R16: Team #3 ~ Third Time's The Charm

Review:
Loved this book! Suzanne Wright has created a new world of vampires. Her vamps are "born" into one of three breeds and have their own special powers. Sam is classed as Svente' the lowest class of vampire, and she is always underestimated. She is a bad ass and constantly making others regret their assumptions.
Great story, characters, action and romance. Sam and Jared's chemistry is off the charts.

It's really a great book. in fact I stayed up until 2am to finish it this morning. Thankfully I don't have patients today. I'm trying to clear my desk(that will never happen!). I'm taking a break shortly to have a cup of coffee and write my review.

I died first, so I made cookies.
Pirate Night at the Hauptman house finds Mercy out of the game and baking cookies. A quick trip to the convenience store is in order when she discovers that she needs more eggs to complete the recipe. What should be a simple errand becomes a violent accident and the kidnapping of Mercy. She awakens in Milan battered, bruised and unable to link with Adam through their mate bond.
The first part of this book started a little more slowly than normal. Usually I dive right in and get invested in the story. The longer I read, the more I realized that it was me and not the book. The wow factor came crashing in when Mercy escapes from the vampire who kidnapped her. He is Iacopo (Jacob) Bonarata, the Master of Milan and the former lover of Marsilia. He has been told by Wulfe that Mercy is the most powerful creature in the Columbia Basin.
Mercy leaves Milan and ends up in Prague. She is left to her own devices to survive. The resident alpha, Libor, has a past with Bran which may not be to her advantage. The pack reluctantly offers help only to be pulled into a huge mess between the two local seethes.
Adam's unfailing love and need for Mercy is so very evident in this book. He chooses a powerful group of allies to travel with him to Milan. Each person has a skill set that he will need to rescue Mercy.
I loved the European setting for the book. Everything dripped with history and the more I read the more I wanted to research some of the information. (Yes, I'm a bit of a geek) I would love to see this as a film although I generally hate seeing what happens to a good book when it is adapted to the screen. I had such vivid images in my mind as I read. Little things like the matching outfits in Milan, the sweet mastiff that accepts Mercy and the bakery in Prague.
The action is fabulous with some great clashes between very powerful beings. Again, I could really see some of those on the big screen.
Taking Mercy, Adam and the other power players out of Columbia Basin was a wild and wonderful ride. Who knew that the goblin king was named Larry? So much background was revealed. So much history was detailed. Now I need to re-read some of the parts that I basically skimmed in the beginning because I couldn't get my head in the book. Now I can't get the book out of my head.
I love this series and highly recommend it!

Thank you, Sandra. I had the hardest time getting into the book. I know it was me. Various anniversaries are rolling around and I'm struggling. Once I cleared my mind I was able to become a part of the story. I spent lunch reading about Prague.

This will be a re-read for me. I can't believe it's been almost 6 years since I read this. At the time it was not my favorite. From my review, I was a little confused. And I was not impressed with Curran. My, how things have changed!

Review So, I picked this book specifically for a challenge, but was blown away by the story! I wasn’t expecting such a neat twist to how magic became part of the “human world. Terak and Larissa make a cute pair. It is fun to see Terak breakdown his walls as he grows closer to Larissa. For her part, I enjoyed that Larissa stopped wanting to be pushed around and started to push back...especially with her family. Looking forward to seeing where the next adventure takes this series!

In some ways I felt that I had started the second book the series without reading the first. It will be interesting to discover Grier's backstory, as details are sparse. The story begins with Grier's release from prison and leads onto her search for the person who framed her for the murder of her guardian. There are lots of interesting tiers of class within the supernatural society, with an unusual take on necromancers and vampires. While I felt for Grier and shuddered at the torment we experience through her recurring nightmares, it was the house Wolly that eclipsed the story. I fell in love with Wolly, who is a character in her own right, with personality in spades. One step creaked louder than the others in counterargument. and “Are you insane? I glared up at the foyer chandelier. “You let him on the porch? The light brightened then dimmed, the Woolly equivalent of a shrug. The story itself is intriguing but it did feel in many ways the set-up book for the rest of the series with lots of unresolved plot threads.

I sat at a table in my shadowy kitchen, staring down a bottle of Boone's Farm Hard Lemonade, when a magic fluctuation hit.
I originally read this book in November of 2012. At the time I was a little confused and didn't care for Curran. My, how times have changed!
Kate's guardian has been killed and she is determined to discover the murderer. As a mercenary, Kate is accustomed to finding her own way and has no problem looking into the crime. In the course of her investigation, she learns that shifters and vampires alike are missing. This becomes a vital key to the killer.
I had forgotten about Kate's introduction to Curran. I knew where and when it happened but had apparently blanked out her infamous, "Here, kitty, kitty" when Curran fails to show himself. I kept questioning why I didn't fall in love with him then.
I enjoyed being introduced to Ghastek and Saiman again. Saiman still kinda creeps me out but I find him a fascinating character. I really enjoyed being introduced to the Pack. Subtle things like Kate's first meeting of Aunt B and Derek. So many things that I take for granted later in the series.
I still felt a little lost at the beginning. It seemed like there should have been a previous book or novella. Lo and behold, there is! I need to go back and read it now too. I also need to read from Curran's POV.
Kate is still a snarky, kick ass heroine no matter where you find her. I love how she pushes to the limit and doesn't back down.
Now I need to go back and reread all of the books. Maybe I need to have a Kate-a-palooza one weekend soon and just gorge on the whole series up to Magic Binds. Yes, I know that I am two years behind but I want to read books 9 and 10 back to back.
So even with a rocky start some 5 1/2 years ago, I love this series and recommend it highly.

Waiting on the new shelf call, hopefully its a shelf that brings us 1 closer to BINGO. I am about 55% done with my Necromancer book and will get everything updated by weeks end.
This Necomancers shelf put one team one away from bingo so lets hope they don't get their winning shelf this week

I'll look into the audio. I tend to read faster than having someone read to me. If I have the book I will follow along with the narrator which defeats the purpose.

Maybe I should be doing housework with audio rather than sitting to read. LOL!

Review There are no words...I loved this book four years ago when I read it...I love it even more now. Zsadist’s story is heartbreaking, but also full of hope. I love how Z comes out of his darkness bit, by bit with Bella’s help and determination. Seeing as I have read through The Beast, I know a lot of what will happen to some of these beloved characters in coming books; however, it doesn’t detract from meeting each character again and learning a little bit more that I may have overlooked the first time through.

Shelf 8: HUNTER
Skinwalker by Faith Hunter

Review:
I wheeled my bike down Decatur Street and eased deeper into the French Quarter, the bike's engine purring.
Jane Yellowrock is a vampire hunter from North Carolina who has been hired by a centuries old vampire in New Orleans to kill a rogue. She is also a skin walker of Cherokee descent. Jane's "beast" picks up the rogue's scent soon after her arrival and the hunt begins.
This story caught me from the beginning and held my interest through out the book. As a native Charlottean, I appreciated the information about her stay on the Catawba River which is our number one water source. Her knowledge of the Cherokee and the NC mountains was evident in her writing. I enjoyed that Jane's skinwalker was an animal other than a coyote as most are seen as the Trickster god.
Jane struggles to sift out the good from the bad in the vampire community. The humans are even harder to separate. I like the addition of the witches and look forward to learning more about Jane's friend Molly.
Being somewhat of a tea snob myself, I really enjoyed Jane's enjoyment of good tea, It was little things like this that made her more human.
The book is fast paced and filled with great characters. I enjoyed this introduction to this kick ass heroine and look forward to reading more in the series.

review:
New author, New series
This was a quick, fast paced read. I was drawn right in to the story. Good action, suspense and romance. Loved how this author's shifters aren't positive a person is their mate until they share a touch. Don't think I have come across that in any other shifter genre book that I have read. And I always love when the heroine isn't a pushover. Liberty is a strong, selfless, fierce lady. Loved her chemistry with Talon.
I really enjoyed this book and will be adding the next book in the series to my tbr pile.

Say it ain't so!!!!! I hate that this is the last book in the series, but what a way to close it out.
This was action packed, full of twists and turns and emotional tugs and pulls. Bones and Cat turned up the bad assery in this one. I'm going to miss these characters.
I think that it is a satisfying conclusion to a great series. I enjoyed Ms. Frost's writing and will checking out her other series.

Review:
Although a little confusing at times, the world building in Faith Hunter’s debut novel is superb. There is a lot of telling, but for all that, it is filled with flashes of the brilliance we see in her Jane Yellowrock and Soulwood series. It is easy to see that this is her early work.
A very different dystopian with seraphs (angels) and demons. The church is in ascendance and there are many biblical references and quotes of scripture. It is illegal to blaspheme with harsh consequences if reported to the clerics. Thorn St Croix is an unregistered stone mage in Mineral City. Her ex-husband the brother of her best friend is kidnapped. Thorn is drawn in against her will and comes to the attention of the authorities, local townspeople and the seraphs who rule with iron cruelty.

I have refused to read this because I don't want to let go of Cat and Bones. I know it is silly but I just can't let go.

I know. I'm thinking about going back and reading the entire series back to back and finally finishing it. My theory is that if I don't read it then it is not over. Sigh..

Good Job!! :D

That's how i am with certain series as well. I didn't realize it was the last book when i started. But i will more than likely read Vlad's and Ian's series.
I've been sitting on the 8th book in the Outlander series for a verrry long time now. Will not read it until i get book 9

I'm doing the same thing with Outlander! I guess I'm just a control freak. I can control things in my own little world.

My control issues make air travel difficult. I can't sleep because the plane will not stay in the air if I close my eyes. I've done the flight to Amman enough that the flight attendants just keep bringing me tea.

None of my OCDness is that bad that it affects my life thank goodness. It must drive you crazy.

It does drive me nuts! At one time I could settle down and sleep the entire flight. I'm not sure when that changed. Thank goodness for books!
