Mary Pat | 2186 comments Suggested break down of reading so that you can check in and let us know how you're doing. The following breakdown is purely a suggestion and is therefore not set in stone.

Rather than putting dates for each section I've done it so that it takes into account that not everybody will necessarily have the book at the same time.

Week 1: 99
Week 2: 99
Week 3: 99
Week 4: 99

Susy (susysstories) I think I will have to buy this one. My own library doesn’t have it and inter library will take forever, have to request every day, I get a notification that they don’t have it but without mention of how long the waiting list is.... Still in doubt though if I should buy a physical copy (20 euros) or ebook (9 euros)....

Tahera | 98 comments I am actually reading this at the moment so could I join in?

The more the merrier!
How are you liking it so far?

I am liking it very much...very well written!

Is it a book worth owning as a physical copy?

Kristina I’ll be able to start this in about a week. Looking forward to reading this with you all.

SarahKat | 5930 comments Looks like I will have to buy it as well. My library doesn't even have the copy yet and it already has holds. Hopefully it's worth it.

Cendaquenta | 307 comments I am inhaling this through my eyeballs. Currently at the start of Chapter 7.

I would say yes :)

Wow! Must be good :-) Please share your thoughts about it (marking spoilers, of course)."

Haha, I think most of my thoughts on it right now would just be shaking the book around going "aaaaaaa? AAAAAAA!"

Umm:

- Hoo boy Madeline Miller can WRITE. I think I should reread Song of Achilles.
- The descriptions are lush. I feel like I'm watching this book as if it were a movie.
- Almost every character is a horrible horrible person, but I love it because yes, this is exactly how you portray the Greek pantheon right, as inhuman beings who don't work with our morality.
- I'm not fully behind Circe as a first-person narrator. It's not the book's fault, I think YA has made me wary of first-person in general.

Lastly, the physical book is so gorgeous. I have this edition: Circe by Madeline Miller - it's gloriously intricate and detailed, shiny orange-bronze, and textured. <3

The description and writing is splendid...reading the book is like watching a movie in my head...a very well made movie to be exact :)

Susy (susysstories) Probably won't start this one until the end of the month....

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 2208 comments I haven't participated in a buddy read in this group before, I'm not sure about the rules and what is required by participants?

Anyone still planning to/reading this? I will probably start this novel by the weekend.

I wasn't overly impressed by The Song of Achilles (ended up rating it a 2.5 stars) but I liked the author's writing style, so I'm willing to give her another go ... happy reading everyone :)

Cendaquenta | 307 comments I just finished it last night and loved it.

No rules except marking spoilers.

I'm planning on reading it as well, but haven't got my copy yet...

message 19: by Susy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Susy (susysstories) I've heard it contains some spoilers for The Song of Achilles, so am going to read that one first (in June). Anybody interested?

Since Circe was planned for May and June, I will read Circe after finishing Song of Achilles.

Cool!

Overbooked ✎ (kiwi_fruit) | 2208 comments I finished reading this novel last night. I won't give out spoilers here, let's just say I gave it a 3 stars rating, which means I liked it but didn't love it.

Chrissy | 262 comments I’ll be starting this tomorrow or Tuesday, and probably reading it pretty fast. I loved Song of Achilles, so excited for this one!

message 24: by Mary Pat (new)

Mary Pat | 2186 comments Greetings, All! I am a little confused. I did not have this book down as a two month read as it is pretty short. I gather folks are going to read Song of Achilles in June. Do you want me to extend this read? Let me know!

message 25: by Susy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Susy (susysstories) Yes please, not everybody was able to read it in May, or only starting at the end of may, so that’s why we went for a two months read.

Chrissy | 262 comments I read this last week, loved it, 5 stars. I’ll wait till more people have finished to talk about it more though!

message 27: by Ana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ana (vumblereads) I bought the ebook for my kindle paperwhite. I’ve read about 60% of the book and so far I’m loving it. It’s definitely a page turner for me.

message 28: by Kara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I plan to read this one too!

Katie Brennan hiya! finished this about a week ago and I LOVED it. I think Madeline Miller is an incredible writer- the way she brings alive mythical characters without it being too 'fairytale', giving them feelings, problems and traits that we can relate to in a modern world is so clever. Loved learning about the Circe story, it's not one that I know, and so awesome to hear about a powerful woman that I empathised with. Such a treat!

Veronica Hninn (looking_for_veronica) | 85 comments I agree with you, Katie. I’m only a couple of chapters away from finishing the book but I accidentally spoiled myself the ending by reading a Wikipedia article about Odysseus! I’m so mad at myself.

Harshmi | 119 comments Im planning it on reading it too but Im in queue of holds at my library as they only have 1 copy. I might read it next month!

message 32: by Kara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I just started, and I'm really excited! I've been a sucker for Greek mythology since I was a kid, so I know how this is going to end, but I'm still interested to see how Miller handles it.

Veronica Hninn (looking_for_veronica) | 85 comments I’ve just finished the book! I absolutely loved it. The ending is not as weird as I thought it would be which is awesome. My heart skips a beat whenever a character I recognize from the myths pops up. Reading Circe has been one hell of an experience. It’s just as good as The Song of Achilles.

Mary Pat | 2186 comments Tahera, KiwiBegs2Differ, Chrissy, Kara, Katie, Harshmi, Phil - you have all been added to the list of participants! FYI, you don't need to wait to be added to the list to join in on any Buddy Read! Just remember to mark spoilers!

message 37: by Kara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments I'm almost halfway through and I'm enjoying it. Despite all my love of Greek mythology, I wasn't really familiar with the Jason and Medea story (I'd heard about the golden fleece, but that's about it), so that was really cool to read about.

message 38: by Susy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Susy (susysstories) I'm going really slow, but that has nothing to do with the story or the writing. I'm really liking it (better and better), but work has been really hectic (and that is an understatement). Next to having to arrange everything for my vacation which is in a week's time and I'm bringing my cat with me for the first time, so that is quite stressful as well. And if that isn't enough my father was committed to the hospital last weekend due to heart problems (so not even sure if I'm going on vacation at all).

Besides all of this, I've decided to do some research (next year): do I like books better when read in physical form rather than digital? I have this impression. And while it's not going to be good research (would have to read all books both in physical form and as e-book, randomly reading one first as e-book than in physical form and the other vice versa), I hope to get some idea if this impression seems to be right or that it is all in my head.... So want to check out the different star ratings and also keep track of the number of pages read per hour (I feel like I read faster on paper). But maybe that may also be due to reading on my small iPhone; I might read faster when reading on my iPad.... A lot to track....

Cendaquenta | 307 comments Hm, that's funny, I'm the opposite - I inadvertently rush through ebooks.

Sorry to hear about your father, I hope he recovers quickly.

I am also sorry to hear about your father. I hope all goes well. And I have to say I thought it was just me-- ebooks take me so much longer to read than regular books. I am definitely with you in thinking I enjoy a book more in printed form.

Hi Susy, I hope your father gets well soon. For me, I think my reading speed is same for physical books and ebooks (when I'm reading on my Kindle). My speed is slow when I read on phone or laptop though and I can't do it for long as the glare hurts my eyes after a while so I don't do it often.

Harshmi | 119 comments I just finished the book and absolutely loved it. I am definitely gonna read The Song of Achilles now.

message 47: by Ana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ana (vumblereads) There is another book written by Margaret Atwood titled, the Penelopiad, and I’m curious about it. It talks about Penelope of course and is another spin I guess on what happened. I feel like reading Circe and the Penelopiad would be good books to read together. I’m still in line for the book in the library though. Borrowed it through Libby, the library app.

The ratings are lower than for Miller's books.... Have you read Atwood before? To my shame I must say I haven't yet, but picked up Alias Grace yesterday to take with me on my vacation.

message 50: by Ana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ana (vumblereads) I’ve only read Stone Mattress and I really liked it. But those were short stories.
