Aw Rinn! :/ You and I need to have a catch up in the New Year ok? :D
Is it work and stuff or just one of those ebb and flow things? I sometimes find that reading a few smaller books, or particularly for younger readers can help :)
I have literally just got back home from legging it down to the delivery office before it shut - my only opportunity to grab the last present that needs wrapping before seeing the family member it's for!

Yes, we do!
I think it's partly burn out from Sci-Fi Month. I'm really behind on commenting on my friends' blogs too... I reckon I'll take your advice, I was thinking of doing that - I have my eye on the new Patrick Ness book =)
When are you off back home?

It is a good plan :) I've started The Ship Who Sang, which is nice and small as I have just finished a thick one and I have another think one to start soon enough :) I also have about 4 reviews to catch up on as I have had no time as such for that! Shocking thought! :O
Oh I know - I honestly did try to keep up with reading everything during Sci-fi month, but I just couldn't keep up - where's all this student free time lark we used to have? :P
Getting super excited - seeing the family tomorrow evening :) I swear even when I'm 100 I'll still be super excited for Christmas! Doing anything fun yourself?

I feel the same way, I haven't been able to sit and read more than 50 pages at a time, unfortunately I know exactly why it is, it's Christmas... Four years ago Christmas was by far my favorite holiday and with a healthy one year old, Connor, should have only become a better holiday. Then 2010 came and I had a baby boy named Logan, Logan had poly-cystic kidney disease and for those that don't know the outcome of that is pretty much terrible. Logan lived 2.5 months.
Cue 2012, the Friday before Christmas my wife finds out she's pregnant and my baby, Claire, was diagnosed with the same thing. She also lived only 2.5 months, passing away on October 1st. Needless to say Christmas is a hard time, actually every day is a hard day, but I try to hold it together because my son is now 4 (almost 5) and is super excited for Christmas.
Sorry to bring this thread down, but if I don't get things like this off my chest when I think them it just makes life too hard. :(

Roger, that's terrible for you and your wife :( I can see why Christmas is such a hard time for you both, though admittedly it is nigh on impossible for anyone who hasn't gone through something like that to really understand what it is like. I hope the two of you at least have a restful Christmas - at least as restful as Christmas with a 4 year old can be!
The thing about reading is it should be enjoyable, and if you are finding it hard to read - just take a break, do other things, and the desire to read will eventually come back as it does :)

I just want to relax... I know my health problems are stress related and this isn't helping at all.
I got my younger brother a copy of Ender's Game for Christmas. He's 11 and soon to be 12 in February, and generally doesn't read a lot. I hope he enjoys it. >_<;
it can be interesting/difficult trying to find books for infrequent readers :) I think I managed successes with Harry Potter and His Dark Materials trilogy. what do others normally recommend to those who do like to read much? particularly not really fans of sf and fantasy. does it vary on the age, or do you go with something generally easy and rainbow for any age?
Thanks Freya, that's definitely a good way to look at it, I actually got a lot of reading done over the weekend and am gearing up for the challenge. I have two books sitting on my shelf just waiting for the challenge to start.
Glorious sunshine after the past few days of mildly alarming weather - mince pies and sausage rolls to be created today :) Hope you all have a great Christmas! :)
Oh yes the dusting, hoovering, dishwasher, bed-making was done this morning and the decking the halls with boughs of holly was yesterday :)
I confess I was thinking the exact same thing this morning - not sure whether to be appalled or amused at myself! :D
Merry Christmas to you too! 80D
I'm reading The Ghostly Grammar Boy by Sandra Thompson at the moment. It's really good. I deffo recommend it.
Hope everyone had a good Christmas!
I've been rubbish reading this month's books. About a third through Locke Lamora and haven't really started Dune... my plan is to get through them after my current book. I had a funny reading slump, I just wasn't feeling like reading any big books, so I read a few YA novels which helped =)

Christmas had actually gotten in the way of reading - I thought " great time off work. can read loads" - nope! too busy catching up with people :)

I just discovered the GR listopia for that list!
Been the gym today with my sister.
A gym is a good place to set a fantasy or sci-fi story because of the different possibilities. Like, when you're on the treadmill, it feels like everybody(including yourself)and everything is going forward even the floor, so you can imagine walking/jogging/running through space

Firstly sorry if I've posted in the wrong section, I'm new to the group.
I've just joined good reads in the hope I can find some new inspiration, I love sci-fi fantasy but am struggling to find anything that takes my fancy at the moment.
I'll probably give The two books for January a go but if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I tend to lean more towards fantasy (Tolkien, Peter V Brett, Stephen Ericson etc) but will also read sci-fi.
Thanks
Marc
Hi Marc
I've not been here very long either.
I like fantasy and sci-fi.
Do you like anything by Terry Brooks? He's a favourite of mine

I've not heard of him before. I'll have a look into it. Is there a particular book or series to start with?

You want to start that series with the Sword of Shannara trilogy, it has a compilation The Sword of Shannara Trilogy
Or start the first of that series The Sword of Shannara
Also consider novels by Branden Sanderson, he has a lot of great books out there.

That sounds cool :) I am rubbish at it and am usually there with someone who can answer their phone and randomly lob the bowling ball done the alley and knock everything down in sight without even paying attention... it's not fair! :D

I want to read the Mistborn Trilogy and since it seems that it's going to be botm in february it's a great opportunity. Well now to my question because I'm a little bit confused. I own a kindle so I prefer the ebook version, but the real page number (850) of the Mistborn Trilogy seems kind of weird. Especially since the paperback trilogy Mistborn Trilogy Boxed Set has about 2200 pages and here on goodreads there's also an ebook version with about 2300 pages. Where does the difference come from? Is it an error or maybe is it shortened? Has anyone bought the ebook from amazon so far and can help me?
I wouldn't know, however I don't think that 850 pages is really correct as I have just finished reading The Well of Ascension and that was about 600-700 alone! The ones in the two thousands certainly sounds more realistic as it then places each book at approx 700 pages or something. However I am not a kindle person so perhaps others would be more qualified to comment... do you have links to them?

The number of pages actually changed to 1000 since I wrote my last post here. But that's still way too little. I'm talking about that should contain the first three books (it's the german amazon page, but the english ebook). And its page number comes from . I think that the number of pages is just false, because I read a lot of reviews (good and bad ones) and never found anything that would suggest, that this editions are somehow shortened - so I just bought it :)

unfortunately not. That's what I was looking for :) I also checked the reviews on amazon.com and the only thing about missing pages I found, was about a mass market paperback edition that wasn't printed right.

thank you, that would be great :)

The Final Empire - 643
The Well of Ascension - 781
The Hero of Ages - 748
it is a bookshelf for catalogues, but I have snuck the odd book or three on it
