“At 33, writer and blogger Goldfarb finds herself unemployed and back living at home with her parents, humorously revisiting her innumerable misadventures along the way…Goldfarb’s questionable level of maturity may not have made her a fully formed adult just yet, but her winning ability to share her tales of bad judgment without a filter makes it easy to root for her.
Publishers Weekly
As a barely employed, Ivy League-educated, 61 Jewish woman in her thirties who lives at home with her parents, Anna Goldfarb has trouble meeting guys. Besides being overeducated and underemployed, Anna is a “late bloomer with a penchant for hooking up with shorter dudes (anyone north of 57, Anna is not interested) and she’s unfortunately impressed by “the worst things ever, so navigating the minefield of dating does not come easy to her. With her unique voice and witty humor, Philadelphia-based blogger Anna Goldfarb shares the hysterical and mortifying situations she has found herself in as she moves back home, puts up with her overbearing Jewish mother who has the local police on speed dial, and tries to grow up all while trying to meet a cute, shorter dude who doesn’t kill her boner.
Clearly, I Didn’t Think This Through: The Story of One Tall Girl’s Impulsive, Ill-Conceived, and Borderline Irresponsible Life Decisions is the hilarious account of trying to grow up when you are not quite ready to do so. Having been terrorized by an armful of pamphlets in college warning her of the dangers of New York City life, Goldfarb didn’t date much in her twenties. Now in her thirties, Anna finds herself more interested in where she will score tonight’s beer money and getting her kicks with tech-savvy nerds than settling down and finding a husband. Besides, it’s hard for guys to take her seriously when she still has Michael J. Fox posters tacked up on her bedroom wall. Goldfarb writes, “maturity use to be something I aspired to, but as a woman in my thirties, I wear it like an ill-fitting sweater that I’ve flung in the corner, hoping one day that I would pick it up and it would magically fit better. But it hasn’t.
Case in point: Have you ever spent the night at a guy (who you just met an hours ago)’s house only to find his dogs chewing on your used feminine products that you had secretly stashed in his garbage? Or hit on a guy dressed as FDR for Halloween and fawning over his “awesome costume, not realizing he actually needed the wheelchair? Or followed a drunk, rich guy around town late at night in hopes that he’d buy you a fancy sandwich? Or been ditched by a guy at 8am on a Saturday for a game of Dungeons and Dragons? Anna shares her quirky episodes of making her way through the world, and clearly, not thinking things through.
Clearly, I Didn’t Think This Through showcases Goldfarb’s witty, funny, and intelligent voice. It’s a voice that women can relate to, whether they’ve struggled with finding romance, wrestled with career paths, or have had a judgmental family who felt free to voice their opinions about a guy you spent the night with on a whim. Anna’s adulthood isn’t what she imagined it would be, but her story sends the message that sometimes, that’s perfectly okay.
