I was born in Hertfordshire, did most of my growing up in Sheffield, and went to Oxford University, where I studied the same course under the same tutors at the same college as David Cameron. He went on to become Prime Minister of Great Britain. I didn't.

As a kid I wrote terrible stories in small notebooks purchased from Woolworths. The first halfway decent stories I wrote were pastiches of Lord Dunsany in my early twenties, one of which, to my surprise, was accepted by the small press magazine Fantasy Tales, and subsequently appeared in the DAW Books anthology The Year's Best Fantasy Stories.
