Victory (DKB) (digitalkb) | 6 comments I'm a book blogger, a book reviewer, a web designer and I'm thinking about launching an author website promo for the remaining days of the Month. I will be helping authors who don't have a professional website create one for a discounted rate of $70 instead of my regular fee of $150, if you have a hosting plan purchased already. if you don't, I can design the website for FREE as long as they're willing to purchase their hosting account through my affiliate link

Please help me spread the word about my promotion to your author friends. Anyone interested can contact me on this email:

[email protected]

Using "Author website promotion from ŷ" as the subject of the email.

You can send me a friend request too. I also accept paid reviews of $5. I'll purchase your book on Amazon (kindle copy less than $2) and leave a review on ŷ and my book blog

Stay Safe

Ally | 49 comments “Keep reading. It’s one of the most marvellous adventures that anyone can have.

-Lloyd Alexander

Hey There!

I hope you and your family is safe during this time of crisis. I recently made an online book chatting website called- . Book-Talks is a platform where passionate readers like you and me and book readers from around the world can come and chat about their favourite books. For e.g. If you’ve read a famous book then why not chat about the book with readers who have read the same book share your thoughts on the book, the best moments and scenes in the book, post a fan edit for a part of the book you liked or disliked etc. I really really wish you would check Book-Talks and contribute in its aim for connecting book readers all over the world. Lastly, as said by Lloyd Alexander books are the best form of an adventure then why not share your adventure with others and also be of their adventures.

(PS: Thank you for spending your precious time reading this message. I Pinkie Promise that you will love Book-Talks and Book-Talks loves you back for visiting it.... Thanks again!! Have a wonderful day!)

Brett Bird | 8 comments Hello website designers.

I used Elementor Pro over Wordpress.org for my site. I self-designed it. Could someone with more experience than I, please look it over and give feedback?? It looks pretty barebones and well..... striaght from the 90s. I'd appreciate it!

message 108: by Ninja. (new)

Ninja. Ninja | 1 comments Your site is hard to figure out. Put your book on the front page. Also, have your site pop up in a new window and don't replace the one people are on. Your links don't really make sense to me. Sorry, but it needs a lot of work. I am not a web designer, so you should ask others.

I can say that you are much braver than I. I hacked away at a WordPress website for a couple of months before I went back to the tried and true I've used in the past.

I do have one question. there are only three menu items at the very top where they are traditionally found. You have another three menu items in the main body. There's no right way or wrong way, but folks are used to primary menu items appearing together.

One thing I don't get about so many WordPress themes is the massive banners that take up so much space. It would be fine for the home page, but kind of gets in the way everywhere else. Your home page is a nice 'splash' page, as they say. These things are always a work in progress, but if or when you have a video, that would be nice to embed in your site to liven things up. If you have some good quotes, testimonials, or blurbs you could splash around that can be added as time goes on.

My own website is a work in progress, so I would appreciate some feedback as well?

Cheers!

What exactly are you looking for in a web page?

message 112: by Trish (new)

Trish Arrowsmith (trisharrowsmith) | 46 comments Ugh! I tried to use Wordpress for an actual website with no luck. I changed and went with Webnode without realizing there is no way to switch templates after choosing one. I don't have any menu items on the top of my page at all. It's frustrating and I'm not sure it's very user friendly.

I checked out your page. The main thing that stuck out to me was the lack of contact. Yes, you have a contact page but most people won't reach out to you if they need to leave the page to do so. I would recommend signing up for a service like Mailchimp that allows a text box they can type into that will go directly into your mail box.
There is one more thing that I noticed but would prefer not to post it publicly. Is it okay if I message you?

Michael Scharen | 147 comments Trish wrote: "Ugh! I tried to use Wordpress for an actual website with no luck. I changed and went with Webnode without realizing there is no way to switch templates after choosing one. I don't have any menu ite..."

I had to go back to the tried and true and just write it myself. As far as I can tell, the thing that sets WordPress apart is the database included for running the blog. I thought the blog would be fun, but it was not worth the effort and frustration. I will give it a go later, but for now I just point people to my blog page here at goodreads.com -- but make sure it opens in a separate tab so they don't abandon my website completely.

The lack of freedom in WordPress was the worst for me. I could teach myself html, javascript, and css faster. I know folks swear by it, but I got tired of one plug-in interfering with another or with the theme itself. People can teach themselves to create a website pretty quickly using Dreamweaver or some other easy or free design software.

I've never even heard of WebNode. I tried Wix and Wordpress and that was enough.

Here's a hint though. I put my website up on Infinity Free (which is free) and did my SSL (https:// certification) for free with Cloudflare. If you are going to take money on your website, you will need that last s and the padlock symbol, though the entire SSL game is a scam. I wasted $10 on one company that had zero tech support. Some outfits charge as much as $100/year! I still need to go and try to get my money back. Infinity Free also has no tech support but if anyone has questions maybe I can help now that I've been through it.

Cheers!

I went ahead and created my own website from scratch. I tried WordPress but it was too confusing and too restrictive with the plug-ins conflicting with themes or other plug-ins. It took a lot of hard work and the learning curve was steep but this week the DIY shopping basket and Buy Now buttons are in place.

There are two ways to buy a) Bitcoin or Bitcoin Lightning Network and b) NowPayments.io with nearly any kind of cryptocurrency one could imagine plus Visa or ApplePay for those using fiat currency.

Erika Harken (erikaharken) I've been a website designer since 2016, and I just created a Patreon membership that helps authors build a website they love on self-hosted WordPress easily.

I know it can be difficult to tackle a decent website for a lot of people, so I broke down my knowledge as simply as possible and offer my 1-1 support to those who join.

However, you can get started with a self-hosted WordPress site and build the basic template I design in the step-by-step video on my Tech Savvy Author page for free!

(Membership to my Patreon is only required for unlocking my video library, resources, and receiving support. It is $14/month and you can cancel anytime.)

I also have an audiobook membership that is scheduled to launch in April. If you have any questions, just ask!

As a UX designer, I was never really a fan of goodreads when it comes to its social aspects because it's a bit flawed and hard to use. That's why I'm designing a similar application that can provide a better experience to everyone who likes to read. Everyone's input will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
