I've finally made it through my mammoth re-read of the 3 series and I'm only two days behind schedule!

I feel sad at the end of this one. Not for Fitz, for once, but for me. There isn't another installment to race on to and I'm nowhere near ready to part with this world. I never really like epilogues, and this was no exception. It seemed like all my favorite characters lives were racing by and I just wanted it all to slow down.

I'm also feeling a bit torn here. The third book of a Hobb trilogy always seems to start out so stinking slowly, but I feel a bit traitorous to rate this a 4 when I love i ...more

A bittersweet ending to such an epic series. But after reading two trilogies from Robin Hobb, I've learned to expect that the ending will be disappointing. I didn't find the ending disappointing because it wasn't a good ending but it's because of how harsh Hobb treats her heroes after spending three long books persuading readers to love them.
In the Farseer trilogy, Hobb took us through all the ups and downs of Fitz's earlier years. Many times he was used as a tool for the good of his family, ma A bittersweet ending to such an epic series. I didn't find the ending disappointing because it wasn't a good ending but it's because of how harsh Hobb treats her heroes after spending three long books persuading readers to love them.
In the Farseer trilogy, Hobb took us through all the ups and downs of Fitz's earlier years. Many times he was used as a tool for the good of his family, many times he suffered both physically and mentally then get rescued just to be used and tortured again. Even in death, he was still brought back to life just be tortured again. And after all that sacrifice and suffering, you'd think that Hobb will give her hero a happy ending but no, he spent the rest of his life in solitude with his wife and daughter being snatched away from him.
Then came the Tawny man trilogy which took place fifteen years later. You'd think that yay, Fitz can finally have his happy ending, which in a way he did. But the Tawny man trilogy is as much Fitz's story as it is the Fool's story and what the Fool went through so just so much worse than Fitz. He spent his entire life working toward fulfilling his prophesy to make the world a better place. He walked into his death knowing how painful and torturous it would be and bravely faced it he did. And what did he get in the end? No one gave his sacrifice a single thought. No one bothered going back to find his body. No one but Fitz, which was reasonable since Fitz was the only one mattered anyway. But after spending three books building up the relationship better Fitz and the Fool. You'd think that they would end up to together, or if the Fool were to die, Fitz would mourn him for the rest of his life. But no, the Fool had to be brought back to life just to be parted from Fitz forever. They didn't even get a proper goodbye. And Fitz just moved on with his life as if the Fool was never there. I found the poem the Fool left for Fitz very heartbreaking. Yet Fitz read it twice and went about his errand. I'd expect that Fitz will analyze every single word then set out to search the whole world until he finds the Fool again. But no, he spent his effort getting back to Molly instead. Why is Molly even in the picture to begin with? Sixteen years had passed and whatever between Fitz and Molly should be just the past. Fitz and the Fool should be the present and future. But no, Fitz went to pursue Molly with his boyhood passion, which was given back to him by the Fool, how ironic is that? Everyone got their happy ending except for the Fool. The Fool lost his beloved, he's no longer a prophet as he had no more prophesy to fulfill. In a way, the Fool's ending is as sad as Fitz's ending in the Farseer series. He accomplished what he set out to do but at what price? What did he get in return?
At least the next Fitz and the Fool series will out in August and I'm crossing my fingers hoping that the two heroes will finally get their true happy ending this time.

This book will take your breath away. Absolutely BRILLIANT! One of the most cherished books I own/ have read.

I love this book! It is filled of so much action, drama, heartbreak, beauty and happiness.

I must admit I was somewhat disappointed with the ending, but in many ways I understand why the author wrote it so. Especially considering that there is another trilogy after this one called "The Fitz and the Fool" (written 11 years after Tawny Man trilogy). I think many readers, who read this book b ...more

Loved it. I liked how the big hooha was in the middle and the rest more a loose ends tied up. I liked Fitz back with molly and winning over the kids and grandkids. The fool and fitz did make me sad but also made sense. Fitz needed time to be like a normal man and woo Molly.
