Well two are YA so they were pretty fast reads and the other three are by authors on my must reads so they were easy to get caught up in. I really couldn't put any of these books down once I got started.

It's only Feb 6th (and before noon) so to have finished 5 books definetly makes you a fast reader! lol

lol yeah well I had a lot of free time for a few days.It was either watch TV, talk on the pkone or read. I choose to read. I'm in most of every challenge that YZ and some others have come up with, So I have to get reading b/c FEB is a short month.

I'm new to the challenges, so although I've signed up for all ten categories in this one... we'll see how many I get through. Zoya, for instance, is not a short book with 500 pages. And if I want to read Outlander (on my A-Z Challenge lists) with a BOM discussion group, two groups started it this month. And that book is definetly NOT short either. lol

I know, but I kinda wanted to join in a BOM for Outlander. Or at least find a few people to discuss it with. I was directed to two groups on goodreads that started a BOM for this book, and both started it in Feb, although one put it down as Feb-Mar since it's over 600 pages. So if I want to join in with them I should at least start it in Feb.

Oh you could suggest it in the BOM group we have going as a read for March :) I believe you are a member there already (forgive me I am bad with names and there are so many!).

As a matter of fact I am going to put it into the book list because I want to read it too!

Which group is that Tricia, so I'm sure to be in the right one. I'm just not sure I can fit it in this month with all I've got for our challenge, but I definetly think it would be good to discuss that book in a BOM as I read it.

OKay, I joined that one. I don't think I read much (if anything lol) that would fit within the paranormal or urban fantasy category. Although I did read Meg Cabot's young-adult mediator series that has the teen heroine falling in love with the teenage male ghost that haunts her bedroom. lol And The Aunt Dimity mysteries has the heroine speak to her dead aunt through a journal. But if they're reading Outlander, I'm there. lol I have the feeling I might need a support or discussion group to get through it. lol

P.S. I'm pretty sure what paranormal is. But what is a good definition of urban fantasy?

Jael: Are those "*" your ratings of the books? I am not keeping up with the reviews (last couple days).

lol, We've all had that conversation many times.
Basically, paranormal romance is a romance novel (boy meets girl, then HEA) with paranormal elements; vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, etc.
Urban fantasy is very similar, except they're not romance novels. There may be a romantic story line involved or some romantic tension, but it's not the primary focus. They are fantasy novels set in a contemporary setting similar to the world we live in, rather than a totally made up world like regular fantasy.
They tend to be mysteries or adventure type stories, involving a lot of those same paranormal elements I mentioned above. Some of them have great romances in them, but some don't have any at all.

Yeah those are my ratings. It sort of my tracker for when I go write reviews on my blog.(although I've been lacking with that one)

So would the Harry Potter novels fall under Urban Fantasy? Half the (muggle) world is normal and one of Harry's teachers was a werewolf. (I have read all of those! lol) Supposidly, if you like those you'll like the Artemis Fowl series, which I havn't read yet. (I did find the second book in the series for 60 cents at Goodwill so picked that up this week.) Heard Eragon was a good book (written btw by a teenager) but havn't read those either. The last one is probably considered fantasy, which is what I would have put the HP series into as well.

I think Harry Potter is more regular fantasy, since most of it takes place in imaginary places. If it took place in London, it would probably be UF. But Hogwarts, and Diagon Alley and all those places are fantasy locations. But HP does kind of ride a line, because it does ostensibly take place in the real world...

Depending on the book you're in, there are quite a few scenes in London. I always thought it was fantasy, but I wondered based on the UF definition if it counted.

Well, I definitely think HP kind of rides a line between the two, but it doesn't have the same gritty realism I typically associate with Urban Fantasy. Anyone else have a take on it?

Stephanie, I loved Good in Bed by Jennifer Weiner. Read it a long time ago when I still read contemporary stuff. Fun read. Hope you enjoy it.

I have had this book for ages...but I have never bothered to read it. Now that I have put it in my challenge, I guess I will be reading.

I would say the Harry Potter series is Fantasy not UF because much of the story take place in places that don't actually exist. Yes, they are in London some but even then, most are made up places. It's not like traditional UF where the majority of the action takes place in an urban environment such as New York, LA, St. Louis, etc... There are definitely some series that straddle the line. The Merry Gentry series for example is partly in LA but then also in the made up world of the fairy courts. Then you have the whole is it UF or Paranormal Romance which also continues to blur the line. PRN to me focus more on the romance and UF/Fantasy more of the action but authors are increasingly melding the two together.

It's funny, I also have two titles in my monthly challenge list of books that I owned for quite some time, and keep pushing back when it comes to reading, because library books come first. But now, with the challenge, I will get to read them.

Just finished my third book A Rush of Wings. I loved this book. It was a dark Urban Fantasy with a really damaged "hero" but it was a nice change of pace from all the PNR I've been reading lately. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel.
