The Secret of a Successful Sales Manager

A very interesting story I came across recently:
John was a very successful sales manager. After he had carefully interviewed and then selected a new salesman, he would take to the salesman to a Cadillac dealership and insist that he trade in his old car for a new Cadillac. The salesman would usually balk at the idea. He would be frightened of the cost of the car and the huge monthly payment involved. But the sales manager would insist that he buy the Cadillac as a condition of employment.
What do you think happened afterwards?
First, the salesman drove the car home. His wife almost had a heart attack when she saw that he had bought a new Cadillac. But after she had settled down, he would take her for a ride around the neighborhood in the new car. The neighbors would see them driving in a new Cadillac as he waved on the way past. He would park his new Cadillac in front of his house or in his driveway. People would come over and admire it. Gradually, imperceptibly, at a subconscious level, his attitude toward himself and his earning potential would begin to change.
Within a few days, he would begin to see himself as the kind of person who drove a new Cadillac. He would see himself as a big money earner in his field, one of the top performers in his industry. And time after time, almost without fail, the sales people in this organization became sales superstars. Their sales performance jumped and they earned more than they had ever before. Soon the payment of the new Cadillac was of no concern because the incomes were so much greater!

While the above story may or may not be true there is a point worth noting. Your success depends a lot on your self-image and belief in yourself. With a positive self-image and self-belief you are in a better position to take on new challenges. You feel you deserve to succeed! You do not hesitate to make a few mistakes because you have the confidence that you can take on things that come your way. You start trusting your judgements better and feel worthy! You get the kind of success which would not have been possible otherwise.
Below quotes sum it all:
Your chances of success in any undertaking can always be measured by your belief in yourself.” ~ Robert Collier
“The strongest single factor in prosperity consciousness is self-esteem: believing you can do it, believing you deserve it, believing you will get it. ~ Jerry Gillies
“You were not born a winner, and you were not born a loser. You are what you make yourself be. ~ Lou Holtz
“The tragedy is that so many people look for self-confidence and self-respect everywhere except within themselves, and so they fail in their search. ~ Dr. Nathaniel Branden
Let self-belief be your first secret to success!

Book Review: Stolen Hope by Shubha Vilas

Name of the Book Ramayana,The Game of Life Stolen Book
Author : Shubha Vilas
Edition / Year : 1 / 2016
Publisher: Jaico Publishing House
ISBN : 978-81-8495-824-9
Ramayana The Game of Life Stolen Hope

“Seek Courage when everything, including hope, is stolen.
The Stolen Hope is Book 3 of the 6 part Ramayana : The Game Of Life series by Shubha Vilas.
A book which is very relevant and applicable in today’s world where relationships fall faster than nine pins! I enjoyed reading this book.
The book applies the lessons from Ramayana in contemporary life. The insights (presented as footnotes on almost every page) are very useful in our day to day life, as well as helps us to understand people, life and relationships better.
Story and Plot:The story continues from where it was left in the last book: Shattered Dreams. There is a gist of the first two books in the beginning, which makes the reading seamless.Rama, Lakshman and Sita have arrived at Dandakaranya. The story continues, they start living in Panchvati and then the seed for the war between Rama and Ravana is sowed in the form Surpanakha's proposal; first to Rama and then to his brother Lakshman. The proposal ended with Lakshman cutting the nose and ears of Ravana's sister. She runs to her brother Khara for aid and revenge, who in turn orders fourteen commanders leading fourteen thousands demons to fight with Rama and Lakshman. Rama and Lakshman fought valiantly and then Rama ordered the other two to go away and he went to war single handedly. There was a massacre of demons and Khara and his men meet death. The news reaches to Ravana and then the planning to conquer Rama starts. With a brief history of Ravana the story moves on stealthily and Rama is urged to go after the golden dear who is actually Maricha. Then Sita urges Lakshman to go after Rama despite of his unwillingness after hearing her husband's cry.Ravana comes in form of sinister sage and he praises Ravana and belittle Rama, but Sita praises Rama instead which infuriates Ravana and he takes away Sita. Sita could only inform Jatayu about her abduction. Rama is informed about the abduction by dying Jatayu. Rama meets Shabri who tells them that only Vali can help him find Sita.
The strength of the book lies in the simple and lucid writing.
Overall this book is a lovely read!
Here is some key learning from the book for me:
Ideal life should be like sandwich. Flanked by hard serious bread like sides there has to be light fun filled stuffing. The stuffing ensures that the hard part of life are palatable and bearable.
Excellence is a by-product of persistently choosing quality over quantity.
To the degree a cheater is confident of cheating, to that degree he is also fearful of being cheated.
Any relationship is valued according to the type of memory it rekindles. The mind has the ability to connect what it has absorbed into what is being observed.

2016 - One year to Live!

At the beginning of the year I want to share an inspirational story I came across on the net. This story will help us in achieving the maximum in 2016. I wish you a happy and prosperous new year!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Anthony Burgess war 40 when he learned that he had only one year to live. He had a brain tumor that would kill him within a year. He know he had a battle on his hands. He was completely broke at the time, and he didn't have anything to leave behind for his wife, Lynne, soon to be a window.

Burgess had never been a professional novelist in the past, but he always knew the potential was inside him to be a writer. So, for the sole purpose of leaving royalties behind for his wife, he put a piece of paper into a typewriter and began writing. He had no certainty that he would even be published, but he couldn't think of anything else to do.

"It was January of 1960," he said, "and according to the prognosis, I had a winter and spring and summer to live through, and would die with the fail of the leaf."

In that time Burgess wrote energetically, finishing five and a half novels before the year wad through (very nearly the entire lifetime output of E.M. Forster, and almost twice that of J. D. Salinger.)

one year to live But Burgess did not die. His cancer had gone into remission and then disappeared altogether. In his long and full life as a novelist ( he is best known for A Clock-work Orange), he wrote more than 70 books, but without the death sentence from cancer, he may not have written at all.

Many of us are like Anthony Burgess, hiding greatness inside, waiting for some external emergency to bring it out. Ask yourself what you'd do if you had Anthony Burgess's original predicament. " If I had just a year to live, how would I live differently? What exactly would I do?"

Life Lessons from Folktales - 5

The Hare with Many Friends
(Aesop’s Fables)
A Hare was very popular with the other beasts who all claimed to be her friends. But one day she heard the hounds approaching and hoped to escape them by the aid of her many Friends. So, she went to the horse, and asked him to carry her away from the hounds on his back. But he declined, stating that he had important work to do for his master. ‘He felt sure, he said, ‘that all her other friends would come to her assistance. She then applied to the bull, and hoped that he would repel the hounds with his horns. The bull replied: ‘I am very sorry, but I have an appointment with a lady; but I feel sure that our friend the goat will do what you want. The goat, however, feared that his back might do her some harm if he took her upon it. The ram, he felt sure, was the proper friend to apply to. So she went to the ram and told him the case. The ram replied: ‘Another time, my dear friend. I do not like to interfere on the present occasion, as hounds have been known to eat sheep as well as hares. The Hare then applied, as a last hope, to the calf, who regretted that he was unable to help her, as he did not like to take the responsibility upon himself, as so many older persons than himself had declined the task. By this time the hounds were quite near, and the Hare took to her heels and luckily escaped.
Moral of the Story: He that has many friends has no friends.
Has something similar happened with you in your professional or personal world?
The story above has a very important lesson on building networks and relationships in personal as well as professional world.
Your success will depend a lot on the quality of network you build and not on the quantity!
And this is where most people fall short.
We often fail to make deep human connections. We don’t open up enough. We don’t share enough. We don’t follow up enough. We are not sensitive enough to others feelings and priorities. We don’t give first before asking for any help or favor.
An important part of building solid network and relationships is to share enough about you. When people know about you, what you’re good at, what connections you have, then they know how you might be able to help them. This then leads to a balanced relationship where people are not just seekers but active give and take. It always helps when you invest time and effort in building few meaningful relationships than just adding on to the number on your ‘just know list. Also to be effective at building solid relations you must be sensitive towards others feelings and priorities and try to help them as much as you can in reaching their goals.

Life Lessons from Folktales - 4

“The Lion's Share.
(Aesop's fable)
The Lion went once a-hunting along with the Fox, the Jackal, and the Wolf. They hunted and they hunted till at last they surprised a Stag, and soon took its life. Then came the question how the spoil should be divided. "Quarter me this Stag," roared the Lion; so the other animals skinned it and cut it into four parts. Then the Lion took his stand in front of the carcass and pronounced judgment: The first quarter is for me in my capacity as King of Beasts; the second is mine as arbiter; another share comes to me for my part in the chase; and as for the fourth quarter, well, as for that, I should like to see which of you will dare to lay a paw upon it.""Humph," grumbled the Fox as he walked away with his tail between his legs; but he spoke in a low growl.
Moral of Aesop's Fable: You may share the labors of the great, but you will not share the spoil. (Sounds like politics as usual.)
Now relate this story to what happens commonly in the corporate world -1. The idea you shared with a colleague over coffee gets mentioned in your team meeting as his/her original idea!2. You work hard and do overtime to finish a project and a colleague gets all the praises for the work done!3. You do an exceptional job of completing a tricky assignment and your boss tells the senior management that it was he who work worked all alone on that assignment!
Often in the corporate world, it is the most cunning or the most powerful person (compare him to lion in the above story) who ends up taking all the credit for the good work.
Sadly, you can never assume that you would actually get credit for your work. You cannot assume that you will get your share of rewards and recognitions.
This is something you must ensure.
Given below are few simple things you can do to ensure your efforts get the due rewards and recognitions:1. Never share your ‘great ideas with one person only. It is best to share these ideas in a meeting or during a presentation where seniors and your colleagues are present.2. When working in a team, try to distinguish yourself from the rest of team. You can do so by focusing on your strengths. If you are great at giving presentations or writing an article you can leverage on these strengths to make yourself considered a ‘valuable member of the team.3. Be proactive to ensure you get your due credit. In collaborative assignments it makes sense to reach an agreement with other team members on keys aspects of credit sharing. Such agreed points should be documented and shared with all team members.4. Keep sending regular updates of your good work to your seniors and other key decision makers in your organization. This way you will avoid any unwanted situation towards the end of the project/assignment you are working on.5. Be generous and transparent is giving credits to others for the good work that they do. This way, others will also be obliged to give you due credit for your work.
