Mike Robbins (mikerobbins) | 19 comments Reading The Tide: A Peace Corps volunteer living in the aftermath of Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army; also The Collected Stories of Elizabeth Bowen.

One is on Kindle and can be read with one hand on the subway. The other is literally heavier so I'm reading it in bed.

Painted Bridge sounds horrific! What was redeeming about it?

message 8: by Louise (new)

Louise I'm reading Every Eye by Isobel English by Isobel English - very enjoyable. I'm listening to Talking it over by Julian Barnes, and really enjoying it.

message 11: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I am around, just not been reading much as I have had a bad case of thinking I liked a book and it turned out I didn't. Then there is my eldest son who wanted to move to Scotland and now isn't and my fridge/freezer blowing up and having to fork out £100 (GBP) for a new fridge lol.

On a good note, I am reading Exquisite Betrayal - A.M. Hargrove which I am enjoying.

message 12: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Since I last posted on here I have read Daughter by Jane Shemilt (got 25% into it and gave up as it was getting so many twists and turns).

Then read Exquisite Betrayal by A.M. Hargrove (which I absolutely loved)

Then I've been reading Dirty Nights, Part One by Emerson St.Clair & Dirty Nights Part Two by Emerson St. Clair (which I am finding rather intriguing with the way the characters are a mess in their heads and stuff), I'm reading Dirty Nights Part Three by Emerson St. Clair at the moment.

CD | 1577 comments I am starting The Mission Song by John le Carré.

One of le Carré's post cold war stories.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Just coming to the end of The Luminaries it's a very long book, beautifully written, you really feel you are being transported to that time and place. The astrology is wasted on me, maybe it has more meaning to others. If you like a mystery then do pick it up.

message 24: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) This morning I finished and reviewed The Billion Dollar Bad Boy - Jackie Ashenden. I am now going to read The Billionaire Biker - Jackie Ashenden.

message 30: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1680 comments I think I should read that sometime, Barb. I'm not sure I've ever read any of the series!

message 31: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1680 comments I finished Night Film - I liked the premise better than the execution. The suspense did keep me reading far past my bedtime, though.
I want to read the second Fairyland book soon.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Just started reading 1Q84.

message 33: by Kajah (new)

Kajah | 9 comments Hey Gail, have you read much of Murakami's other works? Ive read almost everything of his and 1Q84 was the first one that disappointed me, and I read it to the very end. Then again I love loved Kafka on the Shore and many people despise that novel even among Murakami's readers. Take that for what it's worth I guess :)

message 34: by Kajah (new)

Kajah | 9 comments I just finished This Boy's Life by Tobias Wolff and am currently reading...well I'm reading any things but I'd like to put a dent in some of these three Simon Schama books I have.

Kafka on the Shores is the only one I have read. I plan to read more. Still early days with 1Q84. I am enjoying it do far.

Persevere. I think it is really worth it. If you have someone who can tell you about the links with traditional Japanese and Shinto mythology it will make a lot more sense. Badgers and cats do not appear randomly in this book! I'll not say more now.

message 37: by CD (new)

CD | 1577 comments I have just started reading The Nazi Officer's Wife: How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust. This is next month's book club selection.

I've got a few re-reads going on too.

message 39: by Kajah (new)

Kajah | 9 comments Rereading Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco. This is one of those titles I always come back to and read little portions of out of sequence. Right now I'm starting from the dense overture chapter where Causabon madly wanders through the museum. This opening chapter has scared off many a potential reader and lead people to see Eco as something as an intellectual show off, which is unfair.

Carol | 1680 comments I just started Eat Move Sleep: How Small Choices Lead to Big Changes - I won it in a GR giveaway.

message 41: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) I'm reading Someone by Alice McDermott for my library book group.

I am about 30% in and find the writing amazing. The story is quiet and reflective.

message 42: by Alias Reader (new)

Alias Reader (aliasreader) Today I finished
Someone by Alice McDermott Someone by Alice McDermott

The novel is very well written. I would give the writing style a 4 rating. The plot a 3. It's a quiet novel that is comprised of a series of non-linear , somewhat melancholy, memories of young girl as she grows into adulthood.

My next read is
Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple

I've read about 50 pages and so far I am loving it.

The story is mostly told through letters. It's quite funny.
