Jayson’s Reviews > Red One, Book One: Welcome to America > Status Update

Jayson
Jayson is starting

Notes:
(1) Let's read something French!
(2) This will be my first European-style comic album, which are similar to graphic novels, but half the length, prestige format, and oversized. Sort of like what DC Comics does with their Black Label books.
(3) The original title of this is "Red Skin." Understandably, it was changed for the American market.

Dave Schaafsma seeing you have it, I also just ordered it, ty

Alexandra Elend Wolf I'm intrigue... If only to look for it in French and practice that way... It had not occurred to me to read French comics as practice.

Happy I could get it on your radar, David! I look forward to hearing what you think of it. I’ve only just started, so I don't have much of an opinion about it yet, but I’m a big fan of the Dodsons from their cover work and look forward to seeing their art in sequentials :)

I know for certain that comics as a medium is commonly used to improve reading comprehension among children with learning disabilities. I'm sure it could be practically applied to learning foreign languages as well.

This book is actually surprisingly widely translated. I know there are German, Portuguese and Polish translations as well. Unfortunately for my linguistic ambitions, I merely have the English translation 😅

I can see how that would be a good method for teaching them.

Yet, somehow, it had never occurred to me until right now *lol*

Uhhh, reading the German translation could be fun!

You speak any of those languages?

I took compulsory French my first year of high school, but that's about it. I took Mandarin Chinese the rest of high school and Spanish in university. Of it all, I only retained a little Spanish.

Alexander Peterhans Fun. Have you read any Moebius? Essential European comic artist.

I'm afraid I haven't, I only know him by reputation. This is actually my first ever venture into European comics. Though I am interested in reading more, now that I've got this one under my belt :)

That's so fun! I'm a native Spanish speaker. Learned English through highschool, some, and a lot of my own time studying XD Started learning French a few years back and I'm now in midium level and have just started to learn Chinese, though pinyin because it's supposed to be the more global *lol*

I've never been good at languages myself, which is probably why I kept switching. Mandarin was a disaster for me because I'm useless at memorization, so I could neither read nor write well at all. Pinyin was better, but I'm also tone deaf, and so wasn't so good at pronunciation either. 😅

The pronunciation is kind of tricky. I like it because is melodic XD

Glad to hear you're enjoying it 😁👍
