Nicolle Hey Sebastien, hope you enjoy your membership of this group. Feel free to make your 'personal classics' page and join in with our group reads including Dracula which you are currently reading.

message 203: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 1 comments I studied science in college and never really got around to reading many of the classics. Now my husband has a Ph.D. in literature and I feel behind! So I am excited to do some catching up. Thanks for staring this group!

message 204: by Robert (new)

Robert (booklover_83) Hi All! I started reading again after a long absence and did start with some classics on my Kindle Application. I am currently reading Anne Rice but next month's selection is on my "To Read" list as I have not read that particular book since early in my high school career. I am looking forward to discussing it in the next month.

message 206: by Ellie (new)

Ellie | 2 comments Hi, I'm Ellie and I'm from the UK.

I haven't been reading classics for very long, but I'm really into them now. I really like Austens work, especially "Emma", but my favourite classic would be "The Odyssey" by Homer.

message 207: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Welcome all new members!
Desiree, when you say 'count me in' I laughed as you are talking about Dracula who is The Count - I have a simple sense of humor.
Ellie, is The Odyssey hard to read as it was written quite a while ago??!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) | 614 comments Mod
Welcome, Ellie!

message 209: by Jane (new)

Jane (flopsybunny) Hi, I'm Jane from Edinburgh, Scotland. I have read a few of the Classics my favourites being Les Miserables and Pride and Prejudice but on the whole I have always found them a bit intimidating. I look forward to hearing recommendations.

Nicolle Hello Jane hope we can help you out. Feel free to join our group reads.

Ellie | 2 comments Nicolle wrote: "

No, its acctually really easy, some of the description can be a bit long, but if you can get over that its a really interesting read. Also because it would have originally been told in pubs by bards , the main story broken up into small storys making it so much easier to read.

message 212: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I will give that a try soon then.

I've been an avid reader my entire life, and this year I am taking an AP English class--which, hopefully, will broaden my opportunities to read!

Currently reading Grapes of Wrath for school. :)

message 231: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all!
To introduce myself, I am Sarah and I'm 26 years old living in London. I've been an avid reader all my life, but I'm starting to widen the genre of books that I read to include more hard core fantasy, satires, and now classics. I think I will start with the September reads for this group and try to kill a mockingird and the hobbit! Will keep you posted on how I get on :-)

message 233: by kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (last edited Aug 25, 2011 03:07AM) (new)

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Sarah, welcome to the group and I'm glad you read most of the books and exploring more by genres, not a picky reader ha. I also tried some local satire books and never enjoyed them much, well, I think I have to try foreign satire. Any suggestion? I'm hoping that you don't mean to kill a mockingbird. Haha. I have to read that part again and again and it made my day!

message 234: by kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (last edited Aug 25, 2011 03:05AM) (new)

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Breanna, I just finished reading Jane Eyre last weekend and I really like it. I can' wait to read your comments and review of that book. Enjoy reading!

Hi Alan, welcome to the group and wishing you more books to come! Feel free to suggest any titles, I read few literary novels so far and only my local friends suggested them and I want to hear your suggestions anytime. Have fun!

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Kellie, welcome to the group! I don't have any idea where stoke-on-trent is. You can now kill me because I'm an idiot. Haha. Hiding.

message 236: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle I know where Stoke-on-Trent is!! I think I might have even been there...

Hope you guys settle in comfortabl and take advantage of the group.

message 237: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Kwesi

Thanks for the message! I've almost finished reading a book called Death and a Penguin, which is a Ukrainian satire but I've not made my mind up about it yet. It was easy to read and relatively short so wasn't too much hard work. There are a couple of follow ups which I may read before fully making up my mind. If you get chance to read (can read from start to finish in a couple of hours) let me know what you think :-)

message 238: by Sameh (new)

Sameh El-Tantawy (el-tantawy) | 2 comments Hi everyone,

I'm Sameh from Alexandria, EGYPT. I'm thirty years old and I interested in English literature and classic. I proud to join for this group.

message 239: by Alex (new)

Alex | 3 comments Hi. I'm Alex from London. I have a background in Classics but unfortunately that will only help if/when you read The Iliad and/or The Odyssey. I have read To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit but a long time ago, so I will enjoy going over those again. For now I am heading to the library to start on Dracula, a book I have always wanted to read but never got around to doing so. Thank you for the inspiration!

message 240: by Mirka (new)

Mirka | 2 comments Hey, I am Mirka from the island of Malta. I don't read classics often but I like them. Hopefully I'll start reading them with the rest of this group. I wouldn't live without books! My favourite classic is The Count of Monte Cristo.

message 241: by Breanna (new)

Breanna McDowell (bre_mcdowell89) | 12 comments Hi, Kwesi. I'll be sure to let you know what I think about it when I finish. :)

message 242: by kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (last edited Aug 25, 2011 09:06AM) (new)

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments @Sarah: Sure, I let you know and I might check that book out. I'm kind of slow in hunting books but I'll make sure to read that book soon. I never tried any Ukranian literature yet.

@Breanna: Okay! :)

kwesi ÕÂӢʨ (kwesifriends) | 138 comments Hi Sameh, welcome to the group and I'm surpirse that you are from Egypt. I never met someone in Egypt before, interesting.

Hi Alex, I read (not really) and discuss The Iliad and The Odyssey when I was in high school and never enjoyed it. Maybe because I have the worst teacher that time and we don't have enough school supply (book) to be read individually. After you read Dracula, try to look for a copy of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Good luck!

Hi Mirka, welcome to the group! I love Alexandre Dumas' works but I only read 2 so far, The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

message 244: by Nicolle (new)

Nicolle Hi Alex, I do hope we will read some of the really old classics such as The Iliad and The Odyssey soon, so it should help the group that you are aquainted with them. Enjoy Dracula!

Nice to meet you Mirka, we should get you reading classics more often.

Dana L.L. (danicusbanicus) Hello all! My name is Dana and I am from Trenton, MI. I am so excited to be apart of a book club. I've never done anything like this before. :) I'm a huge fan of James Joyce, so my favorite classic is probably A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I look forward to reading with all of you!!!! :) Hoorayyyy

Welcome, Dana!

message 249: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Dana...Hope that you join in as we read To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit

message 250: by Jimmy (last edited Aug 25, 2011 11:21AM) (new)

Jimmy A warm welcome to you Dana. Interested to see that your favorite is Potrait of the Artist as a Young Man... Not anyone's cup of tea - reading through the 'Not So Great Expectations' discussions thread this comes out as one of the least liked books. I find Joyce facinating, but not necessarily enjoyable. Ulysses is an outstanding piece of work, but I would not recommend it to anyone. Dubliners, on the other hand, I would recommend, if only for 'The Dead'.
