Other than our group reads, what is everyone reading? I just picked black lightning by john Saul back up tonight and around 20% it is starting to get good. I read bloodrush by Bryan Smith last night and it was excellent.

message 2: by Johnny (new)

Johnny | 57 comments I've started "The Unfixed Stars" (titled "Parcival's Planet" in the US) by Michael Byers (5% into it).

message 3: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine I have went ahead and started Unholy Night by Seth Grahame-Smith since it did not look like it would be picked as the group read, I must say that it is a great read so far.

That one didn't sound like my cup of tea, I do want to read Abraham linkoln vampire slayer though.

message 6: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine Abe Lincoln was awesome IMO.

message 7: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter was good, though it did have some dry/boring parts in it.

I am reading TOWARDS YESTERDAY by Paul Jones. A new (at least to me) take on the time travel thing. People are sent back in time to a point 25 years in the past, but remember everything up till the point of time travel. They end up in their younger selves at the location they were at in that time and a lot of chaos and destruction happens (especially from people who all of a sudden were driving cars). Good book so far.

message 8: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (PastaJen) I am trudging through The Stand by King. Its hit a particularly dry spot so I'm struggling a bit. A common problem I've had with his books.

message 9: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Yea, that book had one or two slow spots. I liked it for the most part though when i finished it. I hadn't seen the Miniseries though before reading it so it was all new to me when i read the book.

message 10: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I have not read the stand, I am not a big fan of king. I don't hate him or anything I just don't like reading his longer books because alot of them get so weird towards the end that I end up not liking them but want to finish and see what happens and then I end up disappointed with the entire book and feel like I wasted my time.

message 11: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I have put swan song by Robert mcammon on my tbr list, I hear that one is very similar to the stand.

message 12: by Char (new)

Char Swan Song is a bit similiar to The Stand, in the fact that they're both PA books. When I first read SS, it was not long after I had read The Stand, and I couldn't help but compare the two. I waited another year or so, then tackled SS again and I loved it. : )

I am currently reading The Loon with my horror group and liking it so far. The Loon is the nickname for the privately owned Crane Institute for the criminally insane.

I am also trying to squeeze in some Wilkie Collins for the classic horror group-The Haunted Hotel.
I was hoping to get this group's read in as well, I'm still trying. : )

message 13: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) Swann Song is on my wish list for books to read and discuss. Its just one of those books I want to do more then read.

I loved both Abe linoln vampire hunter book and movie. That has influenced my vote for next months books

message 14: by Justin (last edited Jul 19, 2012 07:26PM) (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I would vote swann song as a group read but it might be a little long for some people to want to do as a group. Plus it sounds like a few members have already read it so it probably wouldn't get voted on. I am still reading black lightning by john Saul and it is boring as ever, there was a couple pages that it started to pick up but then it didn't so I am taking breaks to read other stuff. I finished brain cheese buffet by Edward Lee last night.

message 15: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Started reading DON'T LOOK TWICE (Ty Hauck #2) by Andrew Gross and re-reading AREA 51: THE MISSION (Area 51 book 3)by Robert Doherty (aka Bob Mayer) at work today.

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Started reading 'like porno for psychos' by wrath James white. Its a short story collection so I have something short when I need a small break from the novel I am reading.

message 17: by Char (new)

Char I finished The Loonand I thought it was pretty good. This is the second book we've read by this author Michaelbrent Collings.
He is/was a screenwriter and his books sort of read like movies-with very fast pacing and extremely short chapters.
In addition to starting The Haunted Hotel I also started reading a novella Spores and it's pretty freaky. : )

message 18: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I know, Swan Song is just one of those books that as much as I would like to do it in a discussion I never will. Its really long and its old. So most have read it and aren't willing for a reread.

I have never read a book by Saul I like. Sorry Saul fans.

i am just curious, what saul books have you read and not liked? i am not a huge fan of his books but i liked black creek crossing, shadows, and the homing. suffer the children was ok and the one i am reading now is boring but i will get through it.

message 20: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
i finished like porno for psychos and it was alright after the third story in, that one was very disturbing and i didnt enjoy it at all. it was so bad i quit reading the book for the night and considered giving it up all together, the rest where good though but my overall rating here on goodreads was knocked down by that one story.

i am reading ghosts in the attic by mark allen gunnells. i am anxious to finish black lightning and start a new novel. on top of the wrath james white books i bought the other night i also picked up shades because even if it dont win i intend to read it. i see unholy night got a second vote now that the first voter is almost done reading it, it still isnt even close to winning though.

That's good to hear, I plan on reading Abe Lincoln and if I like it I will give that one a read also.

message 26: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I have read Suffer the Children and Black Creek Crossing by Saul. It not so much his stories as the way he writes. I just don't really care for the way he puts the words toghether.

Starting frayed by Tom piccirilli, I was going to suggest this as a group read untilled I realized its only a novella. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25...

message 29: by Char (last edited Jul 27, 2012 07:13AM) (new)

Char Justin, if you like that one, you may like Clown in the Moonlight which is another novella by Piccirilli. I enjoyed it a lot.

I finished Wilkie Collins' The Haunted Hotel. I thought it was good, but it wasn't scary, it was more of a mystery. I also finished Ian Woodhead's Spores. I thought this one was a lot of fun, and very imaginative, but needed some editing and proofreading.
I am currently reading Cameron's Closet by Gary Brandner (author of The Howling) and my first ever library loan The Passage. The Passage started out very slowly. I'm about 35% in now, and all of a sudden the story just exploded.
I can't wait to get back to reading it. : )

message 30: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I did like frayed though it got kind of confusing at the end. Spores looks good, I added it to my tbr list after you mentioned it here earlyer. I didn't like the passage that much, it was alright but by the end I was glad it was finally over.

message 31: by Johnny (new)

Johnny | 57 comments Reading "Odd Apocalypse". Of course.

So how are you reading that early? I assume you mentioned it in the dkc. But I have had problems logging in on my phone.

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I started ancient images by Ramsey Campbell. It is the group read in the horror aficionados book club for next month, but I couldn't take any more genital grinder right now so I started this a day early.

message 40: by Char (new)

Char I see what you're saying about The Passage, Justin.
I'm about 570 pages in. It was good, then it was boring, boring, borin and now it's good again. I feel like I've been reading this book for a year.

message 41: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine I loved The Passage and am anxiously awaiting The Twelve.

Just finished A Canticle for Leibowitz gets 5 stars.

Now starting Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill.

message 42: by Scott (new)

Scott (ttownscott) I'm working through the Riverworld series from Filip Jose Farmer. In between books I read a story or two from HP Lovecraft on my Kindle. At the beginning of the year I signed up for every e-book published by "Cemetary Dance" and it looks like "Shades" will be the first that I read with this group.
Scott

message 43: by Char (new)

Char I finished The Passage. I felt that the end saved it a bit. I will read the sequel, but I'm not in a hurry about it.
Our horror group started Bleed.

In between I read an awesome horror short called Fluffs. Think maniacal, hungry Tribbles. : )

message 44: by Marc-Antoine (new)

Marc-Antoine Another great book with Heart-Shaped Box, also tried a graphic novel The Cape, first one I read and I enjoyed. A few stories into The Dead That Walk: Flesh-Eating Stories and having fun with it.

message 45: by Char (new)

Char I'm a little behind. Our horror group read Eerie by the brothers Crouch. It was different but I didn't like the ending. We then read Cameron's Closet which was a decent story but not very scary.
I'm in the mood for some humor so I'm going with oversized fire ants in Mandibles. : )

message 46: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I didn't care for the ending of eerie either, I loved the rest of it though. Mandibles is on my tbr list. Some of strands books are good and some are really really stupid.

message 47: by Matt (new)

Matt McRoberts (nemesis0) | 404 comments Mandibles was pretty good. I read it a while ago.

Currently re-reading THE ROOKIE by Scott Sigler. Got it as a paperback the other day and am gonna read the series again because the fourth book comes out early next month.

message 49: by Char (new)

Char I think Dwelleris my favorite Strand book, so far. I thought Pressure was good as well.
Ok-going back to my giant fire ants. : )

message 50: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I liked gleefully macabre, his short story collection. I think my favorite of his novels is probably wolf hunt, the worst I have read of his is fang boy. Dweller was alright but I don't see why everyone thinks its his best novel I wasn't really satisfied with the ending. A bad day for voodoo was stupid but it made me laugh a couple times.
