(1) '"Mrs. Weasley had hung a scarlet banner ... "Congratulations Ron and Hermione New Prefects."'
- Cut out the "New Prefects" bit and you could reuse that banner.
- It's always "Ron and Hermione," like they're a music act or a comedy duo.
(2) "Harry’s mood suddenly lifted. His father had not been a prefect either."
- It nearly always boils down to daddy issues.

(1) "Cornelius, I am ready to fight your men and win again!"
- Dumbledore giving orders to Fudge while still an enemy of the state is one of the series most boss moments.
(2) Phineas Nigellus: "You see, Dumbledore? ... Never try to understand the students. They hate it. They would much rather be tragically misunderstood..."
- A bit cynical, but he's not incorrect.

(2) Voldemort calls Bellatrix "Bella"... wonder if he's a "Twilight" fan?
(3) It's easy to forget that people still think Sirius is a murderer.

Bellatrix: "You dare speak his name?"
Harry: "Yeah."
- Good answer, Harry. Very forthright.

(1) Hermione treats Luna like McGonagall treats Trelawney. With open disdain at the mere mention of absurdities, but with affection and friendship when faced against a common enemy.
(2) Harry, Luna and Neville being the only ones who can hear voices behind the veiled archway should have been a light bulb moment, since they're also the only ones who can see thestrals.

- Even in life-threatening situations there's always time for jokes.

a security troll, so "
Ginny: "I’ve got a broom!"
- Ginny being invisible to Harry again. He'll change his tune next book.

(1) Hermione loves elves but hates giants... a bit hypocritical if you ask me. Also ironic since nearly every elf hates her, but Grawp adores her.

Juho Pohjalainen His father did get to be the head boy, though. He's still got ways to go but I'm sure he'll step up and grow into the role!

Too bad Harry never attended seventh year, and was never eligible for that.

Juho Pohjalainen Irony!

Jayson Juho wrote: "Irony!"

I suppose, though only if he's expected to live exactly the same life as his father... they both did marry redheads, so there's that.

Maja Ingrid My fave part in this is Molly going "that's everyone in the family" (being prefects) and Fred and George goes "??? So we're not family then????."

Yeah, that's my favorite part of the whole prefects scene too. Leave it Molly to not let facts get in the way of making an impressive point :)

Oh, so many daddy issues. And mommy issues. And family issues just in general.

You're right about the recycling. I figure, Ron's very used to second hand items. Must be nice to have a first of something, even if it is only a banner :)

Yes, mommy issues as well. Harry, for example, patterns his life after his dad so much that he marries a girl who looks just like his mom. Possibly it's his way of being able to see his mom again. But, I'm probably me thinking too deep about these things as usual. lol

I hadn't meant it like that but you're right, Ron rarely got anything new so the banner was nice.

Aren't we all subconsciously looking for someone that reminds us of our parents? At least, that's the theory.

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "I hadn't meant it like that but you're right, Ron rarely got anything new so the banner was nice."

The banner could be reused in so many ways. Graduation (though Ron didn't graduate), engagement, wedding, baby shower, etc. Can't let a good banner go to waste, especially one with so much sentimental value. Really, saving banners are so much more useful than saving wedding dresses :)

Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Aren't we all subconsciously looking for someone that reminds us of our parents? At least, that's the theory."

That's an interesting thought. I guess parents being the relationship we're most familiar with growing up, it would make sense that it would serve as a model, either to emulate or avoid.

I did read an interesting paper in college once that, if I recall correctly, posited that women tend to choose mates that are either similar or the opposite of their fathers, and that men are attracted to women who closely resemble their first loves (which I suppose wouldn't necessarily exclude mothers 😬).

I will say that Hermione is very much like Molly, in the way they both generally frighten into compliance the men in their lives. 😁

That killed me *lol*

Yeah, I mean, if you have a good relationship with your parents they are supposed to be our first loves so...

Molly and Hermione were scarely similar sometimes. ANd, actually, weren't all the Weasly wives possesed with strong tempers?

Audrey I always wondered about that. I thought you had to be a prefect to qualify for Head Boy/Girl.

Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Yeah, I mean, if you have a good relationship with your parents they are supposed to be our first loves so..."

That makes sense. I'm probably interpreting that way too literally. Ron and Ginny do seem to have very good relationships with their parents.

Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Molly and Hermione were scarely similar sometimes. ANd, actually, weren't all the Weasly wives possesed with strong tempers?"

The only other Weasley wife I can think of is Fleur, and she never struck me as particularly tempestuous. She was, however, introduced as very strong-willed, in a snobby sort of way. Then she remained strong-willed in a "stand by your man" sort of way. Fleur isn't the screaming and arguing type Molly and Hermione are. I'd say the common thread among Weasley wives is stubbornness.

Jayson Audrey wrote: "I always wondered about that. I thought you had to be a prefect to qualify for Head Boy/Girl."

Apparently not. I guess it's like choosing a Supreme Court Justice, it could be one of the existing ones or someone new. Or even like choosing a Pope, they don’t necessarily have to be cardinals. 🤷‍♂

... Okay, taking it literally is just weird XD

Stubborness is the Weasly wives thread. I mean, Angelina is really stubborn as well -at least seems to me since she was a Quiditch player - and... we really don't know anything about Audrey...

Jayson Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "... Okay, taking it literally is just weird XD"

Perhaps "literally" the wrong choice of words. More likely I didn't allow for a looser interpretation :)

I don't know much about Angelina, but I do seem to recall that she become captain of the Quidditch team in this book. I'll have to keep a eye out to check how stubborn she is :)

Angelina was very stubborn, remember how she kept yelling at Harry and Ron in Quidditch practice? (Well I guess that doesn't really show stubborness but it shows a strong will and drive considering that Harry and Ron are...well, Harry and Ron.) The Weasley women are definitely spirited, we'll say that

Kadi P I’ve actually never noticed that but now that you point it out it really does boil down to daddy issues! Harry really missed his dad so much he wanted to be just like his dad? Crazy!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I think after all the comparisons to James plus the trauma and curiosity in losing someone he never knew meant that he wanted to know what James was like, to the point that he's trying to replicate him. Everyone told him "you look just like James" but he didn't get much about what James was really like, so he thinks this is the closest he can get maybe

Jayson AspiringAuthor wrote: "Angelina was very stubborn, remember how she kept yelling at Harry and Ron in Quidditch practice? (Well I guess that doesn't really show stubborness but it shows a strong will and drive considering..."

I'll admit, despite reading the series several times, I don't recall her personality all that well. I'll certainly be paying closer attention this time around :)

Jayson Kadi wrote: "I’ve actually never noticed that but now that you point it out it really does boil down to daddy issues! Harry really missed his dad so much he wanted to be just like his dad? Crazy!"

I think it also has to do with the fact that he never grew up with an adequate father figure. So, he never really had anyone to pattern himself around. Usually, people see the good and the bad, but with Harry, at least at this point, he only sees the good aspects of James. Which sort of elevates him to a kind of saintly figure, who no one talks ill about and only has positive attributes. So, that makes it even more likely that Harry wants to be exactly like him. Had he grown up seeing his faults, perhaps he wouldn't be so fervent about it.

I agree. Harry definitely bases his view of James on almost exclusively second-hand opinion. Though, there are a few concrete facts that he can wrap his head around: playing on the quidditch team, having a stag patronus, not being a prefect, etc. Because those things are statements of fact, they hold more weight with Harry. Which is why his dad not being a prefect puts Harry at ease so quickly and effectively.

Kadi P @Jayson love your analysis on Harry’s father figure issues! It really informs my own writing and my book protagonist who’s also an orphan who’s never met his parents. Coincidentally I already have a whole arc that’s based on his father’s flaws so my protagonist sees that his father wasn’t some saint and saviour who died to protect him.
This is why I always love to see your take on things!👌🏻👏🏻

Thanks! Been writing it on and off since last year so it's slow goings. More like a hobby than something I've flat out committed too but I never seem to find the time to stop reading or drawing or watching TV to fully focus on just writing. Hats off to all the writers out there who actually get the job done!👏🏻
