusing as the entries on this thread continue. :)

Unless we delete the 'second' posts from the thread.

Good point. :) I seconded both State of Mind and Over The Mountain Of The Moon: a tale of a samurai consort. I think Over the Mountain... already has two seconds without mine.

That's true, Anne. But one of those seconds is from someone who has put out multiple seconds and multiple noms which Josh does not want. So let the dust settle a little before you decide where to finally put your support. :)
lol, gosh, this is getting a little confusing. And yeah, I completely forgot which thread we were supposed to post in. Sorry about that!
Should we then have it be either you nominate one or two books, OR you second what's already there, and not do both.
Maybe, just to clear things up, moving over to the other thread once we get the rules set will help things make sense in terms of who's nominating what and who's seconding what?

What Josh is saying is - you can either nominate 1 book OR you can second 1 book each month. Any more than that is not what he wants.

@jordan - But when are you going to make them? We need to move on. You have 2 nominations and 2 seconds listed for June. 3 of them have to go.
lol, thanks for the reminder!
Ok, here's my decision, I'll suggest Regularly Scheduled Life and take out all the others.
Phew! that was a hard decision to make, because I would love to read some of the others mentioned, but I've already got this one on my shelf, so, that's why I picked it.

And was there a title from last month that didn't make it onto the list when it should have? I seem to recall that.
