Hello Ms. Romero! I'm currently reading The Ghosts of Rose Hill and I wanted to ask, how difficult is it to write in poetry? How do you write in poetry? Did the communists really use matzevot's to build sidewalks? Did you ever visit Prague? It feels like I'm there just reading about it! Thanks, good luck with your next book!
R.M. Romero
THE GHOSTS OF ROSE HILL was a challenge! It took me about six months to write because with poetry, every word is important. I always read poetry and loved it, so I thought a lot about my favorite poets (ee cummings, Sylvia Plath, Rainer Maria Rilke, Richard Siken) and reread their work as I drafted the book.
Using matzevot as building materials was unfortunately very common throughout Eastern and Central Europe after WW2. Just like in the book, the main square of Prague is indeed partially made from Jewish headstones.
I visited Prague for a week in 2017 with my sister. It’s a truly magical city.
Thank you! My next book, A WARNING ABOUT SWANS, is now out in the world.

Wasserman must've been pretty powerful to survive Bavarian hunters. Why did he stay there at all? I don't think he was bound; he made a big deal out of being bound. Was he trying to spite the hunters by staying there, given he was at the height of his power?
I really do not want to imagine an amoral vodnik whose prefered snack is souls and tea who, when starving, could do all he did in the book.

Are Ghosts of Rose Hill and A Warning About Swans set in the same world? Wasserman explicitly mentions how in Bavaria, the creatures of fairy tales were all hunted. Richter seems to be participating in this Bavarian tradition in A Warning About Swans, it lines up pretty well.
