Sam Blake has been writing fiction since 1999 when her husband went sailing across the Atlantic for 8 weeks and she had an idea for a book.

Her debut novel 'Little Bones' (Bonnier 2016) was a runaway bestseller. Across all her books Sam has been an Eason No 1 bestseller an Irish Times No 1 and shortlisted for the Irish Book Awards (in the crime or teen categories) five times. 2023 saw her multiple award shortlisted YA debut Something Terrible Happened Last Night hit the shelves. In 2024 Something's About to Blow Up won Irish Teen/YA Book of the Year.

I'm an aspiring writer, but I'm dealing with two things: I get discouraged every single day because 96% of manuscripts are rejected, and I haven't had an idea for years, literally. There's too many people wanting to be writers, and knowing there's so much competition just kills me a little every day. When I get motivated, immediatly something appears about the industry that kills it. Any tips on how to deal with this?

You have to write for you, not for anyone else, don't worry about getting rejected before you've started, your book could be the most amazing thing for years - there are loads of people wanting to be writers, but very few who actually finish a first draft and who then put the real work in polishing it. Ideas come when you open your mind - don't put yourself underpressure, it might take 6 months for bits of ideas to arrive. They won't come as finished ideas, they come as bits of ideas and it's you putting them together and thinking on them that makes a story. I've tons of help for new writers on and a new set of courses on my own site . Good luck!
