Notes:
(1) It's been New Year tradition for me to have either my first book of the year or the last book of the preceding year (some years both) be a super-popular novel.
- For 2024 it's "To Kill a Mockingbird."
(2) When I say "super-popular," I don't mean the YA novel de jour that practically no one outside ŷ has even heard of. I mean books that everyone knows, possibly a classic or due to a hit adaptation."

Thanks, Jen! Glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. There's certainly a lot of controversy surrounding this book, but that's as far as I know. I've never seen the movie nor know anything about the book aside from a vague notion of what it's about. I only really chose this because it was on clearance. So, I'm going into it entirely fresh, which will surely be an interesting experience. I also got Go Set a Watchman on clearance too, so I'll probably read that one immediately after :)

Slow to start maybe, but quite profound and an interesting peek at american culture of the time/place (which I found intriguing simply because I'm unfamiliar with it).

Thanks! Happy you have so many great things to say about it. Hopefully I'll be the same experience for me 😁👍

The ‘white saviour complex is there; but I think the overall sentiment of the book is so important and it’s okay to allow some leniency given when it was written.
After all, we can’t expect classics to be updated to today’s social standards (all we can do is acknowledge where they were incorrect at the time).

Thanks, Mel! I'm usually very good about keeping a level head against retrospective moralizing, but it's always helpful to have a reminder :)
My only real concern about reading older books is that they might feel dated and the language might take some getting used to. Honestly, I've had a bit of a slow start getting into this one, but I expect to find a groove once I get a handle on the style and get deeper into the story.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it, Virginia! I've only just started, but it's definitely an interesting read so far. I think I'll post some initial thoughts about it in a few hours :)

Hmm... for me, required reading in high school was Of Mice and Men and MacBeth, I can't remember any others if there were 😅

Those were on the list as well! Others I remember were 1984, “Animal Farm, “The Great Gatsby and “In Cold Blood
Geez! Thinking about it now, we had A LOT of required reading!
I think you will like “To Kill a Mockingbird.
My classic read for 2024 is “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
Don’t know what to expect but I’ve heard it’s really good!

Yeah, I guess my high school must not have been big on reading Lol
I suppose we focused more short stories and poetry 😅

I've never heard of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Hope you have a good time with it 😁👍

It's always interesting how other countries have other classics. Like in my country we had to read Shakespeare, Zweig, Dürrenmatt, Kafka, Nestroy, etc. I read most of the books you mentioned when I was out of school already. *lol*
My classic for the year is "Wuthering Heights". Very curious if I'll enjoy it. XD

I did a lot more reading in college. I took a course in my first year that was all novels and plays. In terms of German-language authors, I read Bertolt Brecht's Galileo and Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis.

Wishing you luck on that, Virginia! I've only read one novel from the Bronte sisters, Jane Eyre, actually in that same first-year literature class I mentioned.

Thank you very much! Happy to hear it's an all-timer for you 😁👍

Ohhh, “Wuthering Heights is one I haven’t read but need to read!
I heard it’s a fantastic story! I’ll be curious to see what you think, V!
It’s interesting to see your list of required readings!
I think no matter what country, we’re all doomed to read Shakespeare 😆😆😆

Yes, I had to read The Tempest as well in college. I guess theatre's really gone downhill since the Renaissance, you'd think there'd be some acceptable alternatives along the way 😅
