Two great reviews, Paul. I'm so glad you enjoyed Mr Gum- I think he is absolutely hilarious, to the extent that I have laughed aloud on the train reading him! I didn't enjoy How to Train Your Dragon as much as I expected to, either. I'd recommend The Dragon Whisperer- it's not comic, but it is exciting and a real page turner.
Thanks Nishita. Great reviews. I've used Charlotte's Web for guided reading with high ability Y4 children; it's very good for developing comprehension skills. Rani and Sukh sounds great. Have you read Artichoke Hearts? I agree, it's very important to have books that reflect the children in your class. I remember in my first year of secondary school not reading any books where the protagonist was a girl, and how bored I got with reading!

Thanks Amy. Dear Zoo: A Lift-the-Flap Book is a wonderful book; great for extending children's vocabularies and prediction skills. If you liked The Bad Beginning I'd recommend The Mysterious Howling (The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place #1), a great and very funny read.

Great reviews, thanks! The Guardian's childrens books podcast had a child talking about another David Walliams book
and there is an excellent podcast with Julia Donaldson on her becoming Children's Laureate

Thanks Nazia. It is quite a polarising book. I used Mommy Laid An Egg: Or, Where Do Babies Come From? as part of a bank of resources for sex and relationships education in Y6. It isn't a book I would have in a school or classroom library as part of general reading.

Nazia wrote: "I agree with you Alison and would use this book in the same way. It does have some raving reviews though. Some people love the book so much that they're sharing it with their 2/3 year olds ?!"
Well, I guess if it's their children it's different- as a parent you can make that decision.

Sinead, check you've saved that as a review and not a comment, or it may not show up at the end of PGCE. You're right, sensitive books about death are so important. Goodbye, Mog is great for KS1 as well.

Thanks Nishita. I recently was recommended The Donut Diaries as a sort of British answer to the Wimpy Kid. It's illustrated by David Tazzyman, who illustrated You're a Bad Man, Mr. Gum!

Here is my review of 'Gregory Cool' by Caroline Birch.

Enjoy!

There is a really good 'Reading with Kids' supplement in today's Guardian. It has lots of reading ideas, a strong focus on getting kids interested in books and an article by Julia Donaldson on the value of picture books. Unfortunately it does waste two pages on a Tim Dowling article, who never fails to bore me senseless, but otherwise it is worth a look. It covers 0-7 years today and I think 7-11 in tomorrow's observer.

This is the link to the recommended books: not sure I agree with all of them; in particular the non-fiction list is a bit thin...
