December Monthly Challenge

This thread is the suggestions thread for the different categories. The participants thread is located HERE .

1. 'D' is for December: Read a book that starts with 'D' or a book whose author's first or last name starts with 'D'.

2. Happy Birthday!: Read a book from a December birthday celebrant's GR bookshelf whose "day" falls on the same "day" as yours. If no one has the same day, choose someone with the closest day to yours. December Birthday List

3. Geography: Read a book whose author, setting or character is from Italy.

4. Christmas Theme: : Read a book that has a "Christmas" word in its title (mistletoe, christmas, holiday, santa, reindeer, etc) or has a Christmas theme cover.

5. Walt Disney's Birthday: Read a young adult book or a book that has been made into a family friendly movie.

6. Explore-A-Series: Start a new series or continue a series that you have wanted to get back to.

7. Pearl Harbor Day: Read a book that has war related theme or characters.

8. Fruitcake & Pumpkin Pies: Read a book that the character, the title or the cover is food related. (ie. Visions of Sugar Plums)

9. Holiday Clean-Up: Read a book that you need for another challenge. Be sure to say for which challenge. (Monthly or a Yearly Challenge)

10. Reader's Choice: Read any book of your choice.

Challenge Duration: December 1 � Decbember 31, 2011

You can choose 3 , 5 , 8 or all 10 categories depending on your reading speed, books availability and/or time commitment.

When posting your challenge progress, please make sure to put the date/s when you finished your book/s.

I'm not sure if this is the list Debbie meant but this does say War/Romance Novels.

I'm going to recommend Letters From Home by Kristina McMorris for the War category. I've read it and loved it.

Am I reading # 5 incorrectly, read any ya book or ya book that's been made into a movie?

Same question as Penney here.

I read that as any YA book or any book (not necessarily YA) that had been made into a kids/family movie.

I read #5 the same as Karen.

Good question. I read it the same as Karen: as #1. read a YA book or #2 read any book that has been made into a family friendly movie.

If you want, you can read any YA book or read any book that has been made into a family friendly movie. Any book as long as the movie is G, PG, PG-13.

so, no Bridget Jones's Diary (it is rated R)

For 'Pearl Harbor day' does a battle between good and evil count here? I was wondering if the book Envy would fit in the category

hmm, I am going to say that would be fine.
I was thinking more along the lines of military style actions, but Envy does draw battle lines.

I made a Holiday shelf and a bunch of them are lendable if you would like to borrow one or just check it out for ideas. If you read any m/m I really liked Dickens With Love and it's lendable. Also Mistress Christmas by Lorelei James is a fun read.

a good Christmas read could be Leslie Meuer mystery, sure she has a Christmas one, I have A Christmas in Wales to read

Would the Ascension in the Immortals After Dark Series be considered a war?

I haven't read that one yet, not sure.
Is it more than just a few people fighting, are they fighting for a cause (good vs. evil type)? I think it is, so yes I am going to say go with it this time.

The line in the series is that the Ascension happens every 500 years. It's sort of a weeding out of good vs evil Lore species. If you like paranormal you should check it out.

Debbie, will The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf work for the Christmas category? It seems to have the trees used during then as background.. (Long shot, I know!!)

For the Walt Disney Birthday category, I was wondering if we could use a book that had been made into a family friendly series instead of movie? I was thinking about listening to the audiobook of Anne of Green Gables.

Yeah, there has actually been a few movies and tv movies made based on it. Go for it and enjoy :)

For the geography category, does the main character have to be from Italy or can it be a supporting character? I'm reading Glory in Death and one of the possible suspects is Italian. Alternatively, I read Heartless, and the main character in that is half-Italian. Would either of those count?

I would suggest using Heartless. It sounds like the main character is half. Italian, which would be better.
