Ashleigh | 915 comments Hi everyone! I'm Ashleigh and I will be your team captain for this challenge. This is my 3rd year taking part in the UNO challenge, and 2nd year as captain.

Looking forward to getting this challenge started!

message 11: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments Hi! I am Lulu. This is my third time doing this challenge also. I was a co-captain my first two years but decided to just be a player this year. I hope we have a great time and can really hit the ground running :)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments Hi All! I am MelanieJoy (Mel or Melanie is fine as well). This is my first UNO challenge, but not my first GR challenge. Looking forward to trying out this co-captain thing as well!

I'm also in California, USA, so I'll be picking up the rear as far as time zones go.

I'm excited to sort of get to know all of you and learn more about some great books!

message 15: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments Has anyone started thinking about what they want to read next month?
I think I am going to start with Nice Girls Don't Live Forever (Jane Jameson, #3) by Molly Harper and maybe The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King

message 16: by MelanieJoy (new)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments I would like to read Love Does Discover a Secretly Incredible Life in an Ordinary World by Bob Goff , As Bright as Heaven by Susan Meissner , and Redwall (Redwall, #1) by Brian Jacques . I'm going to start The City of Brass (The Daevabad Trilogy, #1) by S.A. Chakraborty tomorrow and I'll probably finish it before the month is over.

This is my first Time doing any GR challenge! I’m irish and studying in Budapest! Just finishing exams so looking forward to getting back to reading books!😊😝

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments Budapest! That is so cool Megan.

message 19: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments I know we don't start until next week but should we talk about how we are going to play?

On teams I've been on in the past we have done it differently. Are we going to be posting which cards we are reading for first or are we posting every card our book qualifies for after we have finished it? Or are we doing both?

Ashleigh I know you said you've played before how have you done it before?

message 20: by MelanieJoy (new)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments I say we post qualifying cards and the captains will rearrange them as books get completed. That way we maximize play time and points.

Please feel free to object with me if you have a different opinion.

message 21: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments That is how my team played last year and it worked well.

I think waiting to start is the hardest part of uno for me.

Another thing to think about is that towards the end of the month it helps for everyone to know what cards are left so we know what we need to read for the cards and the mini challenges that usually come at the end of the month.

message 22: by MelanieJoy (new)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments Sounds good! I think maybe 6-7 days before months end, one of the captains can post tasks left to finish and the mini challenges, and we should be good with that much notice. We can always modify it :)

message 23: by MelanieJoy (new)

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 213 comments Also Lulu, I think Laura told me you were co-captains with her last year. She was my captain for Towers V in NBRC, and we've done some book recommendations for each other. :)

message 24: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (lulufritz) | 704 comments MelanieJoy wrote: "Also Lulu, I think Laura told me you were co-captains with her last year. She was my captain for Towers V in NBRC, and we've done some book recommendations for each other. :)"

Awesome. Yeah we were. She is a great captain. She got me to sign up for Towers V too but we didn't end up on the same team.

message 25: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 915 comments Yeah I think if when we finish a book, we say what cards it fits and then we can put it in the best spots and move it around if need be.

I believe last year, we added a couple of pages to our spreadsheet (or it might have been a separate spreadsheet set up) where we could all list our books and what cards it work for. I'll have a look at what exactly we did but I think that might be a good idea for keeping track.

message 26: by Ashleigh (last edited Jan 25, 2018 04:44AM) (new)

Ashleigh | 915 comments So the mods have created a spreadsheet that we can use to keep track of our books. I have made a copy of that, and will post it here, and above in the top section.

Also, could everyone please post their shelves so I can add them above? Thank you :)

message 30: by Paulina (new)

Paulina (polly1) Hi everyone! I’m Paulina. I’m an English teacher from Poland living in Norway with a Swedish husband, so my books will be in different languages :) it’s my first time in any of the Gr challenges so it’s just a tiny bit overwhelming. However, I’m determined to learn the rules and contribute to our group as best as I can.

So my first question is: can I use the book I’ve just started reading and will finish in February? It is “It ends with us Coleen Hoover. I can see it would go with some of the cards.

message 31: by Ashleigh (new)

Ashleigh | 915 comments Hi Paulina

I believe you can only use books that have been started from 1st February so unfortunately that book don't count.

message 32: by Jane (new)

Jane | 297 comments Hi, I'm Jane and I'm from Denmark. I also took part in Uno last year and really liked it.
I do a lot of challenges and read a lot of books.

Megan | 6 comments Hey! I’ve no idea how to add a shelf, maybe it’s cause I’m on the app and not website. I’ll see can I get the URL off that! So I’m a little confused!

Do we just choose a book to read and see does it fit a card, or is each member given a card and picks a book to suit that card?

Want to make sure I’m ready for the 1st😂

Usually you pick what you want to read and in general it will fit a card. We aren't assigning cards as far as I know in this group. It is helpful if you know that your book fits some cards before you start so you don't have to try and make it fit later.
If you look at message one in this thread you will find our team spreadsheet. Under the February tab it has all of the cards for next month. There is also a tab that shows what will fit each card and an example tab.
Hope this helps :)

Megan | 6 comments Thank you Lulu!

Can’t wait to start, I’ll go hunt some books now!
I’m a big fan or sci-fi/fantasy if anyone has some good recommendations!

Ingeborg I believe it was Tinyeye which was the colour extractor.

message 48: by Ingeborg (last edited Jan 28, 2018 01:14PM) (new)

Ingeborg (redrum) | 410 comments I'm planning on reading Ravenspur Rise of the Tudors (The Wars of the Roses, #4) by Conn Iggulden , which can fit 5, and The Hero of Ages (Mistborn, #3) by Brandon Sanderson , which can fit several, among others 7 Blue. It's quite a large book, though, so it might take some time. Other than that I have no specific books planned, but I've been wanting to read those two for a little while now, because I got them both for Christmas.

My favourite genres are fantasy of different kinds and a bit of historical fiction, but I'll read pretty much anything if it's well written and catches my interest. Still, it's the fantasy I keep coming back to when I really want to disappear into a story. How about you guys, any genres or authors you really like? What are you reading right now?

I'm excited to get to know you all!

I'm not sure The Hero of Ages (Mistborn, #3) by Brandon Sanderson will count for a blue cover. I believe it has to be over 50% when using

The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson is in my tbr pile. How do you like the series?
I read a lot of paranormal, fantasy, romance. I've gotten into the Kate Daniels series recently.
