Colleen | 38 comments Hi! Will Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food work for both parts of 15.4? It is shelved under "Environmental" and here is the cover:

In Defense of Food An Eater's Manifesto by Michael Pollan

Looks pretty green to me!

Please post task specific questions in the help thread for that task.

Books in languages other than English may be used. See the rules, Book formats #3 for details

Angie (pinkindle) | 587 comments I plan on reading But I Love Him for 15.1, but I'm not sure if I should claim a GRA ticket for it. The book page shows an author and a pseudonym, and both author pages list the book; one is a GRA and one is not. When searching for the book, the pseudonym shows up as the author, so do I go by that?

When I click on the link that you've provided, both pseudonym Amanda Grace and author Mandy Hubbard show up. Since Mandy Hubbard has the (Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ author) notation after her name, you're OK to claim a GRA ticket. If only Amanda Grace (who has no GRA notation behind her name) was listed, you wouldn't be able to claim a ticket. Clear as mud? ;-)

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3033 comments Is there a new task about reading two books by new authors?

message 13: by Katrina (new)

Katrina (katmcv) | 455 comments Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "Is there a new task about reading two books by new authors?"

Task 30.1, on top of whatever you roll, requires you read from a new to you author, and you can either read another book by the same author if you liked them, or read another book by a new to you author.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3033 comments Thanks, I thought it was in this group.

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments Is it better to submit your tasks individually or save up a bunch and submit in one big post? I was going it individually, but it seemed like everyone else was grouping them. Then I saw a post that asked people not to bunch them all together at the end (gee, think I can understand that one!) So I was just wondering which the mods prefer.

Chris wrote: "Is it better to submit your tasks individually or save up a bunch and submit in one big post? ..."

You may do whatever is easier for you. The most important things to remember to include are your Readerboard name, any required elements, and your total. It REALLY helps to provide a link (use the "add book/author" link above the comment box) to the books claimed- we check every book for length, fit, etc. and that makes review much quicker.

While you can do it however you like, I do find that when I have a list of 8 or 10 tasks in one post, it's not always easy to make sure that one doesn't get skipped. When I have to keep moving away from the post to check on a book, it's easy to miss a task when I get back to a long post.

I imagine each of us has different preferences, but I find the easiest thing for me is to have 3 or 4 tasks in a post - not so much scrolling up and down the spreadsheet, but not so many tasks that I lose track of them.

message 22: by Dlmrose, Moderator Emeritus (new)

Dlmrose | 18433 comments Mod
Good point, Sandy! Especially if GR is being balky.

It also really helps to have tasks in task order number. As you can imagine, the spreadsheet is BIG, and recording tasks out of order is frustrating.

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments Thanks. You guys totally rock! (Yes, I'm the mother of a tween.) I can't even imagine how much work goes into this. I hope you're at least virtually sharing a bottle of your favorite beverage for having completed the Fall challenge.

Wendy UK (wendyuk) | 724 comments When you buy a kindle book it is often shown on Amazon (and on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ too) with a coloured cover, usually like the paperback edition. Of course you don't actually get that cover on your kindle - sometimes a greyscale version, or sometimes no picture at all.

So for cover based tasks can we use the Amazon Kindle cover picture and read the kindle version, or do you expect us to get a real book with a real cover to meet the task requirements?

Re-reads are allowed for any task unless the task specifically states otherwise.

Sometimes when I ask a question and someone responds I'm not always sure if they have the authority to give me permission on something. I have to go and make sure its the task creator (which I know can't have a title) or a mod.

I find it easier to report a book after I read it and then keep track of how many tasks I have done, how many books I read, Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ authors I read, big book tickets I read, task points and grand total. I just add to it every time I add a task.

You can also add like 3-4 tasks at a time. Everyone has their own system

message 32: by Bea (new)

Bea I have an ARC that I am considering for a task. I have read the rule related to ARC and am aware that I can use the book. However, the rule says I must post a link to the book. I usually choose my book on GR by the ISBN number but the ARC has two ISBNs. One is labelled ARC ISBN and the other is just ISBN.

The regular ISBN brings up a book with the same cover but different pages and listed as a hardback, whereas my copy is paperback. Since my copy is ARC and therefore not readily available to others, I hesitate to make changes or add it as a separate edition. I am not counting pages and neither the book in GR or my copy would make a Big Book, so I can live with incorrect page numbers. I also can live with incorrect format, but do y'all care about this level of accuracy?

The ARC ISBN does not bring up any book. In fact I get an error message.

So would my link be to the inaccurate copy but same ISBN?

Please post the edition that gives enough information to review the task/book connection. If there is a better description or any metadata in one of the editions post that one.

Haha! That is easy as the task is connected only to the author's name. Thanks!

It would fit 20.3 - T T W M A, you can make watt.

It would also fit 25.9, Historical Fiction (Option 6) and maybe YA, since some people have shelved it as that and it seems to be about someone young.

The Rotten School series is definitely elementary grade level (my son read them in 4th and 5th grade), but some of the others are definitely older - like the "Senior Series." You may have to look at each of his series to try to figure out which would be more age appropriate.

ÓË¥M±ð²¹²µ²¹²ÔÓË¥ (fadedrainbows) | 101 comments I'm a little confused about the Young Reader rules.

100 Cupboards Umbrella Summer Are these two books considered Young Reader books? They're designed for 4th to 5th graders, not emerging readers. I consider emerging reader books at the 2nd and 3rd grade level. Does that make sense?

message 42: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8856 comments i'm not a mod, and i'm sure they will clarify, but a good way to look at them is to do like search inside the book on Amazon - the young reader books have the larger font, and the wider margins, with more space between the lines/less lines on a page

Connie G (connie_g) | 358 comments I need to check with a mod about books for young readers for 20.2. Here's some background for Young Reader books

The Task Creator does have some input into what is appropriate for his or her task. It is always best to ask about specific books in the appropriate help thread.

In very general terms- again, ask if there is a question, if a book has been shelved as middle grades or YA, it is appropriate for SRC tasks.

Young Reader books may be used for 5-15 point tasks so you don't need to ask about that aspect of a book for those tasks. 20 point and higher---best to ask about specific titles in the help thread

message 48: by Connie (new)

Connie G (connie_g) | 358 comments I'm going to assume that the 3rd and 4th grade level books are appropriate then for a 20 point task.

Connie wrote: "I'm going to assume that the 3rd and 4th grade level books are appropriate then for a 20 point task."

The suitability of primary grade books is based less on the target age and more on the reading accommodations- the formatting, etc.

I've questioned Vietnam #1: I Pledge Allegiance as well. I know Amazon says third grade and up, but I think that has got to be a mistake or Scholastic has purposely mislabeled the book to try to increase sales. (It was the hottest seller at our middle school book fair last month.) The book is definitely intended for at least 5th grade and up. While I don't like to say that any book is "inappropriate" for anyone - I think the number of third graders who would actually read/comprehend this book is very limited.
