1. An airplane door wasn't shut properly
The last thing you want to realize 40 minutes into a flight is that the door isn't shut properly. But that's exactly what happened on a flight from the Philippines to South Korea in 2016. No passengers were harmed but they all received compensation.
✈️ Read a book with an open door on the cover OR where a character gets compensation for something OR with a title that begins with P.
2. Feathered friends on board
It's not unusual for Middle Eastern airlines to have a few extra pairs of wings. Not only can birds of prey have their own passports, they don't need to be kept in cages when the aircraft is in flight. Although airlines usually restrict the number of birds in the aircraft to just six, you could find yourself sat next to one and in the case of one unusual flight to Jeddah as many as twenty falcons.
✈️ Read a book with a bird of prey on the cover or mentioned in the story (Give us a sentence and page/loc#) OR a Series #6 or #20.
3. A forgotten wedding dress
Planning to get married abroad? Don’t forget to take your wedding dress when you when you disembark. A Skyscanner survey in 2013 that quizzed cabin crew saw one flight attendant reporting that someone had left their gown in the overhead lockers. You can't replace that in duty free.
✈️ Read a book where a character has a destination wedding OR where an item was forgotten on a plane OR with a wedding dress on the cover.
4. The Pope might marry you
When Pope Francis took his seat on a flight to Chile, he got talking to two engaged flight attendants. Carlos Ciuffardi and Paola Podest told him that a huge earthquake had destroyed the church that they'd planned to marry in. So Pope Francis stepped in and married the couple right there on the flight.
✈️ Read a book where a couple gets married in an odd spot (Tell us where) OR by an author whose first and last name begin with the same letter OR where an earthquake occurs.
5. In-flight maintenance
Unless it’s the cocktail variety, don’t ask for a screwdriver on a flight. Especially if it’s to try and take the seats apart as one passenger attempted to do. They were swiftly removed from the plane.
✈️ Read a book where a screwdriver is used OR where a person is removed from some place OR where a cocktail is consumed.
6. Emotional support... monkey?
A lot of U.S airlines are surprisingly flexible when it comes to emotional support animals, but only if they have the correct paperwork. Gizmo the marmoset made it onto a flight from Vegas to Ohio but his owner’s lack of paperwork meant that the pair were later put on the airline’s no-fly list.
✈️ Read a book where a character has an unusual pet (Tell us the kind of pet.) OR set in Las Vegas OR with a character who has an unusual name. (Tell us the name.)
7. How mushrooms caused an emergency landing
A humble jar of mushroom soup once caused a plane to make an emergency landing after it started leaking in the overhead locker. It dripped onto a man with a severe mushroom allergy and the Ryanair plane flying from Brussels to Dublin had to land in Germany.
✈️ Read a book where a character has an allergic reaction OR set in Germany OR where an emergency occurs.
8. Bees on a plane
Air traffic controllers had another type of winged traffic to deal with after thousands of bees decided to make themselves at home under the wing of a plane in Dallas, Texas in 2015. The queen bee had flown under the wing and her dutiful bees followed her. Before the plane could take off, a local beekeeper was called to remove them, causing a delay of an hour.
✈️ Read a book where bees are prominent in the story OR set in Dallas or Texas OR published in 2015.
9. A celebrity relieved himself
French actor Gerard Depardieu was removed from a plane in 2011 after he was accused of urinating in front of passengers. He refused to wait until the plane was in the air to use the bathroom so he relieved himself in a bottle at the back of the plane instead.
✈️ Read a book with a celebrity in the story (may be real or fictional) OR where a character relieves themselves in public OR with a character that is an actor.
10. A hair-raising experience
A plane to Majorca was forced to divert after a man set fire to his travel companion's hair as a prank during a flight from Manchester to Palma in 2012. The plane diverted to London Gatwick where the prankster was ejected from the flight and arrested for endangering aircraft safety.
✈️ Read a book where a character is set on fire OR with a character that is a prankster OR where a character is arrested for endangering others.
11. Maggots in the overhead locker
However bad your flight is, just be happy you weren't sitting under an overhead locker with maggots falling out of it. A passenger on a US Airways flight from Atlanta in 2010 had bought some spoiled meat on board with him and an unexpected load of wriggly friends.
✈️ Read a book where spoiled food is found OR where a character finds maggots OR with a word in the title that contains double consonants.
12. Baby on board
When Brit Debbie Owen went into labor on her flight, she tried her best to ignore the contractions and hold off until she landed. Despite her efforts, she was moved to first class and her baby was born in the air. She named her Shona Kirsty Yves, giving her the initials SKY.
✈️ Read a book where a character gives birth in a strange place

MC Simon gives birth in a bookmobile
Finished 23/3
13. Don't sing too loud
Next time you're getting really into the music with your headphones on, avoid any Whitney Houston. A woman was removed from a plane for singing "I Will Always Love You" at the top of her lungs in 2013. Officials insist it wasn't her song choice that was the problem.
✈️ Read a book where a character sings while wearing headphones or ear buds OR with a character that does not sing well OR with a title that begins with I.
14. Pigs might fly
Pigs might fly one day but this one didn't. When a pig boarded a flight at Connecticut, he wasn't allowed to fly because he became noisy and disruptive. The pig and his owner were asked to disembark.
✈️ Read a book with a pig in the story OR set in Connecticut OR where a character is noisy and disruptive.
15. Flames on the wing
Passengers on a flight from Barcelona to Russia got quite a shock when they saw flames coming from the wing of their Boeing 767. The plane made a speedy turnaround back to Spain and landed safely.
✈️ Read a book with a flame on the cover OR where a character flies on a plane OR set in Spain.
16. Spy plane
A strange device was found in the bathroom of an American Airlines plane. People initially thought it to be a part of an explosive device, so the plane made an emergency landing. It turned out to be a camera that someone was using to spy on people using the bathroom.
✈️ Read a book where a hidden camera is found OR where a character is being watched without their knowledge OR with a scene in a bathroom.
17. Lost luggage
It is of course annoying when an airline loses your luggage. But what if that luggage happened to be 172 gold bars weighing more than 3000kg? The hatch of a plane in Russia flew open during takeoff and scattered its load all over the runway. The gold bars, diamonds and gems were worth around $362 million (£275m).
✈️ Read a book where luggage is lost OR with gold bars, diamonds or gems in the story OR where something is scattered. Tell us what.
18. Passing away
Sadly, it is inevitable that people might pass away while in the air. Some larger planes can accommodate for this rare occurrence, but if that's not possible, you might find yourself sitting next to a dead body. When an elderly man passed away on a BA flight to America in 2006, the body was placed in first class on one of the reclining seats.
✈️ Read a book where a character passes away quietly OR where a person has a seat in first class OR set in 2006.
19. Getting aggressive with prosthetics
One woman on a flight from Tunisia to Edinburgh found herself handcuffed to her seat by the end of the journey. The reason? The drunk woman had removed her prosthetic leg and started swinging it aggressively at the cabin crew.
✈️ Read a book where a character gets handcuffed OR where a character has a prosthetic OR where a woman gets drunk and aggressive.
20. A man falsely triggered the emergency door
We are sorry to announce that activating the emergency slide will not help you get off a plane any quicker. In fact, as a man on a China Airways flight discovered in 2014, it’s likely to delay you even further. He caused around £10,000 ($13,100) worth of damage and passengers were stuck for two hours.
✈️ Read a book where a character uses a slide OR where a character is stuck somewhere OR where a character causes some damage. Tell us what kind of damage.

Some larger planes can accommodate for this rare occurrence, but if that's not possible, you might find yourself sitting next to a dead body. Tasks:
War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy 14/03/19 "She let the hawk fly upward from her wide right sleeve" Page 90
I Will Never Leave You by S.M. Thayer 27/03/19 - Laurel is rushed back to hospital after losing a lot of blood after childbirth
✈️ Read a book where a character gives birth in a strange place OR with a British character OR where the letters SKY can be found in the title (in any order).
A Twist in Time by Julie McElwain 01/03/19
Reckless by Cornelia Funke 05/03/19 - The goyls are named after gems

What the heck?? Airplanes!
Duration: March 1, 2019-February 29, 2020
Tasks:
Although airlines usually restrict the number of birds in the aircraft to just six, you could find yourself sat next to one and in the case of one unusual flight to Jeddah – as many as twenty falcons.
✈️ Read a book with on the cover or mentioned in the story (Give us a sentence and page/loc#) OR a Series #6 or #20.
✈️ Read a book where a character gives birth in a strange place OR with a British character OR where the letters SKY can be found in the title (in any order).
