As I read it
Husband was a wealthy businessman cum peer Lord from Britain with influential friends in London and Norway, Wife the Norwegian heiress to a huge car maker fortune who had been critically ill but lately given the all clear by her doctors, and Lover a waitress and aspiring actress who had been impressed by and enamored with Husband.
Impersonation was part of the modus operandi in this macabre thriller.
Il all started with the maiden cruise - also press trip - of Husband's small but luxury boat along Norwegian fjords. Participants included, apart from Husband and Wife, Husband's cronies and their spouses, the press, but also, smuggled in by Husband, Lover who secretly stayed in Cabin 10, kept vacant on purpose. As Wife was secretly due to leave the boat late on the first night, Lover was scheduled to be disguised as Wife and take her place for the duration of the cruise, only to get off and disappear on dry land and resume her own self when the cruise ended.
But things turned out differently. On the first night, Wife, who was still on the boat and covered with blood, had to be put by force into a suitcase and thrown overboard, possibly still alive, by Husband with a reluctant Lover's assistancce.
And this was only the beginning. Lover had been briefly seen and talked to before she was disguised by a young female journalist whose Cabin was next to hers and who was in need of mascara. In the middle of the night the same journalist saw blood splattered all over the glass wall between both cabins and heard a big splash as if someone was thrown into the sea. But the blood switly vanished and her relentless efforts to trace her neighbor in the following days remained stubbornly vain. Then she started receiving warnings not to digger further and eventuall got locked and starved.
When at last she discovered that her gaoler was none other than the girl next door, Lover, who began getting scared of Husband, offered to help her escape unhurt, disguised as Wife. Lover, however, was not so lucky. She died. And Husband took his own life.
One may wonder how a man of Husband's stature and means could have conceived such a crude and dicey scheme as his and carried it out as poorly. But weird things happen, of cours, in real life. In the case at hand, they allowed the poor journalist to survive - and narrate.
