In an early, early draft I just threw it in for comedic value. A beta reader pointed out the device's profound moral dimensions. That's when the book really took form and became serious. (less)

There's the drop dead block that comes from having pursued an idea that that just didn't have enough substance. You start off strong then it feels like to made wrong turn and are now stuck in a bog and it's getting dark and cold outside. The cure for that is to start fresh. Other causes range from fatigue to excessive distractions. Often, it's hard to tell from what the problem stems. What often does the trick for me is to put the work off to one side and have a brainstorming session, writing down what feels like a discussion being held by various internal voices, drilling down into where the story is going. Interesting ideas will pop up out of nowhere. (less)
