In biological terms, depression is no stranger than pneumonia or diabetes. Neither pneumonia, diabetes nor depression have anything to do with a lack of character, so chirpily encouraging someone who is depressed to 'pull themselves together� is just as absurd as saying to someone with pneumonia that they should ‘pull their lungs together� or that somebody with diabetes should ‘pull their blood sugar together�.

When we are exposed to long-term stress, we go around with constant high levels of cortisol in our blood, and our body eventually gets used to these levels. As a result, the body stops reacting to the cortisol, which thereby loses its ability to dampen inflammation. It’s like crying wolf too many times � in the end, no one cares.
