Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments My highest ratings have gone to Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, #4) by Ilona Andrews and Magic Strikes (Kate Daniels, #3) by Ilona Andrews

message 502: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments I like this one the most.
The Likeness (Dublin Murder Squad, #2) by Tana French
This is the only book that I gave 5 stars this year. The plot is very good.

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments Lulu, the Kate Daniels books are very good. I have some short novels to read before I'll start book 6.

message 504: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 1132 comments @Tammie: I've been meaning to check out the Virgin River series, glad to hear you love it!

@Lulu- I love Kate Daniels! One of my favorite series.

@Lusie- I bought The Likeness from audible over a year ago, before finishing the first book, but haven't been able to get myself to listen to it since I hated how the In the Woods ended. But, I'm sure I'll get to it eventually.

I think my favorite book so far is The Stand by Stephen King . It's LONG, but worth it.

message 505: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments Victoria, I haven't read In the Woods yet. I want to read it this month. I didn't realise it was a series when I picked up The Likeness

message 506: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments I'm a little disappointed in myself that I haven't come across the Kate Daniels series before.
I started You on audiobook. I'm not sure it's for me. The narration is really good but the story is intense.

This is my first time doing this challenge and I know there was talk of minis but as we are going into the last month is it safe to assume there won't be any?

My first as well. No idea. I prefer more interaction in finding books...this one has been nice as I've felt good being able to read longer books...but it's a bit boring Challenge-wise...to me anyway. I know it's a lot of work putting these things together though...I appreciate whatever comes my way...boring or not.

message 508: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments I know what you mean Tammie. I feel like I'm reading slower. There isn't as much pressure which is nice but sometimes I need a little bit of a push. I think I'm going to challenge myself to bring in more points.
I have really enjoyed chatting in this group though. We all seem to be book compatible, which isn't always the case in challenges

I've kept a pretty good pace I think. Starting another BOM today.

I agree, this is definitely boring compared to before, but I enjoy the discussions with everyone here

Victoria | 1132 comments Lusie wrote: "Victoria, I haven't read In the Woods yet. I want to read it this month. I didn't realise it was a series when I picked up The Likeness"

It was good and definitely worth reading, especially if you enjoyed The Likeness. I was annoyed with how the ending played out, but you might like it.

message 512: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 1132 comments I also agree the challenge is a bit boring this year.

I liked all the tasks and challenges during last years TT, but I'm happy we aren't doing them this year just because I needed a break from the overly specific challenges. I'm also more motivated to read longer books and participate in BOMs (although I realize I haven't been doing too much of either).

That being said, I wish there were a couple of mini challenges thrown in to increase the excitement and make things more interesting.

message 513: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments Victoria, now I'm really curious!

You are right, this challenge is a bit boring. But I do like chatting with everyone here.

We can always make up our own challenge, like read a book for each different point category. That would encourage us to read longer books.

message 514: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm with Victoria: I'm glad there wasn't constant mini challenges that made me change my reading plan but I wish there had been a couple. This is my worst performance ever in a tower teams round.

For some reason lately I just can't motivate myself to read. I only have one class this time and it's pretty easy.

message 515: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments Lusie, I like your idea about trying to read a book for each different point category.

We seem to be maintaining our position in 10th place.

Are all of the BOMs taken for the month?

Lusie and I are reading the Woman in Cabin 10...just started yesterday so I'm sure there's enough time to join in you want to.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm stalled on the Gunslinger because disc 3 was so bad from the library and they don't have any copies available. I don't really want to buy a copy. Maybe I'll pop into Barnes and Noble and sneak read that section of the book.

I have been slow reading this time too - just not in a reading mood lately - bad timing since we're in the Team towers

I am almost done with a mystery

Alexa Carver (alexacarver) | 195 comments Ok, guys, sorry I've been gone so long! I've spent the last hour or so working on our spreadsheet and it's reloading now. I think I've gotten everyone's BOM points in (including the ones that haven't finished yet, but we won't receive points for those until they're marked as read) but I'm human and make mistakes so let me know if I've missed your points! Everyone's books should have points also, so if you still have a book with 0 points let me know.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6264 comments No problem Alexa

Looks like we are now #9 guys :)

message 521: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments Yay!

message 522: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments Thanks Alexa. My points look good.

I have now finished The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware . I gave it 3 stars. It was so hard to get into this book.

I'm looking forward to see my BOM and DQ points for this one.

I wouldn't mind doing a mini challenge among ourselves. And if we make it so we read a book from a different point category I've got the last one covered since I started reading Fall of Giants (The Century Trilogy, #1) by Ken Follett , which is 985 pages. I started reading (well, listening) to it right after finishing The Stand by Stephen King (1153 pages) - I'm so proud of myself right now.

I'm actually make much less progress in The Gunslinger, which is significantly shorter. I really like it, but I think my copy is cursed. Nearly every time I pick it up to read I have to immediately put it down to deal with something else or the people, and surroundings in general, decide to become extremely loud. It's impressive I've managed to read as much as I have.

message 524: by Lisette (last edited Jul 04, 2017 07:50AM) (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments Victoria, that's awesome! I haven't read books with so many pages this year. I'll try to read more big books before the end of this challenge.

That does sound annoying about the curse on your book lol

message 525: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments That is awesome Victoria.

I started looking for longer books yesterday but couldn't really settle on anything.

message 526: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4177 comments I just started The Chosen...BDB is one of my favorite series.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6264 comments I'm going to try to read a lot of mysteries this month to fulfill other challenges but also a personal goal plan. I am behind on mystery reading this year.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6264 comments Wow everyone we have now hopped to #7

message 529: by Lesley (new)

Lesley (laparks) | 729 comments My points all look good. Thanks Alexa, for all you do to make sure we're getting all of points!!

I am finding this challenge a little blah too, but then again, the first tower team challenge that I joined in on (it was either #2 or #3 I think) there were so many non-reading puzzles and activities that it took away so much time for the actual reading! I've been just trying to fill holes in my other reading challenges - so that's been keeping me motivated to get lots of reading done.

And it's a really good thing that I do have my reading as a way to beat stress. Last week we had to buy a new refrigerator because ours stopped keeping food cold and then yesterday we had to have our plumber come to replace the pump in our well because we had no water. Not a good time to have these kinds of big expenses, since I literally only work 64 hours over the course of 4 weeks for our school's summer school between now and the end of August. and my Scentsy business isn't bringing in big paychecks yet!

message 530: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4177 comments Hey everyone...I just read in the newsletter a MC is on the way...some kind of tribute to a new release called Ash and Quill...I'm not familiar with this author...

message 531: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 1132 comments @ Lesley - That's terrible! I hope things work out with the new fridge and no other problems creep up. I'm glad you are at least able to escape into books, they are a great stress reliever.

@Tammie - I've read/listened to the first two books of The Great Library series (Ink and Bone and Paper and Fire) and loved them! Especially the first book. I'm always on the fence about reading YA fantasy - it's a big hit or miss genre for me, but this one was a lot of fun. I will definitely make plans to read Ash and Quill when it comes out during this challenge.

message 532: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 1132 comments Hope everyone had a great Fourth of July! I had to work so I missed all the fun and fireworks, but hope everyone had a great time in my stead!

message 533: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments Lesley, what a bad timing for everything to break down! I'm glad reading helps you to reduce stress.

Tammie, I'm not familiar with that author either though the first book of the series is on my tbr.

I hope our american friends had a great 4th of July!

Victoria, sorry you missed all celebrations.

message 534: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments It always seems like life works that way: when one thing breaks, something else is sure to break soon after.

I had to work Monday but had yesterday off and got almost through an audio book and should finish that today. I joined another stepbet to make myself walk more. My foot is feeling better and I was reading that walking is good for plantar fasciitis anyway, I just might have to take it slower on some days. Plus get better about icing and massaging it out.

message 535: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I never made it to Barnes & Noble to sneak read that section of the Gunslinger. But it looks like someone put the audio book on Youtube. So I will try that. I loaded the other discs onto Itunes and it didn't give me any trouble with them. So I think they should be fine.

message 536: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4177 comments I really liked The Woman in Cabin 10...I recommend this read to anyone loving this genre...

I just couldn't get into this book. I wonder if it is just me.

message 538: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I didn't really like the Woman in Cabin 10 either.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6264 comments Ugh I am so groggy today. Back to work -- I should be okay, got plenty of sleep, but apparently not. Maybe it's from messing up my sleep schedule for five days.

message 540: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments How is everyone's weekend going?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6264 comments Pretty good Lulu. I slept in too late - but ended up helping neighbor with a project and just relaxing. Been a short and fast day, but a good one. Glad I have another day off.

☘K²¹³Ù³ó²â¶Ù☘ | 124 comments successful so far...I haven't killed anyone yet and I got to hang out with my sweet Lily (my dog) all day while I got rid of a migraine...we got bad news about Lily's health this week, but she had a pretty good day today!

How is your weekend going Lulu?

message 543: by Lisette (new)

Lisette (illusie) | 2 comments I had a nice weekend. The weather is very hot here. I didn't do a lot of reading, but I'll be able to finish In the Woods today.

message 544: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4177 comments I'm sitting by the pool...waiting for sun! Thinking about whether or not I want a strawberry daiquiri or not. Finishing The Chosen...pretty good...not my favorite in the series but, as always...jammed packed with lots going on in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood!

message 545: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 285 comments My weekend has been pretty good too. It has been super hot here as well. I woke up thinking it was Monday, so I'm glad I had more weekend. I'm going to finish Fair Game in a bit.

Kathy sorry to hear about your bad news.

Tammie, I keep trying to read The Beast but I cannot make myself start it. I like the series but the later books sometimes disappoint me.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 6264 comments I've been reading a lot of Agatha Christie lately. Finished The ABC Murders earlier

It is ridiculously hot and humid here too. Miserable. After a trip to the store came home and took a cool shower, which was heavenly.

☘K²¹³Ù³ó²â¶Ù☘ | 124 comments thanks Lulu!

message 548: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Erin I've been in an Agatha Christie mood as well. Maybe it's because I've seen the preview for Murder on the Orient Express. That book is waiting for me at the library. I just reread The Big Four and Towards Zero.

I love her stuff! I'm a big Hercule Poirot fan especially.

message 550: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have too many books going at the moment. I'm going to really try and focus on getting them finished for points.

Oh and thanks to Youtube, I got another large section of the Gunslinger done. I answered one set of questions. If I finish the book without answering another set, we will still get the extra points right?
