Hi everyone, as group moderation is new to me, I did not start with an "introduce yourself" discussion so am a bit late with this. As we add new members, I think it would be great to share a little bit about ourselves.

My name is Susan. I live in Southern Ontario and am an avid reader. I work in healthcare by day and spend my free time reading and blogging (and talking) about books. I especially enjoy author events and collect signed novels. I love Canadian Literature and my favourite genre is historical fiction but I love reading recommendations which stretch outside my usual book choices.

I belong to a great book club with other busy mom's and enjoy our varied book choices and great discussion.

Here is a link to my blog:

So nice to formally meet you both and enjoying the discussions!!!

Petra | 706 comments Hi, I'm Petra, from the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. I live just outside of Vancouver.
Besides reading, I enjoy cooking, crossword & Sudoku puzzles, gardening, jogging, tai-chi and longer walks. I also work in healthcare.
I enjoy a wide variety of genres but not romance. When I was a kid, I really enjoyed the thicker books and I still migrate towards the longer novels. I like a light read as much as a deep, heavy read.

Fantastic - great to meet you both from BC!! I have never been west of Ontario but it is on my bucket list to travel to all the provinces and territories. After reading Minister Without Portfolio, i need to get to NFLD as well (the only province East of Ontario that we have missed).

message 7: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1171 comments I totally want to visit Newfoundland one day. And maybe time it at the same time as a book festival such as this one:

Petra | 706 comments I'll join you all on the Maritimes tour. That's on my bucket list, too.
I'm glad we have this thread. It's nice to hear where everyone is from.

Me too - it would be great to have a whole network of book lovers from every province and territory! That festival looks fantastic Louise!

message 10: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2117 comments Hi all. My name is Allison -- I "know" some of the other members from another group.

I'm a science writer (who used to work in healthcare as a project manager) and have a busy life with five kids at home ages 6-16. However, whenever I can, I sneak in some reading. I can listen to audio books while I'm working, depending on the project, and sometimes in the evening, if my eyes aren't automatically closing, I try to spend some time with a paper book.

I love Canadian literature, but of course, read anything. Like Susan, I'm a proud owner of a Little Free Library, just outside Kingston, Ontario.

message 11: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1171 comments Welcome Allison!! I don't know how you manage to get any reading done with 5 kids. Wow.

I hope to start a LFL one day, if my town can change it's stupid ordinances.

message 12: by Allison (new)

Allison | 2117 comments @Louise, I didn't even look into my LFL was allowed. We just put it up! Ha! One more has popped up in our little community since. So far so good.

And my approach with kids is to try to make them readers too! I'm not saying it always works, but hanging out together reading sometimes allows me to get some in! They also know that all Mummy wants is a quiet afternoon to read, so every mother's day, birthday, Christmas gift includes being left alone with a book! :)

Welcome Allison - it seems we have a few things in common, the LFL, a large family (but I only have 4 kids who range from 9 to 18) and working in health care - not to mention a love for canadian fiction!!

I too have tried to inspire reading and so far:
1 loves non-fiction (national geographic and similar)
1 is reluctant
2 youngest love reading

In fact, i am a bit sad that my 9 year old doesn't want us to read him stories any longer - happy that he wants to read independently but miss story time!!

Susan | 851 comments Hello. I see some familiar faces in this group. :-)

I'm Susan, originally from Toronto, currently living in New Orleans. I love Canadian literature and get overly excited about book awards in general, but particularly the Giller and Canada Reads.

I am a big fan of libraries and Little Free Libraries. There are three LFLs in our immediate neighbourhood and I haunt each of them, probably contributing more to them than I take from them, which is just fine. I get excited when I add a book to a LFL and then see that it's gone a few days later.

message 18: by Petra (new)

Petra | 706 comments Hi Susan! It must be fun to have that many LFL in your neighbourhood. We don't have them in our neighbourhood. I'd be thrilled to see one.
I get excited when I donate books for the library sale and see them gone on my next visit. It's nice to think that the books will be enjoyed further.

We check ours daily!! I hope you enjoy our group - we are all Canadian Literature lovers!!!

@Petra - I am happy to share my experience if you are interesting in hosting your own!! :)

Nice to see you here Susan!!!! I hope all the previous CBC members will join us. This is a wonderful group. No hand slapping and military style moderation. Susan does a fantastic job!

Awe... thanks Louise! I hope we get a robust group going to spur on more great conversations and am open to suggestions for a group that meets everyone's needs. As much as i got in a bit of hot water with my Candy Palmater interview post, i really enjoy the CBC group and all the great information!

I think that links to blogs and other information will only increase interest and promote a love of books!!

✿✿✿M | 672 comments Hi everyone, so happy to be joining this group.
I'm 50 from Markham, Ontario, currently working full-time in the government and mother to 2 teenage boys. I love reading, traveling, running, and yoga.
My reading interests are mostly fictions of different genres. Historical fictions are my first love, followed by mysteries and thrillers. Stuff I don't typically read are short stories, poetry and self-help/motivational books.
Thanks to Heather for directing me to this group.

Natasha Penney | 563 comments Hello everyone! So happy to see familiar faces!!

I'm from central Newfoundland originally, where I worked as a newspaper editor. (So I can be a fantastic source of information for those who want to turn their eastern journey Atlantic as opposed to Maritime and add NL to the itinerary!) I'm now living in Halifax. I am a voracious reader (though my intentions do occasionally outstrip time) who likes pretty much everything, though I'm partial to history, politics, historical fiction, mystery and thrillers. I've also developed a passion for Canadian authors. I am devoted to my two nieces and though only four and two, I am dedicated to turning them into lifelong readers!

Sounds like an exciting trip but alas... no trips for me as my daughter is going to a swim meet in Ireland so she is getting to go on an exciting trip instead of my husband and I who will be celebrating our 20th anniversary with a staycation... lol

yes - I am excited for her and will be happy to have some downtime at home this summer. She is going to have an amazing time with her team, going away 12 and comes home on her 13th birthday! She is a reader too which makes me very happy!

Allison ༻hikes the bookwoods༺ (allisonhikesthebookwoods) | 1781 comments Hi everyone! I'm from eastern Newfoundland and I'm a bona fide book nerd. I'm a CPA and spend my days analyzing business and taxation matters. It balances out my extracurricular activities of reading, writing, and running a book club quite nicely!

I have two children (ages 5 and 8) so I'm pretty invested in children's literature as well as adult. My favourite genres are historical fiction, mystery and thriller, and the occasional bit of chick lit.

Naomi | 4 comments Hi! I'm really happy to have found this group right after learning about the CBC group shutting down. So sad. I'm a 40-something from Nova Scotia with 3 school-aged kids. I love CanLit and blog about it when I can at consumedbyink.ca (as well as any other books I read). Looking forward to being a part of this group!

message 44: by Barbara (new)

Barbara McEwen (babsbookobsession) | 215 comments I was also searching for where all the CBC group ended up! I feel as if I have been wandering the prairies but I currently live in Calgary with my husband, my 4-year old son, and my two lovely cats. I am an environmental scientist but I love reading and don't have many friends to chat with about books. I love all kinds of genres and read a lot of Can lit.

Kelsi H (kelsih) | 1 comments Hi everyone, glad to see many here from the old group. I live on Vancouver Island in BC, and part time on nearby Hornby Island where I make and sell my handmade jewellery. My day job is as a bookkeeper, but my real love is reading, especially Canadian Lit. Looking forward to some great discussions here :)

message 47: by CluckingBell (new)

CluckingBell | 16 comments Hello, another CBC Books evacuee here. I'm in Washington State and listened to Canada Reads a few years in a row, tuning in to a Saskatchewan station via dodgy AM reception that only came in after dark. Then I realized I hadn't read a single Canadian author as an English major here in the US and decided to remedy that. I'm prone to lurking! (Online, not in my neighbors' bushes.)

message 48: by ❀ Susan (new)

@Barbara and Kelsi - welcome, great to have some more representation from the West!

@CluckingBell - happy to have you join from the south!

Glad to "meet" you call here!

message 49: by Diane (new)

Diane (Tvor) | 357 comments Ohh so glad this new group was created! I, too, am a CBC Books "orphan". I'm Diane from Halifax, NS. I'm a lifelong reader and usually have 3 or 4 books on the go at any given time. I mainly use a Kobo ereader but sometimes paper books as well. I was never specifically a canadian author reader but since joining the "Group That Shall Not Be Named" ;) I have been reading more Canadian content. I like to read a lot of different genres. Historical fiction is one of my favourites and over the past 10 years, have started to really enjoy crime novels. I like "chick lit/women's fiction" and i know that's not very politically correct anymore but I haven't found a good phrase to replace it with. I like general fiction, biographies, books about British History and sometimes other history. That's normally about the extent of my non-fiction reading as a rule.

I also love to travel and photography is a hobby as well. I love living here on the East Coast even if the changeable weather makes me grumble. We have a beautiful new central Library here and I've started to borrow e-books from the library as well as my To Be Read list grows and grows!
