Frank J. Edwards The central plot device for my new thriller REAP is a medical device that is both bizarre and completely believable. In an early, early draft I just threw it in for comedic value. A beta reader pointed out the device's profound moral dimensions. That's when the book really took form and became serious.
Frank J. Edwards 1) I find things that deeply intrigue me and let ideas evolve through brainstorming sessions. 2) I get lucky. 3) Coffee shop writing sometimes helps.
Frank J. Edwards I'm putting together a new book of poems, taking my sweet time getting them as good as I can make them.
Frank J. Edwards One of the best pieces of writing advice I've ever received was to give yourself complete freedom to write god-awful rough drafts. Don't let your internal editor into the writing room until you've got a pile of crap to let him or her start rearranging.
Frank J. Edwards For me there's no greater pleasure than to conceive an idea and turn it into an artifact of words that will communicate that same sense to another human being--even more so when the artifact transmits meaning beyond what I'd originally intended.
Frank J. Edwards Writer's block is a symptom that has a number of causes. There's the drop dead block that comes from having pursued an idea that that just didn't have enough substance. You start off strong then it feels like to made wrong turn and are now stuck in a bog and it's getting dark and cold outside. The cure for that is to start fresh. Other causes range from fatigue to excessive distractions. Often, it's hard to tell from what the problem stems. What often does the trick for me is to put the work off to one side and have a brainstorming session, writing down what feels like a discussion being held by various internal voices, drilling down into where the story is going. Interesting ideas will pop up out of nowhere.
