Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hello and welcome to team Kate Daniels!

Now, who here does not know where the character is from? If you don't know Kate, and by extension Curran, you should really remedy that right away and go read the series! It is fantastic! Not only does it have a great world setting, but it has awesome characters, good plots, a lovely romance and the writing in general is just awe-inspiring.

Enough gushing for now though ;-)

When you're checking into the thread, if you could all please post a link to your Uno shelves that would be great, thanks!

Please also make sure that you know what to do for each card - you can find the explanation to the cards in the general info on the challenge.

The link to the spreadsheet is in the first post, if you already want to have a look at our first hands for the month of February.

If you have questions, feel free to ask! :-)

Annika | 1412 comments Hi everyone!

What are you talking about E? We're not allowed to gush over Curran? I'm on the wrong team! ;)

message 9: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Lol, feel free to gush as much as you want, Annika!! I was just talking about myself ;-) I could go on and on and on haha.

message 10: by Lauri (last edited Jan 22, 2017 10:34PM) (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments Aloha everyone! I'm Lauri from Hawaii & I'm so excited to be here! I saw names posted this morning about 2:30am (Hawaii time), but then they all magically disappeared!

I have not read any Kate Daniels yet, but they are on my TBR list...

I played UNO last year & had a blast! Fun fact: I have never actually played a real game of UNO in my life yet...
Can't wait to start!!

I still can't do the link thing yet, but my shelf is uno 2017

message 11: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hello and welcome, Lauri!

No worries about the shelf, I should be able to find it with the name :-)

Uno is quite fun actually! The more people playing, the better, and it's lovely for people like Annika, who like to let their evil side rule ;-) You can make people draw lots and lots of cards hehe.

As for Kate Daniels - absolutely push that upwards on your list. Such a good series! :-D

message 12: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments Hi Lauri!

Nice to meet you again :)

And I totally agree with E, you need to read the Kate Daniels books, they are great! Well, the first one isn't the best, but trust me, keep going and you won't regret it!

E - what do you mean I'm evil? I'm obviously the nicest person around.

Don't I always try to add to your TBR, and give you more great books to read ;)

message 13: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Lol, you sure do!! That's why I need to join Karen's "Cleaning Out Your TBR Closet" challenge :-p

message 16: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments ummm, maybe I should say no comments to that? ;)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments Eldarwen wrote: "Lol, you sure do!! That's why I need to join Karen's "Cleaning Out Your TBR Closet" challenge :-p"

But you need to more than just join... you need to read books from your list too... LOL!

message 18: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Lol, right! I knew there was something I was forgetting about that ;-)

I'll do my best! I promise that I'll read more than just 2 off of that list this year! :-)

message 19: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments I'm trying to read 2 off my closet list per month. My problem is then I go and request a whole bunch of new books from NetGalley :o

message 20: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Lol! Well at least then the TBR remains sort of balanced. For every book you read, you add at least one new one ;-)

It's not a bad way of doing it though, 2 books per month... The thing is that I've put a lot of books on that list I'm not in the mood for at the moment. Though I'll read one in February for sure and that's The Black Prism. A fat 700 page book :-D I love his writing, so I'm happy to finally pick this one up.

message 21: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments I hate starting huge books, for some reason they just seem too long, so I rarely read books >600 pages

message 22: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments I'm the same Annika. I seem to have a mental blockage about reading books over 500/600 pages. I really need to be in the right mood, or be doing it for book club, or have the audio.
I just get bored too easily I think. I like shorter books as they keep my attention more

Sally906 | 611 comments Hi Eldarwen - just popping in to see your new stomping ground.

Kate is a great character

message 24: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (last edited Jan 23, 2017 01:28AM) (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments I've not read anything by that author E. You'll have to let me know if it is worth the time investment!

Annika | 1412 comments Karen ⊰✿ wrote: "I've not read anything by that author E. You'll have to let me know if it is worth the time investment!"

I've read 2 books, but I realised that I'm not a huge high fantasy fan.
(And this is the point where we talk *very, very* quietly about Durzo Blint and The Way of Shadows not making the team cuts....)

message 26: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments They do look a little daunting at times, but that one made me squeal like a little girl when I took it out of the box and realised it was that fat!!

Sometimes a large book is just exactly what I want to hold in my hands. Though I do enjoy the shorter ones, too. 350ish pages is always a good size, I find.

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Karen ⊰✿ wrote: "I've not read anything by that author E. You'll have to let me know if it is worth the time investment!"

Oh, absolutely try his Night Angel trilogy! Starting with The Way of Shadows. I loved that trilogy! It has a TON of characters, so be warned, it's tough keeping track at first, but the characters are absolutely wonderful.

Sallyyyyyy :-))

message 29: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments I'm not a big High Fantasy reader either, but I've been trying to expand myself a little as I have read quite a few good ones over the last few years!
There's also just the physical discomfort of holding a large book - I prefer them on my kindle lol

message 30: by Lauri (new)

Lauri (otwlauri) | 935 comments I love those chunkster books, but it's hard to slide them into challenges with time constraints. I'm re-reading The Far Pavillions this year. I think it has like 900+ pages. I'll be lucky if I finish by the end of the year!

message 31: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Lol Annika - Durzo Blint totally deserves being a team name! He's awesome :-D
Maybe next year? ;-)

message 32: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments Eek! And you're re-reading it Lauri! Nice one

I do intend to read The Count of Monte Cristo this year. I just need to wait until I have the right mood ;)

message 33: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments I did put him on the possible list, but then he was sorted out.
- Don't hate us ;)

You never know what we'll come up with next year - stay tuned

Wow, that is a doorstop! Since you're re-reading it though, it must be good? :-)

Definitely hard to slide them into challenges, but I still try from time to time, just because. I read too many short books last year to fill tasks quicker for challenges and it has really soured my taste in short books (anything below 250 pages).

Star Wars :-p
Hasn't that been settled already in the pre-challenge chat?? ;-)

message 36: by Karen ⊰✿, Avaricious Reader (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments I figure if we bring Tower Teams back this year I can read my chunksters then for big points. Teehee

Ooooh yes! I do want to read that one, too, but it's definitely something you have to be in the mood for. I once watched the French movie adaptation which was (according to my mother) very close to the book and it was fantastic!! Long-winded for sure, but very, very good.

Annika | 1412 comments The only way I can make it though the bricks is by listening to the audios - they forces me through the books =P

Oooh, you mean that it's you that decides the teams.
Did we know this Karen? ;)

Karen ⊰✿ | 3766 comments Annika wrote: "The only way I can make it though the bricks is by listening to the audios - they forces me through the books =P"

I do that too. I think we may have similar reading patterns ;)
I have the physical copy to refer to, and then pound through on audio

message 41: by Annika (new)

Annika | 1412 comments Maybe we're related? ;)

message 42: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Audio without a physical copy is impossible for me. I need to read along from time to time or I won't retain anything at all of the book. I'm very weird that way.

But ... long audios, like the really long ones, are just as scary as holding the doorstop in my hands. Just thinking about the fact that I'm going to have to listen to a book for 40 hours... Yikes!

I agree. I can rarely listen to an audiobook without having an ebook or paperback to refer to. Some of the less complicated ones like Jojo Moyes are fine, but Fantasy is always difficult due to the number of characters they tend to have, and maps etc.
I throw audio to 1.25x and then that 40 hour book doesn't feel quite so bad (even though it takes me 2 week to listen to)...lol!

Karen what do you use when listening to audio, I would love to speed up mine, but haven't found an app that let's me do that. :(
