I really enjoyed this science fiction work - the author did an excellent job at introducing new technology/terms without it being overwhelming. The tension between siblings, the tension at the archaeological site - it all creates a fascinating and engaging world. This novel is set in Asheville, NC near the turn of the 20th century. The plot was interesting but events were predictable. The inclusion of race struggles and some labor disruptions during the time was a welcome addition, though. Overall the characters were a bit cut and dry - there was little-to-no character growth or depth, which led to the story falling a bit flat for me.
